Which legions are you new folks thinking of starting?

I already have some unlovable garbage nerds (the Word Bearers) in 40k, so I'll be collecting their loyalist counterpart and starting a Dark Angels army.

Gameplay wise, mk ii - mk vi are all the same. Artificer armor is ornate suits of any mark and give a 2+. There are differences for terminator armor, Tartaros being faster but less protective than cataphractii.

Lorewise, there are some preferences (DG and IW leaning towards mk III, Raven guard having lots of mk vi), but every legion had enough of every mk of armor that you could do any legion in any mk and still be 'lore accurate'.

The forgeworld ones would work great, although if the plastic heavy weapons kit with the lascannon is like the other boxes, they could be converted to work with mk III or iv with minimal effort.

Finished my Word Bearers test model

Also, my pre-order arrived and wouldn't you know it, but the bookmark I got has a flaw in the red paint on the eye. It almost looks like there was a bubble or something that popped. Contacted support on Wednesday but no response yet.

That looks fantastic, especially the flames on the tilting shield and the bolter.

I have a resin Word Bearers dreadnought, and they look around the same size. Note that the Word Bearers dreadnought is leaning forward at around a 25 degree angle where the Dark Angels one is more or less upright.

It seems like combi-plas on seekers is not worth it over the default kraken bolters/specialist ammo, unless I missing something.

The combi-plas is 1 use only, 24" Rapid Fire, S7, AP4, Rending(4+), and turns off your ability to fire Scorpius rounds

A Scorpius round is 24" Assault 1, S5, AP4, Breaching(4+), and can be fired every turn.

Am I missing something that makes plas worth the 10pts per model this edition? You are getting at best 1 extra shot at probably +1 to wound over the scorpius, and am then stuck with a standard S4, AP5 bolter the rest of the game. The only thing I can think of is for try to burn down dreadnoughts or trying to get shots at light vehicles.

Now that we're a few months after release- how are your local metas shaping up? What's hot what's not?

We have around 8 regular players, evenly split between traitors and loyalists. Outside of 2 players, we're all new with the second edition, so are still working up to 3k points. So far people are keeping it fairly reigned in, with no more than 1 contemptor per 1k points, no named characters. We're loving the new edition, especially the reactions.

Has anyone put out an army builder yet? Outside of just paper and pen

Battlescribe is probably ok, as long as you double check the points, but apparently some of the legions (Ultras and SoH are the two that I've heard are worst) are in a pretty bad shape.

Quartermaster, which is paid and IOS only, is also apparently pretty good.

Thinking of doing this as something fun - anything dumb i've done jump off the page to you?

(1k starter list)

2 contemptors at 1k is likely to be a bit much unless your opponent is expecting it.

You will need a praetor or delegatus consul to use a rite of war (unless the Speaker has Master of the Legion)

I was gonna say the same thing, whoops!

Looks like a nasty 1k starting list that some will struggle with. Here was my take on a 1k Dark Angels list and I have a grand total on 0 idea on how it will work. Ignore what Hex everyone has as I'm still playing with that stuff. I'm definitely light on staying power for my scoring units.

A couple of things:

If you have the models, I would swap out the caraphractii with inner circle knights, which slap incredibly hard.

I would switch the augury scanner from the 1st tactical squad to the recon marines. If you have night fighting, being able to shoot with the full range of the nemesis bolters would be nice.

If you are going to run Augurs of Weakness, I would switch it up with a higher strength weapon than the greatsword for maximum vehicle hunting power. Alternatively either slayer of kings when Deathwing or hunter of beasts for dreadnought hunting are very good.

Although at 1k points it might not matter as much, a rhino or other transport for the warcrime squad would be nice, as they are very short range and your opponent will likely be gunning for them if they have any idea of what they can do.

For Line, I feel like 3 at 1k is more than enough, but that might depend on your meta.

Do people like putting pintle-mounted weapons on their battle tanks? I have a predator that's I running with volkite turrets and sponsons and a sicarian with las sponsons, and am wondering if a heavy bolters/havoc launchers are worth sticking on the top.

For those of you playing regularly, how has your local meta evolved?

My local store is generally abiding by some soft comp limits (generally max 3 dreds at 3k, or 2 + a primarch), but I've generally been seeing people skew very infantry heavy, with generally maybe only a Spartan for the terminator deathstars, which are very in style still. Everyone who plays regularly started with 2.0, so the unit diversity isn't great, but I think once some more people get Scorpiuses (Scorpiui?) built, it might tilt back. One of the better players runs Iron Warriors, which makes it so if you are bringing vehicles, you want to bring a lot to threat overload, otherwise they all go boom turn 1.

Had another game tonight! We rolled Onslaught which was a pretty silly mission. My Kakophoni were absolutely my MVPs with some amazing rolling, and his Sons of Horus are just brutal dicks.

I love the way EC plays so far, where everything works when it works. But try to use any tools wrong and they snap.

Anyway, we ran into a few questions:

1. Are shroud bombs 'always on?' They're listed in the grenades section of the rules but I feel like I need to do something other than just have them equipped. Which makes them about even with the Sisters of Silence special and that seems like you'd need to do something like throw it.

2. Can a particular unit react more than once in a phase if you have the reactions for it? Like if you get an extra reaction in the shooting phase, can a unit Evade twice against two different attacks, or Return Fire against two different units?

and last, mostly because I'm old any my brain is a mush of 30+ years previous editions:

3. When a unit is down to the last man, is it just a regular squad with one guy? The Last Man Standing rule is about other stuff and my friend thought he'd need to roll insane courage to rally and I remember ... something about this situation.

1. Yep, they are always on.

2. No, you can use the same reaction twice on two separate units in the phase if you have the reactions, but each unit can only react once per phase.

3. Yeah, he's just a dude at that point. Double 1's always pass morale, but there isn't any specific buff for being down to 1 guy.

Goonhammer released a 6 mission pack for HH today. They look a lot tighter and more fun then the core book missions, which are not great. https://www.goonhammer.com/goonhammer-approved-horus-heresy-mission-pack-2023/

I honestly can't imagine playing against Custodes on ZM with a marine army, let alone Hard Mode with the IM. Your melee is going to have functionally zero chance against Custodian Guard, but I guess you could go blob infantry squads with Discipline Masters, and try and drown them in bodies?
