two houses on my street that would have been sold in a day are still for sale a week later. even in the “cheaper” market of west Michigan poo poo is cooling.

I know one of the families and they bought a house in a pricier part of the area but I know their incomes don’t match it. it’s more about how they bought their house 10 years ago at 120 and now on market for 315.

can any Canadians advise on how the hell people can afford homes there? it’s tough here in the states but I’m sure wages aren’t that much higher up there for homes 2x the value.

is it like in hot us markets where you either bought a house 20 years ago and your equity can buy a house or parent loans?

there’s a pretty large amount of not fish international trade that physically flows through Seattle and Tacoma. there is also a surprising amount of small and mid sized manufacturing occurring in non descript warehouses in the area that isn’t visible unless one interacts with it directly. it’s closest to Asia because of how great circles work and gets a lot of trade because of that.

I left Portland right when T6 was about to shut down in Port of Portland. so I assume now all that willamette valley agriculture is now moving via SeaTac?

those homes are all over Palm Springs area. my grandparents moved there in the 90s and lived in a gated 55+ community and their house was like that. seemed ok for what they wanted. Zillow has it at 126k. what a bargain.

well my office is closing and my bosses want to keep me so I got to move across state to a higher CoL so can’t wait to have a higher mortgage and worse interest rate since I refinanced at the dip and changed it to a 15yr loan.

also there are no houses that are like 1500 sqft where we need to be so that’s great. everyone at the office I’m moving to all have like 45-1hr commutes due to sprawl. I’d try to stay here but city I’m living in is not great for my career and the pay is a lot lower.

I’m pretty sure I have 2 full bathrooms in my 1920s house because it started as 2 units. I have tried to see if it was a sears house but I found very similar designs that were marketed as double bungalows where you live with a renter to pay off our house.

also my kid’s room upstairs used to be a tiny kitchen.

I got pre approved for 530k based off my sub 100k salary and what sale proceeds I get for my house. if we had to move tomorrow for my job and my spouse still can’t find a new job we’d be eating less than raman from the 3100k mortgage payments if we went the max. unfortunately houses where we got to be are 400k and up. we may not move until next year, depending on job market. anywhere cheaper and my commute and quality of life would be not great.

I really feel for people who can’t even get to the house part or other things. like if we didn’t buy in 2017 in our underpriced Midwest market then we’d be screwed trying to buy anything in a larger metro.

in the area we may be moving to(west Detroit Metro) I’m seeing homes not going anywhere over list by a lot in the 4-550k range which is good. however I wonder how many people did lock in low rates 2 years ago because going from 2-7% is not great but poo poo we have to do…

I don’t mind being in a barely updated 70s-80s home. spent 6 in a 1920s home; however it has way more character.

if we moved back to the triangle area of NC we’d probably be looking at lot more which probably couldn’t work with our incomes.
