I got back to work/activity fairly quick, maybe like 2-3 days, and I work as a carpenter so there’s plenty of lifting and stuff. Avoiding heavy lifting is usually only an issue when you have incisions that might bust open, such as with abdominal surgeries and the like. My doc gave me the ok to get back to work after a couple days and just told me to go based on how I felt. No issues here.

Everyone is different but generally you heal quicker with light activity as it gets the blood flowing and the bodily processes moving. Even open heart surgery patients get out of bed and stand up within 24h post surgery.

I moved around a bit the following week, but stayed at home because I have a fairly physical job. There's a part of my job where I can get on and off (slow) moving vehicles, but after trying it once and feeling like I just got hit in the nuts, I asked my driver for a full stop in all the places I usually don't, just for a day or two. He knew what was up, and was perfectly fine with it.

I'm now three months post vasectomy and I haven't had any issues aside from being slightly more sensitive to getting hit in the nuts. I'm hoping to get a sperm sample analysed a week from today.

Coming up on two weeks. I'm doing normal stuff just fine, but I get a reminder every now and then to take it easy. I was reefing on a wrench to remove some bike pedals, and I could feel the pain afterwards. Still another couple weeks before I can start lifting again (and boy am I looking forward to that—I really miss the gym).

The incision site is a big lump of scar tissue that's painful whenever my scrotum gets tugged on. But it's getting better everyday. Suspect that'll be gone in a few months.

My left vas gets painful whenever I ejaculate, but I suspect that too will go away in time. Really looking forward to getting the all-clear in the fall.

Edit: VVV lol VVV
Edit2: Four months later and I'm just now realizing that at-home sperm tests are actually a thing, and you didn't just ejaculate into a woman and she didn't get pregnant. :dumbgun:

Had mine done last year. Little unpleasant but not bad at all. Recovery was fine, aside from the wife who was supposed to take our little one with her on some errands reneging so I had to watch him while recovering. No pain after, no issues. 10/10 do recommend.

Had a vasectomy in March, and the first post-vasectomy semen analysis in June still showed sperm; the second test in late July showed all clear. I had thought that I needed two tests both showing clear to officially be considered sterile, or is that not true?

I did do a third test last week, but the lab hosed up reading my birth day, so they've been waiting on confirmation from the doctor's office. It's now been corrected and they're running the sample, but it's 6 days later now. The MA I talked to said that they usually put it in a special refrigerator (??) and do preservative, which seems... weird? So now I'm not sure if I can trust this test, and thinking about doing one of the at-home tests like SpermCheck.

You usually need two negative tests to be be officially considered sterile. It's going to depend on your provider, but the tests are spread out by time and number of ejaculations. I had my procedure in the middle of November, the first test the week before Christmas and the second in late January.

Well now I'm curious because I haven't heard this alleged rule of two. My doctor just wanted one test 90 days post op and it came back with no sperm. I, uh, studied quite a bit for this test, but I've read conflicting reports on whether or not the number of ejaculations actually affects the sterility.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but the medical assistant I talked to after the second test (first negative), said it was just one negative test now. When I looked online, it looked like the guidance on all this did change? I asked for the third test, for a second negative, for the peace of mind.

I ended up ordering a SpermCheck test off Amazon so I'll try and use it for the additional validation too.

Yeah, this is similar to how my doctor's office approached it.

That's how they do it when you donate sperm. To preserve it they have to freeze it at something like -196C. When they're done they thaw it out and see if anything survived, and if enough survive you can go ahead and donate regularly. Of course, you're on the other end where you want there to be nothing at all

So I can see the lab test result online and it says sperm present…

So Test 1 in early June was “present”, Test 2 in mid-July was “not present”, and now Test 3 (processed after 6
Days) is “present”. Now it’s all stressing me out… I guess I’ll see what the doctor’s office says about it.

Had mine yesterday. No biggie, so far. Sitting in my rear end as much as possible this weekend and back to office work Monday.

I've been basically 24/7 icing (obviously on/off not continuously), though I suspect id be fine at this point am gonna continue as much as possible because oh god do I not want any sort of pain down there.

They did have to do a little uhh, digging, due to a varicocele on one side and that was 80% of my pain. Like five numbs vs one, basically.

Having read the entire thread multiple times beforehand, not sure I expected to be getting hard the night after my surgery. And trying to will it away out of the anxiety that some part of pre cum involves those pathways.

Either way, annoying.

Worrying over nothing though, right?

I don't know why, but I've been getting more frequent boners since my surgery, even five weeks after. Might just be a coincidence. The first pee definitely had me anxious, though.

Ejaculating doesn't cause a dull ache anymore, or at least it hasn't in a long while. Still a bit sensitive to touch, though. The incision site doesn't hurt anymore, although there's a tiny bump there which doesn't feel like scar tissue, so I might follow up on that soon.

Hah, the first pee was anxiety inducing. As was the first poo poo, and I can only imagine my mixed feelings about my first ejaculation when I get there.

But day after and no big deal continues, no swelling or pain outside of a dull ache when not iced for a while. I'm bruised all over but was warned about that from the extra work involving the varicocele side.

Thus far, $825 for this (planned parenthood, filed insurance but that's the cost if I pay 100% out of pocket, no adjustments). They threw in the lidocaine for free, bless. ($65 itemized).

Well worth it, would recommend to anyone on the fence.

Been about six weeks. No lingering pain usually, but I'm still sensitive down there. My kid can't sit on my lap, and even sex leaves my balls sore most of the time. It's sore to the touch, but I felt around a little and found a lump that I'm starting to think is sperm granuloma. Might take weeks/months to go away. I'll ask my doc about it in a couple months when it's time for the first sample.

So, for some more personal experience /anecdotes. Day four, that's how long I lasted before I ejaculated and was terrified I'd gone too soon. Minor soreness. Same for next few days, but within two weeks like nothing had happened.

Now I wait to use my "here for my 1pm splooge collection" line I shamelessly stole from this thread in a few weeks.

Still an a+ would recommend procedure

I was one of the people who did have a complication. A blood vessel got nicked so I got a scrotal hematoma (I believe chances of this are roughly 1%). Lengthed overall recovery time to about a month. For that month I was quite swollen and rather uncomfortable. I was still very functional but I definitely had an increased intake of painkillers that month.

Even with the complication a would do it again in a heartbeat. One of the best decisions I've made.

18 weeks post-op, and the nurse has finally notified me that I can go for sample analysis. Overall they've been very professional, mature, and always friendly regarding the nature of the procedure, but the following instructions made me laugh:

quote:

They want the sample delivered within 30 minutes of collection. (If you do not live close enough, find a safe place for sample collection).

What a tactful way to encourage me to find a quiet place to jack off enroute to the hospital.

quote:

They want the sample delivered warm. You can tuck in your armpit or an inside coat pocket.
You need to hand it directly to someone in the lab. Do not wait in line, or take a number. Just kindly wait until no patient is being helped at the desk and approach the desk to let them know you have a “time sensitive sample”.

So when I get there, I need to make my way to the front of the line insisting I have a pocket full of semen and I need it looked at IMMEDIATELY.

To avoid some awkwardness—and because lab appointments book up really fast—I'm actually scheduling an appointment for my romantic day. I've put in my calendar when I have to stop ejaculating (3-7 days prior), when I have leave for my appointment, where and when I have to pull over and jerk off, and the most expeditious route to the laboratory. I guess I need to bring porn to ensure I deliver.

What could go wrong.

this is me posting irl
I had a vasectomy a few months ago. I went without the anti-anxiety pill and drove myself there and back. It went fine, there was a brief sharp pain when the needle for the local anesthetic initially went in, but after that there was no pain. There was a minute where it got real awkward because in the course of the small talk the urologist kept up, he somehow decided it was a good time to start talking politics and ask me my feelings on student debt forgiveness while he's got my nutsack open. :gonk:

Ill-timed politics chat aside I feel like I got a good urologist, he was still wearing an N95 mask in the office, and while he asked me in the consultation if I was aware of the nature of the procedure he didn't at all try to dissuade me from it despite never having been married or had kids.

I used the prescribed painkillers for the first couple of days, mostly to stay ahead of any pain, but after that while it was tender I found that just staying off my feet and occasionally icing my nuts kept down any pain without needing the painkillers.

The urologist also recommended one sperm test about ninety days after the procedure to confirm there were no sperm in my ejaculate, which I did and there weren't.

Overall seems like it was about as easy as one could hope for from a surgery.

Just got my results back: None Seen. Hooray!

Apparently the The British Andrology Society indicates the likelihood of pregnancy is low if two samples (two weeks apart), 16 weeks after vasectomy are azoospermic. I don't think my doctor will want to bother with a second test. just kidding, they want another one in two weeks

Very happy to finally have this off my mind.

Second specimen was no sperm, so the surgeon has given me the all-clear for real now.

A late development: I've been getting these headaches as orgasms build up, some of them pretty painful. Probably indicative of some other problem, but it was really difficult to produce specimens when these started happening out of nowhere. Ah well.

I'd talk to your doctor about that. It can be something completely benign or pretty serious, so better to get it checked out early.

Thankfully I don't have a headache so yeah, get that checked, but right around 26 weeks, I started to get pain in the build up to orgasm in the pelvic area, up to and including painful cramping feelings if release doesn't happen. The testicles and such don't hurt though, just the pelvic area above. I've noticed that if I have frequent-enough orgasms, I see little to no pain, but if more than a few days goes by, the pain and cramping returns.

I'm going to get checked sometime after the new year.

It took me about 5-1/2 months to get the all-clear, since my testing pattern was: Sperm (12 weeks) -> No Sperm (16 weeks) -> Sperm (20 weeks) -> No Sperm (26 weeks), the last being the full test with Motility and Reflex/Count at a testing center, so not sure if maybe some of that weirdness plays into it, or if it's just the dreaded PVPS.

Mine went fine, but I had an issue related to an inguinal hernia repair that had occurred six years prior (the scar tissue from it was inflamed by the vasectomy). Obviously that's not a common situation, but if you do have the procedure and have any pain issues that the urologist can't figure out, keep in mind there is subfield of PT dedicated to the pelvis (which is as fun as it sounds)

Nothing to see here. Move along.

In 2 weeks I'm having this done at the VA. I'm a dog walker/pet sitter so I took the weekend off and I'm assuming I'll be fine by the Thursday after to walk a couple of dogs that like to pull. I am nervous about it but mainly because its a new kind of surgery that is being done on my balls. I've had dozens of both out-patient and in-patient surgeries on various parts of my body so this isn't THAT new for me.

I do worry a little that I'm making a mistake since having a family is something that I never considered being a possibility for me, but I'll be 38 a week after the surgery and I'm single, and even if I found a girlfriend tomorrow it would still be a couple of years at a minimum before we would have a kid. I don't want to be 40 with a new born.

All told I believe this is the right decision, partly because I don't want to wait a couple of years and find out its now illegal.

Yep - take the weekend off and you'll be good by then. As with many others in this thread, I felt so good on day 2 I thought I'd take my dog for a brief walk. It went great, no pain on the walk, fantastic to get out and move.

Then about 2 hours later, I cannot remove my bag of peas for more than 5 minutes without deeply regretting my choice.

Just got my vasectomy done today. I originally had it scheduled a few weeks ago. Went to the doc's perfectly fine, everything was going well, had dragon quest 3 ready to go on my phone and *boom* nearly passed out. Vasovagal response!!!!! I went from feeling comfortable to having my blood pressure drop and just losing it. The doctor was cool about it and I've heard from all different kinds of groups that it happens and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it, so they rescheduled to have me put under. It's wild because i have gotten some pretty gnarly injuries over the years and watched my wife give birth with no problems, but the moment they started messing around down there :nsavince:

The whole thing went perfectly. Just drifted off on the table without any issues and they took care of it super quickly. I swear I had some (nice) dream about going on the ocean with my daughters but woke up and forgot all of it immediately lol

After maybe 15 or 20 minutes of chilling and waiting for a bit of the dizziness to wear off, my wife and I left and picked up the kids early from daycare and went home, where I took it easy. Im definitely sore but not as bad as I thought I'd be. Still, i'm not taking any chances so I've got my meds, my ice, and smoking a bowl for good measure

Oh hey, SA has a vasectomy thread.

I'm just over six weeks out from mine. Procedure went fine (yay Ativan) but recovery has been long and extended.

I took it super easy until day 9 of recovery and then picked up a bag of dog food and that was it for me. The pain has been a constant 3/10 and spikes 7-8/10 if I move too fast or pick something up. It feels like I'm getting poked in the side or bottom of either testicle, or at the base of each inguinal canal. The weird part is, I only feel pain in one place at once and it moves around.

I took some extra time off work as my job is fairly physical. I went back at the 5-week mark and ended up having to go to Urgent Care because of the pain. I got a testicular ultrasound that found nothing abnormal. I've healed fine apparently but the pain is still there. Toradol is an ok prescription painkiller but give me REAL vivid dreams.

I have an appointment with my GP on Tuesday to find out what the gently caress. My job put me on modified duties so at least I don't have to worry about income while this gest figured this out. Hopefully it just goes away on its own.

I'm glad most of the guys on the board haven't had issues, or their issues resolved. I was bumming myself out reading horror stories on r/Vasectomy in full knowledge that most dudes have no issues and thus don't post.
