Here are my recommendations for sports anime/manga. There may be more and some are more sports adjacent. Also, I tend to prefer sports anime/manga that are more closer to the sports than the over the top ones.

Soccer
- Ao Ashi
- Giant Killing
- Be Blues
- Farewell, My Dear Cramer

Baseball
- Major/Major 2nd
- Ace of Diamond
- Adachi manga/anime like Touch, Cross Game, Mix
- Rookies

Basketball
- Slam Dunk
- Real

Others
- Chihayafuru
- Ping Pong the Animation
- Run with the Wind
- Yowamushi Pedal
- Capeta
- Redline
- Yuri on Ice
- Megalo Box
- Welcome to the Ballroom
- March Comes in Like a Lion

One thing I like about Ao Ashi manga is that the mangaka seems to know the nuance and inner detail of the sport and actually like the sport. Too often sports manga, the mangaka/author have just a very basic level understanding or no understanding of it. I also like that it takes place in a youth professional environment vs the typical high school sports team environment.

I cannot wait til the anime gets to a certain part of it and would like to see new viewers there reaction on it. So far I'm not a big fan of Ashito's VA. It could be the lines that are given to him so far.

Nothing really to say about Ao Ashi ep 4. It is following the manga pretty closely. The animation is fine with some wonkyness for a bit. I do like the casting of Akutsu. They have done his character well. I do like how the main point of the tryout to gauge how the players respond under adversity and see how they handle it mentally.

I caught up with BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls' Story- and I am all for what they are trying to do. The over the top golf works and I think the main characters are likable unlike a fair amount of over the top sports anime. I lol'd at the pacman golf ball and the Gunpla inserted into the show. They need to embrace that more and put more Bandai Namco property in it. I like the random generator golf course concept in the last episode.

Birdie Episode 5

More of a low key episode. Nafrece seems to have looks of influence from Japan. Also there were more Bandai Namco reference from the Turn A Gundam gunpla to the costumes in the VR. The next episode looks to be wild.

Also, discovered that Nafrece has been used in Madlax and Valkyrie Drive, which were also written by Yōsuke Kuroda who writes this anime too.

Ao Ashi Episode 5: The cost of the Japanese academy football system.

I enjoyed the episode. Instead of Nike football boots, the anime replaced it for just a non-branded football boot. It would been nice if they could have gotten Nike on to may emphasize more about the cost of supporting his football dream on the family's tight budget.

Lmao at what happened at the ending of the episode with Rose's robot arm exploding.

Ao Ashi ep 6

That guy on the right looks much older than a 15 year youth player.

Ao Ashi ep 7

Some of the animation in this episode is a little rough. Hopefully, they are putting their better talents and time for the actual matches. Aoi learns that football is not an individual sport especially when you are not technically skilled as others.

Caught up with Ao Ashi. The manga is easier for readers to digest about them discussing tactics than the anime. It may go over some viewers head about it. The animation is probably the weakest portion of the anime but sports anime in general never really had great animation. I would have loved to see this get better animation than what has happened so far. Maybe we will get some better animation when the real matches start. I do like that teammates do not see eye to eye with each other and the conflict and drama it leads. Also how some players are probably wondering how Ashito got into this team.

Here are some inspiration/locations from real life that is used in the anime.

And [Alexandros] released the full OP with a manga music video.

Ao Ashi 11

It is the first real match for the show. I found the episode to be enjoyable and flowed well. Ashito finally learns about triangles and that soccer is a team sport. One pet peeve of mine, however, is that they sometimes localized goals as points.

Birdie Wings 12

After this episode and the next episode preview, there is no way that there is not a season 2. I can see how season 1 ends and sets up for season 2.

Edit: Also this show probably only got created as a shameless advertisement for Gundam.

Birdie Wing 13: Didn't seem like it was planned to have a super long break and was just made like a "normal" episode instead of a season finale. It even had a next episode preview too.

Ao Ashi 13

This was the episode I have been waiting for. I am surprised that they did the whole conversation for this episode instead of leaving a cliffhanger and saving a portion of it for the next episode.

Edit: Also new OP and ED

Edit 2: They also changed it to Batistuta from Maradona in the manga due to Maradona passing away between the manga and anime.

The first episode of the new Shoot anime is pretty bad. It is going for the old school sports anime type of storytelling but all these characters seems to be terrible and unlikable.

It is especially bad if you compare it to Ao Ashi's storytelling.

Ao Ashi 18

Really took a nose dive in animation this week. Hopefully this is an outsourced episode and they are spending more time for the last few episode. No new episode next week as Japan is celebrating Obon Festival.
