Germany could've sent https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnzkhQsmSag, but the NDR opted for boring pop instead.

I wish for Germany to get UK'd.

I remember that Germany's entry last year was really bad, but I think I've successfully blocked out all specifics of it from my memory. It was something about not caring about being cyber bullied or something? I remember I thought it was unfair that we got nul points and that song got points, even if not very many. Our song was bad but Germany's was worse.

It was called "I Don't Feel Hate" and oddly enough felt like they'd been dared to make the most hateable piece of music possible

Nah, qualifying from the semifinals is easy enough that I don't think it has mattered a lot.

However, winning the whole thing as the opening act of the final is probably a different story.

Yeah, if all things are equal then, according to statistics, the first lot has the hardest struggle to be remembered when voting starts. But all performances are not equal (duh). People will still remember the songs that differ from others and appeal to their tastes or politics or whatever.

It's good then that they were disqualified.

Imagine the online drama if the Ukrainian entry comes first with the public, but not with the juries - and then that costs them the win.

I don't expect that'll happen (2015 is pretty much the only time the jury favourite won when it wasn't also the public favourite, I think) but it'd be explosive if it did.

I've had to change the voting portal a bit this year, was having issues validating user entered names. You now get a randomly generated one from a short list of references with a number, like you're some kind of filthy Twitter user.

Feel free to mess about with http://crucialweb.net/eurovision today, I'll reset everything before the semi final tomorrow. I just wanna see if there's anything that'll break it before then.

e: also happy to add suggested names into the pool, I just did a handful that came to mind quickly.

I've briefly listened to all of tomorrow's songs, and I'm ready to give my expert opinion as someone who has listened to several musics over the years.

12 points - Ukraine: folk hip hop isn't my genre, but I'll do what I must to piss off the Russians.

10 points - Bulgaria: rock song with some good hooks, which I can appreciate.

8 points - Denmark: switches it up by transitioning from what you think is going to be another boring ballad into an up-tempo rock song. I can appreciate that.

7 points - Netherlands: the song honestly isn't that great, but I'm going to be chauvinistic with this one, and give it points just for being in Dutch.

6 points - Austria: an energetic techno song. Not too bad for what it is.

5 points - Iceland: this song is a bit boring, but I like the pretty blonde ladies.

4 points - Slovenia: with a title like that I was expecting to hate it, but honestly, it's not terrible.

3 points - Albania: mediocre R&B, but the video for it has some interesting visuals.

2 points - Lithuania: here's where it starts to get a little arbitrary. I guess of the remaining songs, this one annoyed me the least. Also, I think Lithuanian is an interesting language.

1 point - Portugal: I do not hate this song.

Dishonorable mentions (0 points):

Latvia & Norway: annoying meme songs.

Moldova: grating, irritating song, though I have to give some credit for originality, as the theme appears to be the reunification of Moldova and Romania.

Switzerland: boring ballad, and negative points for contradicting The Cure.

Oh poo poo, this snuck up on me fast. A storm earlier in the year took down our TV aerial but we never really watch live terrestrial broadcasts since the TV has BBC iPlayer built-in along with all the other streaming services.

But based on past Eurovisions the iPlayer stream is ridiculously delayed so I guess I'm spending tomorrow attempting to jury rig an aerial to receive Freeview.

Moldova always shows up with a Peak Moldova entry and I will always love them for it.

France is an absolute banger but I love Heimatærde and the ilk. Give me all the weird pre-Christian tribal Europe techno (sans the weird neo-Nazi bands they can fuckoff). I don't expect it to do amazingly though, too "French."

Armenia, Ukraine, and Cyprus are solidly listenable. Australia's is interesting.

I am sure some boring pop or ballad will win.

It's kind of bizarre to me that despite so many great songs having originated from the UK since 1960 at least, their ESC entries for the past two decades straight have been "not actually offensive" at best. Even we (the Netherlands) have learned to at least occasionally submit something that isn't entirely crap...
