I've been trying to watch some horror movies but it feels so weird watching them and not getting scared like I used to as a kid, it feels like you are missing the point of the whole thing. But then again, does anyone get scared by them anymore? Like, who the gently caress actually believes in ghosts (i know we have a thread going on gbs about that too)/curses/whatever in 2022? With that said, any horror movie recommendations???????

Past age 35 or so, most of your natural fear response goes away because you're already supposed to be dead. Anyway, it's not exactly a horror movie but Mulholland Drive is the movie that still creeps me out the most. It's also my favorite movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yusKlHgtvIE

They're not scary, no. Startling, maybe, but jump scares are so played out now that they're hardly even that anymore. But I have to say I've gotten squeamish with age. I was once able to watch the goriest of gory scenes, but I really can't tolerate blood at all nowadays.

Old horror movies still scare the poo poo out of me. Jump scares are the loving worst and some movies have been entirely based off of them. Stuff like The Exorcist still scares me. Actually I think that's my #1 horror movie, if not one of my favorite movies ever. It's more psychological and a slow burn. Alien is a good one too. For some reason Wes Craven's New Nightmare kinda gets me too. Oh god, The Thing. That's a great one. I don't know of a newer horror movie that really got to me. edit: torture porn is the worst and I hate everyone who makes those types of sick movies

Exorcist is (in)famous for having some of its scary scenes actually be torturous to the actors involved.

That's true. There's a bit of some behind the scenes stuff that was not great for the actors. Still, one of the best movies ever made.

I'm glad you're going to watch The Exorcist, OP. You don't gotta be religious to find it unsettling. Unsettling is what I look for in horror movies these days more than scared. I like how it lingers. Poster above mentioned Hereditary, but for more of this feeling I also recommend The Innocents (1961) The Haunting (1963) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (you know which one) The VVitch It Follows The Shining The Thing The Terror (miniseries) The Ritual Creep And for a great time with some great creatures, please watch Return of the Living Dead

Surprisingly I wasn't the biggest fan of The Shining movie. I love the actors and Kubrick is ok I guess, but it was even too slow for me. It was Kubrick who did it though. Boring shots and holding onto them for too long. I like the pace a little but he held it for too long. In my opinion. I just read the book maybe 2 years ago or so and it was absolutely fantastic. Probably one of my favorite books ever. edit: I think he did 2001 too, which holy poo poo. Watching monkeys dancing around an obelisk for 20 minutes was infuriating. I don't think I made it through that movie after multiple attempts (on TV). I'm sure he's a great artist but I have my limits. I still find myself getting caught off guard and flinching at those jump scares when I'm look at Instagram. Like when you are not expecting a baseball or snapping turtle to come right at the screen. So I guess... it's possible still? Though I can't actually remember being scared by a horror movie growing up. Sort of inured to them from a young age. My mom took me to a kids movie (The Black Hole??) and then walked us over to sit for the remainder of the movie my older cousins were watching, Friday the 13th. I remember finding the finale jump scare of Jason to be disturbing, but not necessarily scary. Return of the Living Dead freaked me out because the zombies could run at normal speed. The possibility of zombies becoming reality and not being able to outrun them horrified me for many years. Also I remember a really vivid childhood nightmare (age 5-6) of me becoming that Antartic seed-pod creature from the old Tom Baker Dr Who episodes. So I guess you don't entirely suspend your disbelief in the moment and process fear in different ways later? Fright Night was one of my 80's favorites. The Blob and Them! were some cool classic 50's horror movies.

"True horror is seeing something approach." Sadly, however, is that modern western society only sees inevitable harm and terror approach. Whether it be climate change, economic nihilism, or the oppressive encroachment of fascism, there is so little to truly tap into the generational zeitgeist which we do not otherwise experience regularly in our daily lives. The specters of mass shootings, random acts of violence, or capricious changes of fortune (not to mention the inundation from lackluster offerings) have rendered the jump scare almost ineffective. We expect bad things to happen, and maybe they're nothing, maybe they're something, but it's something that can be laughed off an instant later. At least until the next one occurs. The most terrifying things of our age, at least to me, are those that we see approaching in a measurable, constant state. Climate change and the societal demands of capitalism being the greatest example. The film "Don't Look Up", despite any flaws, for example fed upon that constant unease about the future and the seeming ignorance of the global populace and elite toward an existential threat to create such a true sense of despair and isolation that only amplifies societal terror at the expected resolution of our misfortune. Modern cinema has moved beyond the concern of city destroying monsters or unstoppable serial murders, because we recognize that there are greater threats which do not require indulgence into secret Nazi monster drugs or supernatural revenge. Because we know that the most immediate threat to our personal lives are those of ignorance, complacency, and obeisance to malicious elements.

I had a real hard time selling it to my horror-loving family, but it ended up becoming a favorite. There's lots and lots of creeping camerawork and it does a wonderful job of playing on paranoia. One of the few agoraphobic horror films I can think of. Wasn't crazy about the pool scheme, but it's mostly excellent. It was one of those films where a few weeks after I'd look around at my surroundings and think, "Wow, if that thing from It Follows showed up right now I'd be hosed."

I don't know if I do really get scared during horror movies without it being dumb rear end jump scares just startling me, but they do make me feel pretty tense when they're good. It's fun. I watched the Exorcist the other night! I'd seen it before but it'd been so long that I forgot like most of everything about it. It was almost like watching it again for the first time. It Follows was great. Someone else mentioned Return of The Living dead, which is a goofy comedy mostly, but it's also kinda scary because, like, NOTHING kills those zombies except fire I guess, and fire just spreads around whatever's making them zombies so you just get more zombies. Also, yeah, they're fast. Tar Man looks cool, they did a good job on him. It's just a fun movie all around. I haven't watched part 2 in a long rear end time. Throwing Jacob's Ladder, The Descent and Pontypool into this list.

They ought to just call all the new poo poo “Surprise!” movies. Like why even bother with ghoulish makeup and poo poo, just have some rear end in a top hat in spandex and a lovely powder job come out from behind some planter trees and yell “surprise!” and then like a hot chick wets herself and takes a nap in the puddle.

Last movie that was scary to me was No Country For Old Men, in the theater those scenes where they're stalking around those motels and make any sound and they're dead, the tension got to me. When I was a kid stuff about the devil, selling your soul, stuff like that was always scary to me.
