In June, 2022, it was announced that Owlcat Games would release a Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader game.

Owlcat Games

* Owlcat Games is a Russian Developer who have previously released two Pathfinder RPG Computer Games, Kingmaker, and Wrath of the Righteous), but this will be their first effort in the Warhammer Universe.

* Before you immediately associate Owlcat with the current Ukrainian Hellwar, they have announced they are moving many of their programmers to neighboring countries as a result of the invasion)

* Past couple games have been 100 plus hour games that were buggy/janky on release, but actually turned pretty drat good after some patching (could this be why it looks like the game will release in Beta/Early Access to everyone?)

What is a Rogue Trader?

Well, there's the official version and the Grimdark version:

Press Release Description posted:

You will take on the role of a Rogue Trader, a scion of an ancient dynasty of daring privateers, that reign over their own merchant empire and explore the fringes of Imperial space with the blessing of the Emperor Himself. Thanks to their Warrant of Trade – the Rogue Trader is endowed with privileges and power beyond imagination as well as the task of expanding the borders of the Imperium. At their disposal is a gargantuan voidship of immense power and innumerable servants and personnel ready to do the bidding of their lord. Their adventures begin in the vast Koronus Expanse—a treacherous region of unexplored space at the edge of Humanity’s domain.

Exploration will bring the protagonist to mysterious lost and forgotten worlds as well as numerous planets claimed by humanity—from lush Agri-Worlds to steel-clad Forge Worlds, all of them ready to be claimed for your burgeoning merchant empire or plundered for their riches. While traveling between the stars, get ready to come across potential allies and dangerous enemies of the Imperium, Chaos cults and alien Xenos counting among the most treacherous and deadly.

You will make fateful decisions that affect the lives of entire worlds. You will prove your strategic and tactical skills in high-impact turn-based battles against powerful opponents.

No Rogue Trader travels alone: on this dangerous journey into the unknown, you will meet faithful and sophisticated companions. Imagine fighting alongside a mighty power armored Space Marine, a lethal Aeldari Ranger, or even a courageous Sister of Battle armed with bolter and ardent prayer—these characters and many others will join you.

In-Universe: A Rogue Trader is authorized by the Imperium to find new planets to allow the Imperium of Man to expand and trade outside of the Imperium's boundaries. They are the Imperium's explorers and wanderers.

Grimdark: Imagine the most grimdark fascist star nation possible (who claims that all these external threats require fascism to survive). Rogue Traders are the combination evil merchants and Conquistadors finding new planets and determining if the planet is worth invading and taking over.

Videos/System

* It looks like they will be using the Fantasy Flight Games Rogue Trader system (a percentile based/roll under mechanic) for their game (source: https://twitter.com/OwlcatGames/status/1532073794839318528)

Edit: Owlcat Games twitter feed said the game will be based on the Rogue Trader RPG rules, but not slavishly adhere to them, and turn-based (https://twitter.com/OwlcatGames/status/1532469152539107338)

* Announcement video and brief teaser video Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4VUmndj9rw

When does the game come out?

* Game is currently being offered for pre-order, with a variety of options, including a $99 developer's Pack that will offer Alpha access, but it looks like all pre-orders will qualify for beta access.

https://roguetrader.owlcat.games/preorder/en/compare

* Game will release on PC (all storefronts) and consoles (although the past couple games have had multiple years between PC and Console release, so it's likely that there will be a significant break between the PC release and the Console Release)

A couple of the Ciaphas Cain books deal with a planet that has a major promethium refinery, that was attacked by a massive Ork Waaagh. Rather then lose the refinery, they got used to once every few generations, a particularly cunnin and brutal Ork would get through the punitive raids meant to keep the Orks at a manageable level and start building up a Waaggh needing outside help to clean up.

Considering the sometimes... interesting notions of alignment that goes into the Pathfinder CRPG's, I wonder if Owlcat's going to use a WH40K version of it in their conversations in this game,.

T'au Warrior: "Fine, human. We will join forces to get rid of this greater threat for the Greater Good"

1. (Diplomat) This will benefit both the T'au Empire and the Imperium.
2. (Guarded) Until such time as our greater foe has been vanquished. Afterwards.... is afterwards

All this discussion about positions etcetera reminded me to a campaign pitch I was making to someone who thought it was hard to make a Warhammer 40K RogueTrader game not excessively grimdark.

Cross over McHale's Navy/F Troop (without its brand of racism) with it. The lowliest son of the dynasty operates a small outpost on the fringes of a trading empire. They've got a pretty good racket going, and do as little work as possible, but it's a challenge to make JUST enough profit to keep them assigned to this little bit of lazy paradise, and not too much profit (if the bosses think you can be used elsewhere, then you'll lose this easy sinecure)

You know the old meme "Yes Commissar, this thread here" when you want to point out heresy?

This is slightly different.

"Yes, thread, this Commissar here" when you want to point out what happens when people commit heresy

This is a possible player portrait (and possibly an archetype option), not a follower.

I want to hang the nickname of Komissar Stalin on him already

edit: Also, Dark Heresy fans rejoice, you're getting a new Dark Heresy-style d100 game from Cubicle 7, called Imperium Maledictum (from what it sounds like, it's DH 3rd edition in all but name)

For those of you who want to whet your Rogue Trader-related appetite before the game announces its alpha release (I'm trying to avoid getting alpha access via the $99 edition, but I have a feeling I'm going to give in), they released a book about three Rogue Trader families trying to penetrate the Great Rift.

Known Alpha Issues:

Known issues list:

Some items may be impossible to equip for some characters, but it is not reflected anywhere in the tooltip;

Visuals on models and equipment are work-in-progress and may not reflect the final appearance;

Space combat, exploration and colonisation are in draft stage and may significantly change later;

Healing system may feel confusing, for example characters can’t die out of combat - will be updated;

Psykers are overall incomplete and lack their own skill trees, they will be added later;

All numbers and stats are subject to change - none of them are final;

Ship parts cannot be used for now, but their presence in the cargo may be checked in some events;

There will be way more types of loot, such as implants;

Visuals of the star system map and movement of the ship over it are incomplete or may look odd - this will be improved later;

Quick update: There's no tutorial AT all right now, so the first battle which sees you take on like 12-15 scum (this is the beginning of Chapter 2 btw), you're looking at all these buttons going "huh wha? What's momentum, and how does everyone make that number go up? How are things calculated.."

You will likely bounce off a bit at first because of it

From reddit, a review of today's stream with the developers:

I don't remember everything but I'll recap what I do and people can post stuff in the comments.

chapter 2 (the alpha) is roughly thirty hours and is the longest or one of the longest. They wouldn't say how many chapters there are but did say if you'd played the pathfinder games you'd be satisfied with the length of the game.

You can't control multiple ships or build an armada. (They were a little cagey about this point tbf)

alpha will last a few months, alpha keys are separate to beta/full game keys. Beta will have more content than alpha but they haven't fully decided what yet.

some weapons have multiple attacks (this is already in the alpha but sounds like there will be more)

There will be roughly twenty portrait options and a character creator.

Combat and ship combat are still very early days a lot more skills to be added and there will be more careers/advanced careers.

backgrounds are different to careers and also have abilities but this isn't fully implemented yet for example psyker is a background.

They are planning to allow you to play as a psyker but seemingly you will be a latent psyker so I don't know if that's something you choose at character creation or later. So not a sanctioned psyker.

You can be a chaos worshipper, become corrupted and corrupt some companions. I think they even said you can potentially access chaos sorcerery.

some companions will leave you or try to kill you if you make certain choices.

you can only play as human

they aren't ready to announce romances yet.

Combat focuses more on active abilities than buffs

you can do very bad/brutal things if you want

game won't be fully voiced but partially voiced like their other games.

no admech background

dual-wielding and two-handed fighting will be implemented (also chainaxes among others)

they are looking at implementing the mercenary system To add:

Game is set AFTER the Rogue Trader Tabletop setting, since the Koronus expanse already has quite a few settlers. But we don't know whether it is Era Indomitus or not.

There will be cybernetics

You cannot romance the ship itself ;)

No triple-wielding chainswords

(From another post)

A latent Psyker Background has been confirmed for the RT.

A Mechanicus Background is being considered for RT, but not yet confirmed

Combi weapons are possible, but are very rare.

Banter between companions confirmed.

Aeldari and Soroitas can be in the party together. Extends to others, and can even mention how much they REALLY dislike the other.

Length of the Game? Cant say yet, long, rather long.

Zooming out further than you currently can has some technical issues, as well as performance issues.

Space Combat needs a wider view, its very early in the alpha stage compared to ground combat, and should get some functions to help with it.

Ship control? One ship and an escort atleast so far? has not gone into info about maximum ship counts.

Can you move towards chaos/heretical? Yes.

Future content will be included, but most likely not the start of the game.

Any Unique Weapons? Yes.

The player character will always be a Rogue Trader, so options have been included to get around otherwise static careers.

Brutal dialogue/options, Yes (I think we have seen or heard about some already).

Path exclusive companions. Basically if you follow Chaos, for example, you may have to fight more loyalist companions down the line.

How many Careers will you have access to in the game? Four Basic Careers, six Advanced Careers, and some number of Elite Careers.

Will choices be added to get unique careers (I think this question was about your choices leading to new career options)? No, they would be more background type things.

Do you need a level of 40k lore to play? In the Alpha, maybe. However you can hover over things to get tooltip boxes and explanations. The actual game will start at a place where you won't need to know anything and you will get explanations.

Can you get improvements to characteristics? Yes, through 'leveling up' (I assume this means increasing ranks in careers), and maybe items?

Will we see amazingly rare weapons like those in the lore? We'll certainly see some relics, which could also be weapons.

The game is set after the TTRPG version of Rogue Trader's time line.

There will be character customisation.

How many portrait options? Atleast 20 so far, one for each background option both for male and female.

Can you add cybernetics to your Rogue Trader? Yes. You can find implants in the game, but not implemented yet.

Can you romance the ship? No.

Is there a chance to visit a space hulk, pretty sure art work for it exists already and has been shown?

How many factions are there? Four factions for reputation. In terms of 'race' factions they've shown at least four of them. Plus varies types of enemies.

Can you fall to chaos? Yes. Can you corrupt your companions? Some of them.

Can you wield 3 Chainswords and become Chainsword man? No (So this kind of confirms no additional limbs able to wield extra weapons via cybernetics/mechadendrite or mutations. Maybe the Explorator NPCs ability to have two two-handed weapons as they do in the Alpha will be unique to them within our party?).

Heavy Flamers will be in the game.

Melee dual wielding will be possible.

Shields are not available at this stage (assuming they mean shields as per weapons tables in the TTRPGs rather than force fields).

Jump packs? They have thought about it, but probably not.

Will you receive negative reactions for being a witch? Well some yes if they discern it.

Can the Space Wolf get a wolf to ride? There are no wolves on Fenris.

Can you retrain your NPCs? They aren't really bound to melee or range things. You can still move them initially to be which ever (referring to the fact that in the Alpha you are already a fairly leveled party but in the actual game you can level them differently if you want).

Can you be a Null? There are no plans for Nulls (Blanks), they aren't very likable folks, you'd get passed for being a RT candidate.

Will there be Mutations? Its one of the ideas that can change if your more heretical, not sure yet though.

Release window, Sorry not announced yet.

Can you exterminatus a planet? No. Potentially, need to confirm, see comment below.

Can Argenta have something like Repentia build? Yes.

Will there be much 'endgame' content where you get to play with your finished/max level equivalent character? No, there will be a similar amount to the Pathfinder games.

Couple things they posted in the Reddit thread regarding the survey results

quote:

Redditor: Interesting read. I honestly felt most of the space combat balance issues would be fixed by implementing the ship upgrade systems, and allowing the RT to perhaps have a squadron of his own as time went on. 5v1 ship battles are going to be unbalanced no matter how powerful the 1 is.

OwlcatStarrok: Ship systems are a thing as well.

quote:

Redditor: really do hope more than anything the space combat becomes a lot faster. My biggest issue with Owlcat games are how you'll have momentum going with the story and then bam, you're taken out of it for an hour to deal with the mini game stuff. it's even worse if you lose a long space battle. I likely don't see myself interacting with this stuff too often and will probably opt to go the route I did in wrath, and save edit it out of relevance, but maybe with the right changes making it less of a chore I'll give it a shot.

OwlcatStarrok: It will be :)

and finally

quote:

Redditor: Great read. I know i'm most likely in the minority, but will there be an option to skip the space combat? An autobattle option like the crusade management, maybe? I really don't like it, but the rest of the game is amazing.

OwlcatStarrok: Not in for the beta, but since it more or less follows the same design philosophy as previous games, there's a high chance there will be such an option. However, do take time to check the updated and improved combat in the beta when it's out, it has made a few big steps forward :)

Here's the ship combat beta guide info: Apparently they added a bunch of stuff:

Space Combat
1. You only have a single ship and 6 officers performing different duties on the ship.
2. Every officer can only use one ability per turn. Their cooldowns are random.
3. More abilities will become available as the game progresses.
4. You cannot stop the ship in space combat - you have to move a certain
distance to continue the turn. However, you can move in multiple steps,
shooting weapons and moving in any order.
5. Maneuvering is important - the voidship turns slowly and every weapon has a
specific firing direction or arc.
6. You can only shoot each weapon once per turn.
7. You have a separate total HP pool for the hull and 4 individual directional HP
pools for the shields, visible around the ship. Shields can be restored during
combat through the Restart Shield ability. Keep the active shields rotated towards
the enemy!
8. Enemy ships are subject to the same rules.
9. Enemy ships have abilities. Aeldari ships may create holofields, pirates may flee,
Drukhari ships may become hard to hit when they are not attacking.
10. You can launch torpedoes - they are controlled separately and need to be guided
into the enemy ship.
11. Victory in space combat provides you with various loot and Scrap, a resource
used to repair your ship.
12. The voidship now has a management interface available from the system map.
It contains 3 tabs:
- Upgrade, where you can repair the ship and insert new ship modules;
- Skills, where you can select new skills after leveling up your ship;
- Posts, which will later contain officer combat post management, but this content
is unavailable in the Beta.
13. In the Beta, you can now ram the enemy ship. We know you’ve been waiting for
it!
14. New powerful ship abilities are introduced in the Beta. These abilities charge
slowly, often over the course of multiple battles, but offer a significant advantage
when activated.
