The Pistol Shrimp has a specially shaped claw that it uses to shoot poo poo with water bullets.

When it slams its claw shut (at about 97kph, or 60mph), it creates a low pressure cavitation bubble that travels forward a bit before collapsing. That bubble creates a 218dB explosion and reaches temperatures of about 4800°C; for comparison, firearms reach about 170dB, lava is around 2400°C, and the loving surface of the sun is 5500°C.

They also live with Gobies; the shrimp creates burrows for themselves and the fish, and the fish keeps an eye out for predators to compensate for the shrimp's poor eyesight. They're also, as far as I know, the only eusocial species that occur in the sea, in that they divide labor and raise young in a way similar to honeybees and mole rats.

I love those little bastards, they're freaking awesome

Fuckin' orcas, man. See them around reasonably often in the fjords where I grew up. Three or four tons of sleek muscle and teeth, impeccably dressed in black and white, and they have enough brains to realize they're cool as gently caress. They eat whatever they want to eat and they will have fun doing it.

Don't some pods of orcas get so picky about food that they starve surrounded by food sources that they just don't know they can eat? I swear a goon said that once.

Never heard about that before but I wouldn't be surprised if they're smart enough to also be susceptible to e.g. suicidal depression, like humans.

I was a kid who watched way too much Discovery channel growing up, so I don’t have just one favourite sea critter. Here’s some cool ones that haven’t been mentioned yet though.

Irukandji jellyfish are teeny tiny and basically invisible in the water, but they can have very long tentacles. It’s easy for a swimmer to get stung by them without even knowing they’re there. The pain from their stings is so strong that they are known for causing their victims to want to commit suicide or ask to be killed to be put out of their misery.

Greenland sharks are potentially the oldest living vertebrates on the planet. We estimate that they can live as long as 500 years. We know very little about them because they prefer the depths of the sea floor in cold waters. They are also blind due to parasites that eat their eyes. They’ve supposedly been spotted in the St. Lawrence river.

The frilled shark is an elusive shark that looks like a sea serpent from an old sailing map.

Banded sea kraits are sea snakes that have one of the most venomous bites in the world.

One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the unicorn tang!

The Coelacanth isn’t too interesting visually or biologically, but it has a great backstory.

It was thought to have been a prehistoric fish that went extinct in the late Cretaceous period, but in 1938 people started catching them off the coast of Africa.

It’s critically endangered now, but that beats the hell out of being extinct. :unsmith:

Harbor seal

Was free-diving/snorkeling with my brother in Monterey Bay. One came out of the kelp beds we were circling around and just hung out with us for a good ten minutes. Literally swimming next to us foot away, circling us, looking us in the face, etc. It wasn't hostile or afraid, just checking us out.

Sea turtles are a close second. They can be way faster than you'd expect.

I thought these had to have a certain water pressure to live? I swear I read that the infamous picture of them eating Doritos was impossible because they just can't survive at higher water...uh...altitude.

Glad to be wrong and I would pet the giant rollypolly.

that entire aquarium is a pressure vessel and all guests must be brought up to pressure and acclimated in a hyperbaric chamber prior to entry.

Went surfing in Mendocino last weekend and a seal was hanging with me for about an hour and a half, about 20 feet away, riding the waves with me and just chilling. Seals are awesome!
