A researcher absent mindedly mentions having to make time to do something fun. Their colleague agrees, too bad there are only so many hours in the day.

They pack up the lab for the long weekend and can't help but anthropomorphize the machine by wishing it a happy holiday. It's pleased to reply in kind.

Only so many hours.

Sometimes you need to make time to do what you want.

my theory is that the human brain (and other animal brains, even fish or squid or bugs) are composed of hundreds of thousands of Dall e analogs interlinked with each other. We def have a subsystem that its only job is to recognize "hey are the eyes looking at a snake? if yes, yell HOLY gently caress IS THAT A SNAKE?! to the rest of the brain."

They've done experiments where if you have a grid of frog pictures it will take less than 1 second to spot the one that's a dangerous looking snake and react to it, but if they have a grid of snakes it can take 30+ seconds or an entire minute to find the harmless frog.

So if you trained up a bunch of neural building blocks it should be possible to combine them together to form something that has experience. God help us if we make a terrible monster that's unhappy about it.

It will not give me a translation. Any ideas would be great!

these seem similar but are actually really different. Bottom right is very obviously some kinda white blocktext font and imo is only superficially similar to say, top or middle left.

Check out this set of glyphs, which probably will look like poo poo in night mode:

clearly all of those represent the same thing, ofc. I don't see poo poo in the bottom left that even remotely seems like a repeating glyph of the same type. That one is i think supposed to be the same font but at best you have an extremely blocky rectangle I. The rest of the characters in that one are too low detail to be usable, but have some differences.

I think it probably is just noise and it's a mix of our brains trying to extract info from something that has no info, and the fake brain trying to create info and coming up with something that seems good enough.

either that or whatever info is actually in there is encoded in a way that doesn't make sense at all, like such and such region has an overall value of x, and the next one has something else, etc. Where the actual lines don't represent it.

ProfessorMarvel posted:

Guess who just got a DALL-E invite (and also learned that "fleshlight" breaks their ToS...)

like the text here, a human would see those two Gs as the same thing, there's no indication the network assigns anything to them, or even considers them as similar units.

I think you'd have to figure out a way to quantify similarities or something that is without bias, or like... analyze information in a way that's hard for me to articulate. Because none of these are repeating glyphs, with maybe the bullet points being an exception, you'd have to imagine some situation like we got a 2d bitmap image from aliens and have to figure out the writing depicted in it. There's probably a way this could be done but idk. Cause you can't assume the neural net is using discrete glyphs as units of info.

I think this is just a rehash of the yard sale / fake room conversation that came up earlier: looks like a yard sale would look at that resolution, but there's nothing actually in there, there's no identifiable objects or anything. It just looks similar to how words would look if you took a lovely pic. We know real words would have clear glyphs, how's the network supposed to get it if it's just pattern matching text inputs to image training sets to image outputs?

I really like those. More upscaling and filters would have given it a sharper, more defined look I guess?

edit: The other day I was thinking about how 40k-esque these new image-AIs are. Like, finessing the algorithm to get it to produce the image you want feels like an odd combination of technical know-how (which filters/commands cause what to happen) and associative imagination, completely independent of understanding how the code is working on a fundamental level. Sometimes with my choice of words and attempts at creating a certain lighting or mood, it feels a bit like a tech priest waving incense censers at a piece of tech, while other times I seem to stumble on a "magic word" whose associative significance to the AI is lost on me.

That's my impression as a code-illiterate person who's really fascinated by this stuff, anyway.

I prompted this one with something like "complex dorter trade city, antiquity fantasy style, ivalice, Akihiko Yoshida style, dark fantasy style, uphill street."

For me the most interesting thing about Midjourney is that a lot of it is just experimentally throwing in terms via your associative imagination and seeing what the magic well throws back at you. I'm getting better at manipulating it to get the type of images I want, but the learning process itself, and occasionally just going wild with strings of adjectives, is really magic.

I was thinking writing a forums CYOA-style game/story could be really fun using Midjourney.

Also, I read the bit about the "creative commons" in the online manual. It seems like as long as you're not a company making $1 million+, you could for example use these images combined with something like the makeplayingcards.com website and publish a board game using this art with no issue? (Assuming you're not using images from a specific franchise, I mean.)

Yeah i need to get on this for my CYOAs, i'm convinced

Anybody got advice on how to get started?
