FFX is incredibly dumb, but god drat if it's not so colorful and stylistically distinctive that I really like just looking at it sometimes. I couldn't stick with it - nor any other Final Fantasy game - but the opening stuff before they set you loose was just actually fun and interesting.

Kind of funny how fast Yuna gets her thirst on for Tidus. One wonders how shallow the dating pool is on Besaid...

Let's see... Wakka... the other Aurochs who barely merit names... Wakka's dead brother...

Tidus also has to be interestingly dumb to her. He's almost a holy idiot, spouting off about visions of something significant to her own religious beliefs, but without any knowledge or context about what those "visions" should mean to a normal person. And he's not immediately offering her the deference that seems to be due a summoner, one less hurdle to getting a relationship (or fling) going. If you don't mind a dingus with roughly Lulu levels of fashion sense, hey, why not.

Blitzball is kinda dumb but I like this just uncommented-upon thing where humans in Spira just seem to have profoundly greater lung capacity or maybe even secret gills or something? They're humans, sure, but they're fantasy humans on a fantasy world which is a lot more oceanic than Earth. It's a neat little difference!

Also the floating water orb looks silly, but then again it's a sport that would've started in the water and they have wacky magitech. So why the hell not!

Game. Game, please. We really didn't need this "hey, so sexy!" re-introduction of Rikku from a couple episodes ago followed so soon by her having a literal child's fear reaction to lightning including crawling around and clinging to an adult's leg. Please, please, infantilization is not actually hot.

JRPGs absolutely love coming up with diegetic excuses for their save points. Some are cute and make a reasonable amount of sense ("oh, this here's a good camping spot") while others are... bugfuck insane, really. It's admittedly not just JRPGs, but that's where I've seen this weird tendency the most often.

It's honestly shocking how often the giant flying hell whale manages to sneak up on us. It's honestly kinda shameful.

Auron probably noticed but thought it would be funnier not to tell us. To be fair, he was right.

Sin just chilling and genuinely being soothed by the song of the fayth is actually a really neat detail, though. It's a pretty small bit of characterization but it still adds something humanizing to the previously mindless apocalypse-monster that none of the flashbacks and anecdotes about pre-Sin Jecht had really done for me.

Two things:

1. Cid is rad.

2. Wakka, just... just shut the gently caress up. Never open your mouth again, except maybe, maybe for food and water, and I'm not even sure you should be permitted that much.

On the other hand, details they did really well include the consistency of everyone's reactions based on who knows what. If you ever do replay with that "beating sin kills the summoner" spoiler in mind, a lot things make perfect sense.

It recontextualizes so much about how the party acts. Lulu's brusque and kind of a jerk, but she's also dealing with the same general loss everyone is, the personal loss of Chappu, and bracing herself for Yuna. Wakka's trying to apply a, "Laugh so you don't cry" attitude to everything, even the loss of Home just now, even when he completely sticks his foot in his mouth doing so. (He should still shut up forever now.) Kimahri is very... Kimahri, because even victory is going to be unspeakably sad for everyone involved, no wonder he doesn't want Gooba& along for the ride at first.

Thinking about it actually makes me dislike Seymour even more now, because here he is with his own fantastically powerful Aeon and he was doing... what, exactly, with it? Making a dramatic show of killing some fiends every once in a while but otherwise just using it to entrench himself more in worldly power. Using the idea of a show marriage to raise his own stock with the people, because that's what it'd really be about - not raising everyone's spirits, but making him more sympathetic with this starcrossed lovers poo poo after Yuna is conveniently dead.

God drat, that was miserable. No, not Dan's performance, just the cloister itself. Even if it wasn't a pain in the rear end, I despise anything that makes you sit on a rail cart between checkpoints like that. It's a perfect microcosm of the cloisters themselves.

Also, there must be a non-zero number of Summoners who go on their pilgrimages and come out broken by the sheer hypocrisy on display of this "holy site" being a giant display of forbidden machina. Or is Bevelle's cloister not supposed to be on the pilgrimage? Some of the details are escaping me.

That's how organized religion works. The people at the top dictate the interpretation of doctrine and can justify just about anything using the right troll logic.

A big tenant of Christianity is not killing people and respecting the sanctity of life, and yet Pope Urban had no trouble ordering the First Crusade (which had popular support among people).

It was either Lulu or Wakka that mentioned it earlier in the game, "Bevelle decides what machina we can and cannot use." It’s trivial for them to say "These weapons are okay to use because we need to defend the Holy City of Bevelle and the meisters."

You use the hierarchy to filter for people who will accept (or can be conditioned to accept) the hypocrisy, yes, but Summoners don't seem to automatically be part of the hierarchy. Like, Yuna's respected but doesn't seem to have formal authority. Seems like a recipe for trouble when you let a popular, self-sacrificing true believer in on the secret without the full filtering system of the church hierarchy.

I do recall how Seymour knows how to become Sin, kinda sucks that his plan is just genocidal nihilism again but I guess that's just final fantasy for ya.

A thought: what kind of literal physical needs do unsent have, and what can destroy them other than sending? Like we've seen now that Mika and Seymour are pyrefly ghosts, do they need to eat, drink, or rest? Be held together by some other force? Or is a pyrefly ghost self-sustaining? Also, can an unsent be deliberately fashioned from the recently dead rather than solely coming together on its own?

hosed up as it may be, there's a certain twisted logic to the idea of creating a world populated by the unsent rather than the living, especially if they have a way to manufacture unsent. If the unsent can just reincorporate themselves after Sin passes by, then his visitations become a big inconvenience instead of the full-on disaster it is to those who still exist in the world. It'd be a nightmare world and an unspeakably monstrous act to actually create it, but the most efficient way would be to embody Sin as Seymour has said he intends on doing.

And here's the big twist, which I really like. It's neat! It uses elements that have been established about the world so far, extrapolates them out into something bigger, and also turns some assumptions and expectations about the world on their head. It also cuts out the suggestions of time travel going on, thank gently caress.
