I haven't read the last three pages. I will when I am at work and have some time to kill and need a good long read. I just want to say thank you so much for doing this, for this service, for taking up the call, answering the bell, and so on and so on. I used to read Wizard cover to cover in the early 2000's and have many fond memories of the frivolous bs in there. This thread has just become my favourite and I haven't even read it yet.

I need votes yay or nay on the following. Don't go out of your way to vote unless you back up your reasoning. Coming up soon in a few issues they start doing monthly cosplay articles. Do we want to actually unleash these back into the world? Are people ready for content of such a quality like early '90s cosplay? What say you thread readers?

I vote yay because I am curious what people were cosplaying in the 90's. I assume that every article was about someone cosplaying character of the decade Dawn. Prove me wrong.

I keep checking the fan art to see if there are any future superstar artists there. Also it is amazing how little of a presence DC had compared to Marvel. I think Mavel was basically just cranking it out in the early 90's while DC was focusing more on just chugging along and not doing anything too crazy. It kind of payed off in the end as Marvel got too bloated (just look at all the stuff about them in the Wizard issues) whereas DC could hardly come up with any hip new characters but still had some solid lines.
Also all the way on page one is an interview with the Simonsons which is worth reading as it pretty much predicted the collapse of comic books after the boom years before stuff like Image came out. They mention the idea of people buying multiple titles expecting an investment which makes no sense if everyone is buying multiple titles. They mention how it isn't sustainable, and they mention the style over substance. I remember reading a keynote address by Gaiman in his book of non fiction writing where he is giving a speech to a bunch of comic pros. He predicted the very same thing and how they can save comics by not chasing sales but rather putting out good products. It's kind of fascinating to see people calling this out in the early 90s.

One to cut up, one to read, one to bag and seal away in a safe. But wait, you need two of the one you get for free if you cut up the others, so you need for four to get two.

I know the comic bust killed a lot of the smaller publishers (hell it nearly killed Marvel too) but it is kind of crazy to see a bunch of smaller publishers getting even a tiny bit of hype before it all came crashing down.

I will say that the articles and interviews are a whole lot better written than the stuff that came out in the 2000s. Good job Wizard.

Recommending Cerebus to the woman letter writer asking for better representation of women in comics has aged really really really badly. Also asking for pictures of women comic book readers. That has also aged really really really badly.

Oh man Maximum Carnage is starting soon. I remember the video game. And also Shriek. I remember seeing the trade for it on sale at some second hand book shop a few years ago and have real buyers remorse not picking it up.

I grew up in South Africa and the only comics I had access to was Marvel and DC (and I guess Archie). There was a comic shop that did sell Image comics and a sprinkling of other publishers but that was all the way out in a different suburb and the comics there cost about 3x what a DC/Marvel comic cost at the newstand. Anyway, with that said I had no idea about Valiant at all, or that it had so much hype behind it, or that people (or at least Wizard) thought that it would be the next big hot thing.

I recently picked up trades for Knightquest to get into some sweet sweet nostalgia and it is impressive how much they set up AzBats as being completely unhinged. I seem to remember reading an interview with O Neil I think it was who said AzBats was created to show how stupid and shallow these gritty anti heroes are, and I always wondered if that was a bit of historical retconning but reading the comics I can see it. I guess the writers couldn't really say that in the Wizard article but Moench comes close to saying it when he talks about how dark AzBats is.

The funeral procession is quite an iconic image. I never had the poster (I never even read the Death of Superman until this year when I picked up a second hand copy of the trade) but I remember seeing that image everywhere ( in DC comic)

Also I am thinking Scorpion Corps wasn't long for this world. What terrible art.

If I wasn't lazy I would compile a list of all the publishers and lines mentioned/advertised in Wizard that no longer exist. Stuff like Legend, Lightning, Sky, Triumphant, Revolution, Now etc. Not all of those had articles written about them outside of Wizard News but there were a lot of random companies that seem to have lasted no more than a year or so.

Wake up and smell the 90s indeed. I actually have both copies of Spawn/Batman Batman/Spawn. The DC one was just a reworking of Gothic by Morrison with the numbers filed off (seriously the plot is almost exactly the same), and the Image one, while having better art, was just Miller practicing for All Star Batman with Batman being a dour near homicidal maniac. I think I have reread the DC one the most just because it is a simple storyline that is a pale imitation of Gothic.

For all it's faults I really really liked 90's Catwoman. I'm sure part of that was because I was a teenage boy but the comics themselves just had a fun energy to them.

I know the general thing about Image being late for their releases was because....they are Image, but is there a bigger story about why the release of Image titles was so chaotic and it's impact on the industry as a whole. Was it just slow artwork? Was it soliciting titles that never existed?

gently caress I forgot about Battle Chasers. I have the trade somewhere. I kind of liked it and was sad to find out that the series was pretty much dead.
I remember a random Wizard issue I had in the early 2000's (might have been in the late 90's even but I didn't really start reading Wizard until early 2000's) which compared three "indie" companies to figure out which one was the best (indie in brackets because one of them was Marvel Knights). The compared Cliffhanger, ABC, and Marvel Knights and the article mentioned delays quite often.

loving lol at Tekno-Comix, the comic where we get a big name person to give us a character name, let us put their big name on the cover and then have said big name person have nothing to do with what was inside the comic. There was a lot of chutzpah with those comics.
Also I am just reading the letter comments and the one sent by the angry mom about the soft core porniness of Vampirella and the mom mentions that she let her 6 year old read it because it is a price guide and I wonder what 6 year old would be interested in price guides?

Everything about the Marvel restructuring just reminds me of DC's new 52 for some reason. Maybe it's the creators not having any idea what is going on and editorial just loving things up.

edit: oooh Patrick Gleason fan art!
