Posted this in the suno thread but it doesn't get as much traffic

I wrote the lyrics for and tried to generate a late era Beatles song, just to see how close it could get.
"Walkabout"
https://voca.ro/1lJkDwdeRXFd

Also a WIP of a 70s prog/glam rock song, I haven't heard many other attempts at this sort of thing yet
https://voca.ro/1fjH7q90UzIW

Both made using Udio. It's clearly the better model over Suno, but the tooling needs some work. Doesn't need much, it only needs the ability to extend from arbitrary points in a song and the ability to generate more (or less) than ~30 second chunks to hit and exceed parity.

The answer is "Yes, very much so"

A typical sermon:

It's actually really easy to summon this stuff, follow the Udio links and you can see the prompts I used, BUT: with Udio it's critical that, if you are trying to get it to do weird poo poo, you have to flip the 'Manual Mode' switch right to the lower left of the 'create' button. It seems to reset often so you have to keep re-flipping it. If you don't use manual mode then you are going to get a 'crushed' in creativity version of whatever you are asking for where it will add music. This is also the same thing you must do if you are trying to get a live music style. If you leave Udio alone it will refine out the live sound. Always be manual mode.

You can share playlists and you don't need an account to play them, so here is a bunch of 'real' music without any jokes or anything that I've summoned with Udio. It's reusing lyrics I've already used in Suno before, to see how it handles it.

https://www.udio.com/playlists/aj93rRFV4cuUXkQ7fZkPLy

The quality is so good with Udio that, even though Suno is better to use. It's really difficult to be OK with Suno's quality after experiencing Udio. Something else Udio has issues with is keeping a chorus going. It will sing it once, then sing a totally different style one next go around. Also has issues pronouncing common stuff like "amen" so I had to start going 'ayemen' but then it kinda sounds weird. Oh well!

hmm, I actually haven't had much of an issue with that

my strategy was to always use manual mode, use about the same amount of words per generation chunk, and mark out the lyrics with [verse], [chorus], or [bridge] above them

I did it for this song, a wonderful new wave song about pooping, and the choruses are spot on
https://voca.ro/1g5aT2Q3KZDl

made it in response to an argument about poop that devolved into one goon saying "these poops are tearing us apart"

I created the lyrics by giving chatgpt the lyrics to love will tear us apart and asking it to make them about pooping

I'm honestly surprised that it agreed to do it, and that it correctly guessed I would want the chorus to be "poo, poo will tear us apart again"

I gave Udio a try, and threw in the first subject I thought of ("a predator hunting prey in a snowy wilderness") with the descriptors "fast aggressive goth rock, female vocalist". I wasn't expecting much, but drat, it massively exceeded my expectations. :stare: There were a couple of little glitches, but it's scary how well the system worked overall.

I noticed this. I got around it by generating the song along separate threads, eg

verse 1 > chorus 1 > lead break
verse 1 > chorus 1 > chorus 2 > lead break
verse 1 > verse 2
verse 1 > verse 3

Then combine them in post. No hard and fast rules, though I try not to drag one thread on for too long because of the quality loss.

One of the first things I made in Udio was on the same theme as this, but polar opposite in style and voice:

https://www.udio.com/songs/2aJssVwzP8QmFpFvMirDXX

I'm not quite prepared to wash my hands of Suno entirely yet, I still have a couple of projects I'm working on in it (one of which will almost certainly need editing externally unless they introduce more tools to combine tracks at specified points) but Udio definitely has some QoL features that are very impressive. Being able to tell it to make specifically an intro or outro segment is a game-changer, but personally I wish it would make the first generations of a prompt double length (1:06 instead of 0:33) and then allow you to add the shorter sections on to that.

And a few images just as a treat:

Continuing to play with Udio - I really want to be able to generate longer scripts. 30s at a time is tedious for spoken word / podcast type outputs, but man, the results are promising.
