At the most padded plastic batons and padded helmets practicing strikes and grappling at slow speed. We would be paired up to fight a trainer in a huge padded suit called RedMan(tm). He was allowed to use full force punches (he was wearing boxing gloves). We the students only had the plastic baton and only allowed to hit certain zones. He would trounce the poo poo out of the students, like no joke I took the hardest punch to my face in my life and barely recall the rest of the event. You would basically have to trip him up and knock them over to affect them at all. It sucked and I recall at least one person failing academy after falling apart from getting hit hard.
