Many of us had the pain (of looking at) & pleasure (of making others look at) some Real fuckin Reality even more uncensored than Worlds Worst Crashes type of protoshock you'd find at the VHS rental shoppe in the 90s.

Can't talk pictures of dead people without mentioning the true OG of shock image sites, rotten.com. Now hosted under the domain of gwern.net, I can't even get it to load the main site anymore, but the memories of those early and extremely graphic crime-scenes from around the world and the nightmarish medical oddities/pathologies, along with some strange, mostly vintage, porn thrown in for variety, are burnt into the braincells of many of us. I'll personally never forget my first shock image exposure, the photo set of Chris Farley after his body was found on his apartment floor. I grew up a lot in that moment, after shedding a tear for an all time favorite comedian of mine, now seeing him reduced to a purple blob in a ripped open shirt, foam still around his mouth and eyes swollen shut. That broke my heart but afterwards I was steeled, and nothing really hit as hard again until 1 Man 1 Jar came out.

But just as Penthouse had 'thought provoking' letters too besides just the porno inside, rotten's little known and less famous Rotten Library section contained articles on a wide variety of well written subjects under topics like Religion, Sex (of course), Crime (of course), Culture, Travel, etc. Im pretty sure these collections of articles pre-date wikipedia itself, so it was one of the first places for weird information that was also educational beyond pulverized anatomy and spilt brains. They're all still up it seems, and I like to reread them from time to time. https://www.gwern.net/docs/rotten.com/library/index.html

After rotten's caretakers jumped ship and stopped updating permanently, the new hotness was Ogrish. A spiritual successor, it was more forums-based and gave room for homegrown terribleness to be shared. With a whole community forming around gore and shock media, Ogrish even put out their own branded magazines with full page color gore and interesting articles about How to Properly Dispose of Bodies, serial killer profiles, some historical topics, etc. It was a decent product for its audience, but only produced 3 issues before maybe legal issues got in the way. They too have shut down in the past few years.

LiveLeak came on the scene when video streaming/sharing began to really get big. It began its life as also a shock and gore website, but eventually revolved mostly around footage from the wars in the Middle East and other politically leaning videos. It got bigger when the government leaks were happening, and is still around today, but in a geopolitical way rather than traditional shock and gore only.

These are just the big three that come to mind, I am sure you all can name plenty others across internet no-mans-lands. What was your first exposure to the horrors of the internet? Anything that will stay with you forever? Did you ruin anyone's day by being an rear end on purpose and hiding gore for classmates to come upon? Do you think shock/gore images have any value? Wanna talk about the BME olympics?

Where my edgelords at? :emo:

I remember when the Nikki Katsouras (sp?) crash scene pictures were leaked to the internet. They blew up quickly because of how graphic they were (a drunk teenage girl had an argument with her rich parents and stole their Jaguar, eventually hitting a toll station head on and obliterated her head except for her tongue still in tact in the middle). The internet (mostly channers) decided to be especially cruel and kept sending the photos to all the family by any means necessary, to the point they all had to basically quit the internet and never have a public email address since. It became a bannable offense to repost the pics or even mention her name in certain places from what a poo poo show it was.

Rotten Library was just great, I read just about all of it when I was 13 or so and I learned about so much morbid fascinating stuff.

Black Gold!

The only reason I imbibed all of Rotten, Ogrish, and LiveLeak is because I saw all of the Faces of Death videos as a kid and wanted a continuance of the macabre.

Luckily, I no longer have a morbid curiosity in that sense.

some guy got shot in the head right outside my office window and was dead as hell. didn’t know what else to do but take a pic. not sure what i planned to do with it.

i do work with a county medical examiner and sometimes have to check in and see if the system is working and seeing dead people doesnt even register for me anymore.

Gore typically has a numbing effect after gazing upon it enough, so I feel it might have real world value in preparing yourself for what horrors you might see in the future and prevent you from freezing up or going into shock at the sight of blood and bone. The same principle as for medical students going into surgery eventually and needing to negate having to process the visceralness in real time and stay focused.

Not as extreme as the other sites but World Star Hip Hop started out as a site where people could post their music videos, then it became a site where people posted videos of other people doing horrible, violent poo poo, and now it's back to being a music video site again.

I hate gore. Definitely the worst thing I've seen is the kim sun-il decapitation. Even though I only saw very brief bits of it while someone else was watching it. To give you an idea of how bad it is, I've seen someone get shot and killed in person in real life and it was nowhere near as traumatizing as that seeing that video.

seen this too, at least the low res version of it on youtube. it's not so bad since at least it's potato quality and not a close up. You can't see the people getting chopped up - they're kind of just there one second and then the helicopter comes down and they're not there anymore. You can definitely tell they were in the path of the blades though :smith:

Tipper is the worst. She can shove the entirety of the PMRC up her rear end sideways.

While I love horror movies, real gore creeps me out. I've tried to watch as little as possible, but my brother used to send out emails to me and friends that would have a few links to whatever we were into at the time and almost invariably he'd disguise some gore link as a concert announcement, video game deal, or whatever and if you just clicked well...The one that stuck with me was the Dnepropetrovsk maniacs where they jump some guy who is out tooling around on a Ural or Dnepr motorcycle. I think they killed other people as well before being caught.

It wasn't as common before those sites like rotten.com, but I remember running across some back in the wild west days of the internet like 93-96 or so. It was usually mixed in with porn and at that point the internet hadn't quite desensitized me yet and it seemed so taboo.

I once saw a picture of a man whose car got blowed up in Iraq and he sat in the driver's seat, and the right hemisphere of his brain sat in the passenger seat, and it's one of those things where you just kind of wonder how that even happened. I don't even recall it as very gory, unlike those beheading videos freaks watched on school computers.

this kind of poo poo is everywhere now, which is kind of weird. there are subreddits dedicated to videos of people being killed in incredibly graphic ways in HD.

like most people, as a young teen in the early days of the internet I found some of the early gore and beheading videos interesting in a kind of "holy poo poo" way, but I was never properly into it like some people were, and these days I'd rather not even see any kind of dead bodies let alone gore tbh.

i remember seeing a lot of horrible stuff as a teenager back in those good ol' days of the internet. bunch of mutilated dicks, people's torn up faces and bodies after bad car accidents, nasty burns or infections, etc. and none if it really phased me. but what took the wind out of my sails were videos of stuff happening live. the specific thing i remember seeing that ended my curiosity about shock content was a video of a guy beating a dog with a shovel. not really sure why that was my tipping point.

One that sticks out for me was one of a naked woman holding a man's head I think? If I remember the story they were methhead bikers and she and her lover killed her boyfriend and took pictures then got caught because they sent them in to get developed? I'm not even sure this is real anymore. I just remember being really shocked at the picture.

It was a long time ago and I don't know how I came across it. I don't seek out that stuff generally speaking. Sometimes I want to see crime scene photos when I'm reading true crime stuff though.

There's definitely the morbid fascination of seeing a body devoid of personhood, but I always kinda disconnect and space out when I see them in photos. I used to love Rotten library when I was 13. It's how I learned about Scientology.

My uncle gave me a book called Underground Education by Richard Zacks once. Fascinating stuff, though I couldn't stand the middle-aged woman from the 1800s photographed putting a carrot in her vagina, as well as the guy bending over to expose that he had two penises. I think I taped paper over those photos.
