Duel Masters isn't just still played in Japan, it's one of the big three TCGs over there while Magic sits in the next tier down.

mtg is now functionally weiss schwarz for americans

Not really. An important part of the business model for games like Weiss Schwarz is not being able to mix different ips in a deck. They function less like single TCGs in the traditional sense and more like collections of one or two set games for ips that couldn't necessarily sustain a game on their own that people interested in those ips can buy into without worrying about whether they'll be able to establish a player base.

Union Arena does not allow for mixing ips. It does have a couple of potential selling points over Weiss that aren't just "are you interesting in whatever ip the latest set specifically is tied to" though. It has an ip spread leans a lot more towards Shounen Jump properties and Namco games and a bit less toward seasonal late night anime and waifu factory media mix properties. It also plays more like what you probably expect out of a TCG than Weiss' weird competitively performing rituals to the top deck gods gameplay.

Other games currently active in Japan in the lots of small licensed games that share a player pool genre include:

Rebirth for You. Another game operated by Bushiroad, I have no idea what their logic is behind running multiple of these in parallel.

Weiss Schwarz Blau. Literally just Weiss Schwarz again with a separate card pool with simpler card effects and an ip spread targeted towards nerdy women.

Osica. Arguably a simplified revision of an older long running game called Precious Memories that alleviates that game's first turn decision paralysis issues.

A succession of games (actually marketed as separate games but they even use the same card frames and the player base treats them like one of these) based on second string Japan only gacha games using a simplified pokemon ruleset that lets you play any card face down as an energy put out by a company literally called TCG co,. Ltd.

Came across a video by a primarily Vanguard and Shadowverse Evolve youtuber who lives in Japan going through a sales chart for the top 15 TCGs in Japan for fiscal year 2023/4 and trying to give some context. I figured some people in here might be interested.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGx6iLz57uA

The chart if you don't want to deal with the video:

pre:

Place	Game Sales (in billion yen)	comparison with previous year

1	Pokemon 133.7 137%
2	Yu-Gi_Oh! 47.1 103%
3	Duel Masters 28.9 97%
4	One Piece 26.5 303%
5	Weiss Shwarz 13.9 147%
6	Magic the Gathering 5.3 94%
7	Battle Spirits 3.8 91%
8	Shadowverse Evolve 3.7 50%
9	Union Arena 3.2 643%*
10	Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel 3.1 114%
11	Cardfight! Vanguard 2.9 152%
12	Digimon 1.2 85%
13	Wixoss 1 104%
14	Build Divide 0.9 151%
15	Rebirth for You 0.87 74%

*The comparative data for Union Arena is kind of nonsense because it launched right at the end of the previous fiscal year.
