I'm rewatching the Chief vs Arby's fight and it looks great for an Unreal 5 cutscene. I don't know, have I just set my standards too high for this stuff? I look at it and think "this is excessively expensive despite simultaneously looking cheap and overdone" with the same lack of style that kills so many modern day action scenes for me. Every camera real and fake needs to swing around and shake and bob for added intensity (and to hide imperfections in the vfx).

Halo finally looks like Halo”, but immediately “oh poo poo, Halo now looks like Halo”. It really did feel like watching a cut scene from a AAA game. Season 3, should it happen, is going to be a lot of outside shots of Canadian forests with power ranger costumes and inside shots done completely infront of the Volume because “sci-fi subterranean vistas”. If we’re lucky, well get a tense, tightly shot Dead Space/Resident Evil b-plot.

I don't think you're being overly harsh, the show's action scenes have mostly left me cold for the same reasons.

I don't know why they think Master Chief has to be doing john wick kung fu, I always got the vibe he was more of a soldier than a superhero. Like he shoots dudes with a gun. Maybe that's not Visually Dynamic enough for television, I don't know

So they went with superhero instead. As for "shoots dudes with gun" you certainly can make a walking aimbot with pinpoint accuracy seem cool, but you also want your heroes to struggle and earn their wins, right? The 40K fan film "Astartes" is great at making space marine super soldiers look goddamn terrifying but if Chief and the Spartans in the show did the same thing I'm sure someone would call them out as being boring and overpowered.

I can usually suspend my disbelief for dumb plot poo poo, but having the entire base overrun with the flood before Miranda Keyes could conclude that the spores on her petri dish might be dangerous completely broke me. That's a malicious level of incompetence given by the writers to that character. Visuals are great though, definitely looks like Halo.

That's fascinating, I thought the way it slowly broke "the rules" was genuinely really scary. The outbreak just happens off screen. Of course your point is that Miranda is being stupid slow, and she is, though the speed of the outbreak is still very impressive and effectively scary. It doesn't feel like she takes all that long -- though as you argue, too long. I think the complete out of context nature of the threat is incredibly well handled, similarly to how the game handles it. I finished it the other day and there are a bunch of niggles but the way it handles the game play shift after the Flood turns up owns.

How much time elapsed on Onyx? It seemed like a few hours. Seems like that's not unreasonable for a scientist to be checking their findings instead of immediately sounding an alarm. I mean in that universe they've found tons of alien life and it's more or less the same as Earth's.

I never played the games so I was really curious about this show. It's hilariously bad but we still enjoyed making fun of it. It really is too bad they spent so much time zooming in on John's face so he can have emotions because the scenes where things blow up were pretty entertaining. It's also pretty funny how Not-Avasarala's entire role seems to be to bark snarky orders and then look dismayed when everyone defies her. And I liked the first Cortana design way better than the second one. Season 1 Cortana is a bizarre mix of Jen Taylor's face with CGI over top. Season 2 Cortana is just an actress with a blue filter over her. I always liked Halo 2 Cortana being kinda purple.

I'm playing through the games now and they're hardly unimpeachable narrative art -- there's a plot beat in the first one that would make people's heads spin if it happened on TV -- but they were a cornerstone for a lot of people's childhood and so you get a lot of the typical reactionary stances against adaptation changes as a result.
