One of my first threads here on Something Awful was documenting my first impressions of the Godfathers (including live posting during Part III!). Good times, good times: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3896228

I eventually came to the conclusion that the meat of the story was contained almost entirely in Part II. The first one is perhaps better made but is almost like some superfluous origin story for the Al Pacino character.

Edit: And by that I mean it almost feels like they made Part II first and then afterward made a prequel all about "how Michael Corleone became Michael Corleone!"

I remember this thread and it rekindled my love of Godfather lmao thank you

III really isn't all as bad as its reputation suggests but it's not great. The plot itself is solid but execution lacks.

Top three main issues are:

It has a cheap glossy patina and they don't even pretend to make it look like the '70s it takes place in. This was a problem a lot of movies in the late 80s-early 90s had when it came to period pieces.
Sofia Coppola really is awful in it, bless her heart
Ultimately its just an inessential entry in the series

It was also made for wrong reasons (Coppola needed a financial hit to cover his tracks with the recent bombs), and while Sofia Coppola does adequate job as a last-minute replacement due to Winona Ryder doing a last-minute dropout, it was still a nepotism hire that was rightfully clowned. Andy Garcia also hams it up big time and isn't really convincing as a guy who becomes the next Don, although he did get an Oscar nomination out of it.

I loving hate andy garcia in this movie perhaps more than Sofia Coppola lmao

ugh he's just such a 90s character, that's the best I can put it

that movie should've been made at a different time with cryo-frozen copies of the cast from before, there's good ideas there but it just falls terrible victim to the time / circumstances it was made in

There are like ten Mario Puzo mob or crime novels in addition of Godfather, including the Sicilian, which would be the 4th Godfather movie it was ever made.

Netflix money van visited the estate and now we just need to wait and see which bombs harder, the Tolkien/LOTR series that comes 10 years too late, or this one.

lmao yeah running around in a shiny leather jacket with his slicked back hair, basically acting like his hothead character in Black Rain. Almost Nicholas Cage-ian (who, ironically, wouldn't have been a bad choice for the role and he's a Coppola to boot)

also I can't imagine Winona Ryder being any more credible in this than Sofia, at least the latter looks like she belongs in a mob movie that takes place in 1978 or whatever. Winona was like a living avatar of "This is 1990".

Ha, Cage IS a Coppola, I forget that. And yeah, I... I could see him in that role? Huh.

I feel like they tried to make Garcia a hothead 90s edgy dude take on Michael coming up and claiming his throne and it just...

I don't have high hopes for the corleone family lol

Well yes, several times apparently, but not as a part of the Godfather franchise. Similarly as Life of Crime really isn't a sequel to Tarantino's Jackie Brown.

It is an OK film but due to copyright and distribution wankery its almost impossible to see in EU region because its not in any major streaming service. I've seen it last time some 10 years ago so only thing I remember from it is that Pesci does that same "Joe Pesci mobster" again.

I like the part where Joe Pesci beats up Don Rickles with a phone.

Also the ending voiceover where De Niro is like "Vegas was better back when I was making a poo poo ton of money and could have people I didn't like fired, beaten, or killed".

I liked Godfather 3 but I also liked Jaws the Revenge too.

Whatever that guy's name was, who does the voice of Fat Tony on the Simpsons, he did a good job of making me hate his character.

And at the time I had the hots for Sofia Coppola. But some people tell me I have weird taste in women, so maybe thats bad or weird or something.

Overall pretty good but I forgot how much runtime the Sam-Ginger-Nicky conflict eats up 3/4 of the way through. I mean, it serves a purpose in getting to the climax of the movie, but wow a lot of it is just unpleasant scenes of some combination of the three characters yelling and screeching at each other.

Joe Mantegna I think? He did the voice for the Godfather audiobook I listened to and it was like Fat Tony was holding me in his arms and discussing his escapades

G2 > G1.

Part 1 for sure. The second film is just too bleak for me, it's just kind of a depressing watch, and without Brando or Caan there's just a certain energy and humor that is lacking.

I think my favorite scene in 2 is still the little conversation between Hagen and Pentangeli at the government compound.

G1: story of a young man who quits running and accepts the responsibility of taking care of his family, in the process learns that he has a natural affinity for it, and loses his humanity.

G2: Michael still a dickhead. Not even tom hagen recognizes him by the end. Interstitial segments with de niro. A lot of really memorable lines. IN MY HOME. IN MY BEDROOM WHERE MY WIFE SLEEPS.

G3: not particularly memorable or good but somehow it's just fun to watch. Almost campy.

1 is a drat good movie and is great on its own.

Yeah this part is key. G1 stands on its own in a way the others do not. Of course they had no way of knowing it would become a megablockbuster and icon of American cinema and spawn sequels at the time, but still.

Great movie, it's about real mobsters too. De Niro's character is based on a real guy, all the way down to the detail where he demands that every blueberry muffin at the casino contains exactly 10 blueberries, the person he's based on was also integral into the change from a seedy Vegas to a family friendly Vegas but they don't go into that at all in the film probably as an agreement with the mob
