Hmm, I'm feeling pretty torn on the EC now. I bought a MIJ Ibanez RG655M a few months back so that base is well covered now.

Might throw a lowball offer and see what happens, I'm not in the US so comparing prices is difficult against Reverb.

Anyway, I've figured they're buying things cheap on Yahoo or Mercari though Buyee, so I went and had a poke myself.

So, I'm the proud owner of this now:

An Aria Pro II RS-Wildcat - the single humbucker version is apparently rare. I think I'll end up paying about $150 AUD for the drat thing.

If nothing else, I can probably recoup the money by selling locally.

So an update with my Yahoo! Auctions Japan adventure.

For some reason, mailing stuff in (and to) Australia has a restriction on parcel length - 1.05m. You may note the standard length of a guitar and/or bass and see where this is going.
This limits postage to DHL or UPS, which is expensive - about $300-400 AUD per guitar.
You could get around this by removing the neck and packing into a smaller box, however Buyee doesn't want to undo 4 screws, so won't post like this.

After some panicking I found Blackship, which is a company related to Japan Rabbit, another proxy buying site. Happily, they will disassemble guitars for shipping, probably pack more than one together and get me cheaper shipping.
They explicitly said they currently do this for another Australian, who I suspect is either the eBay seller who inspired this in the first place, or there is a guitar store in Hobart that seems to specialise in Japanese guitars.

I'm still waiting to find out how much this is going to cost me, but seeing as the market for used guitars in Australia is pretty lean, I think I'll still come out with a relative bargain. I'm now also waiting on a Bacchus jazz bass:

a Source Audio envelope filter and an Aria ADT-2 pedal.

I'm finding there's a lot of interesting stuff that's fairly inexpensive. I've bid for Rickenbacker clones, there's a whole bunch of Matsumoku guitars from the 80's and a couple of brands that I haven't heard of before.

I've seen a few 'lawsuit' basses from the '70's - Greco and Tokai are pretty popular, and people seem to be looking out for them. Aria Pro seems to be undervalued. I nearly landed a 1976 Aria P bass copy for $200 but got sniped.

I've looked through the catalogues from the early/mid '80;s so many times, I'm now convinced black blue burst is the ultimate guitar finish and I'm starting to want to collect a set of the Aria Pro ii'ss in that colour:

Thanks for the update. I had a good look the other weekend but stuff still seemed a little expensive. Will keep looking.

The difference between a MIM and a MIA is a matter of miles. Unless you’re shelling out for some custom shop job, I don’t see any real reason to splurge when the MIMs play just as nicely.

As for MIJ… I know historically Japanese Fenders (and even Squiers) have been pretty highly revered. The sense I get from their modern offerings is that they’re still arguably as good or better than a MIA Fender, but they’re also getting weird with their poo poo. The color options alone are so wild and different, but you may also find some unique experimental features that you’d never find on a more “traditional” Fender guitar out of an American factory.

Yeah the used Japanese ones seem to go for a bit cheaper than a New Mexican one so I’ll aim for those.

What frustrates me is actually parsing this stuff out while listening. I have trouble counting, or if not actually the counting itself, understanding what's going on while I'm counting. I'm supposed to start taking lessons with this guy(Paul Ozz, you probably have seen him pop up before if you are into Aristides) in early November, and he says this is probably a thing to do with my adhd(I also have aural processing issues with other non musical stuff, like understanding people in noisy environments, understanding what's going in in audiobooks) and can be worked on. I'm sure he's right, I actually got better at listening to audiobooks at work, but I have no idea where to start with the music stuff since it's a bit more complicated than just understanding words. Hopefully he will help. So far anytime I want to play or record something, I'll either just play to and match the song by instinct, or if I'm recording, I just export the whole rear end guitar pro track I'm recording and play to the track, lol. If my only tools were a metronome or a drum beat I couldn't play poo poo, unless it was a very basic on beat type thing.

Also any tips until then? Should I take this guitar pro file, and just turn the click on with the track I'm learning and slow it down and just repeat it over and over and over for a bit and attempt to just internalize the whole thing?

e: Oh yeah I forgot, the signals guy on youtube has a rhythm course I started dicking with, maybe it will help but I haven't been dicking around with it too long. It's just 1/8th to whole note stuff right now. But like I said, it's not just counting, but actually parsing out what's going on in the songs I'm trying to learn. Maybe getting better at rhythm will still help that if I have to think less on that keeping time part.

When I first learned to play I pretty much learned off Guitar Pro. Now that I’ve been seeing a teacher and learning how to play to a click it’s like a whole different thing. Both have their place though but it’s quite easy to mask poor timing when playing to GP I feel. I find myself reading from the marker in GP rather than to the beat which means you’re probably out of time.

i've love to just play to the click, and I can for like a lot of normal exercises or really basic stuff. but I have no idea how I'd deal with something like this example I've posted about. I've gone back and listened to it, knowing what's going on, and it still doesn't sound obvious to my ear that main powerchord is actually starting an 1/8th note before the downbeat. hell, what if I didn't have guitar pro or you guys to ask? I don't think I would ever have figured it out. to me, it feels like, even if I know all the notes to what I want to play, I feel like it's impossible to use a metronome until I have the ability to fully parse and analyze in my head what I'm trying to learn. I feel like I have to overcome this really hard thing just to even start doing actual metronome practice. it's incredibly frustrating and I'm really hoping the lessons with this dude are going to help.

has anyone else ever had this issue? I'm mostly just hoping someone will confirm this is a normal thing that gets better once you get a real practice routine and/or teacher. the negative part of me is saying this has to do with my brain and I'll never be even slightly competent at this and another hobby will be ruined for me(my super high hour job ruined powerlifting for me because it's hard to recover or even feel good from working out when you work 60-70 hours a week)

I think this is normal and I think this is also my experience. Maybe I wasn’t too clear but I can play something to GP in about 5 mins but it’s really like 50-80% of actually playing it right and in time. Whereas if I played the same thing to a metronome it would take like 20x as long but hopefully be closer to 80% accurate when it comes to being in time.

But to even really know where to start with a metronome I need my teacher. It’s usually obvious once he explains how he would tackle a measure but it’s not something I can see initially at my level (read: bad).

When I was doing a lot of classical I would often practice new stuff at 60bpm and take FOUR ENTIRE CLICKS for each note. Not saying to do this, it's a bit excessive, but it can shine a light on all the tension that creeps in between the notes. I still think it's a good idea for practicing difficult chord shifts.

I still have mine to get rid of if anybody UK based wants one.

Also worth trying them with 250K pots as well as 500K as they're voiced to match with stock wiring and a Tele neck single. Actually that might be a valid complaint thinking about it - they can be a bit hard to balance with a neck single but not impossible.

Thanks.

This would be going in a Squier Contemporary Tele which has a humbucker in the neck and a Hot Rails style mini humbucker in the bridge. So I guess it would match ok?

It’s a sort of metal-esq designed guitar anyway so I assume the stock pickups are on the hot side already.
