And here I thought that there was nothing I'd ever find relatable with Trump, but it's a brave new world I'm living in.

it's the easiest way to ensure Nauta does not talk about his crimes (as he pardoned Manafort/Stone/etc to do the same) and it'd have to virtue of making the prosecution end immediately.

he could also kill it in other ways, like he mostly did with mueller, but those take longer and aren't as reliable

If you put up the full value in liquid, why are you involving a bond company.

Another loss for the American judicial system to just let this poo poo skate.

Yeah, I don't get why you'd use a bond company at that point. It makes some sense when you're securing the bond with otherwise non-liquid assets. But using fully liquid assets to secure a bond just means you're paying extra for no reason.

I guess the real reason is that Trump intended to stiff the government and bond company by transferring out the funds at the last second when they came due, which he can't now.

I guess another angle is that this way he retains ownership of the assets so his net worth doesn't go down, and this whole case is about how he's obsessed with keeping that number high.

Honestly Trump's lawyer is doing a fantastic job of getting Trump thrown in the pokey but I doubt the judge would do that as he knows Trump will fundraise off it and likely use it in appeal to say the judge was unfairly harsh.

The trial should last long enough to give Trump ample opportunity to violate the gag order after being punished for it beforehand. IIRC he stopped violating the gag order during the civil trial adter having to pay escalating fines.

Also, the judge hasn’t made a ruling or said anything about the punishment. It was the prosecution that requested fines instead of jail time so far.

A lot of the issue surrounds the fact that Trump's fans are insane so throwing him in jail might spark violence so the judge has to be careful.

I mean, the difference is in what those tier are defined as. We know the system is rich (no consequences) vs poor (all the consequences and then some); Trump is claiming it’s conservatives (persecuted like no others) vs communists (free to do whatever they want, all the time).

I'm sorry, but gently caress that noise. We do not have a two tier system of justice in this country because someone controls a mob. Mob rule is one of the major causes of the fall of the Roman Republic and if we are not careful and keep tiptoeing around people who have assembled their own mob today we might have the same fate.

Throw his rear end in jail, prove to him, the MAGAssats and the country that the same system of justice applies to everyone.

Escalating massive fines is probably the way to go and it has shut him up a bit in the past. He seems to desperately want to be thrown in jail with all the fundraising and "they're going to jail me tomorrow" messages he's been sending. Definitely a tough call for the judge since anyone else looking cross-eyed at the jury would have been bond revoked a while ago.

as far as i am concerned this is the point where we are pretty done testing "the court is being careful to just give him rope to hang himself with, contempt of court would just empower him" to "the court is scared to hold him to any meaningful standard of contempt that applies to the non-powerful"

there needs to be contempt charges or his method is a 100% validated system of witness and juror intimidation going forward lol

Unfortunately, the maximum monetary fine is $1000 per violation. The only escalation is remanding the defendant.

My guess is Merchan will hit him for $10K-$12K and then jail him after he violates it again.
