Also a couple days ago my brain broke and I ended up spending like 4 or 5 hours wandering the city with a collective memory of about 15 minutes, all in a dreamy haze where reality wasn't real and everything was visually broken. But that's not the important part.

I ended up at a music shop and played the new Fender Meteora and EVH 5150 Iconic. The Iconic is really loving good, but the entire time I played it I was like "okay, but what does this do that my other high gain amps don't?" and I didn't have an answer.

The Meteora is pretty dang slick, it's light, it's very comfortable, and the satin neck is very nice. Neck was definitely chunkier than I expected tho, I was expecting something slimmer and more, I dunno, shreddy feeling? Just given that it has humbos, and is aimed at heavier stuff. I think that's the only thing that threw me, because most of my Fenders have pretty slim necks.

Oh, and the weird shape means it hates normal stands lol

The part I remember most tho is giving the guitar back to the guy and mentioning the jack AND switch are both a bit fucky and they might want to address that. He goes "oh it's just a bit dirty, it happens."
"Yeah, but it means someone picking up that $1800 guitar is gonna switch the pickups and get no loving sound, that isn't a good look for a sale."
Like goddamn, it's like having rusty strings and telling the customer "well you can swap them after." Just fix the loving thing before.

Actually all modellers and sims just turn up the gain knob and that usually does the trick.

Legitimately tho, it's one of those things were models and simulation have gotten disturbingly good, like reverb did decades before. And like reverb, most of the times models and sims will be absolutely fine and dandy and neither you nor anyone else will notice. And then there's times when you want the real thing, regardless of practicality.

Yeah, you can simulate things, but sometimes recording vocals in a literal bathroom makes the sound for the album. Sometimes an actual analog amp makes you feel something that gets the right vibe for that perfect take. There's no right or wrong, is the secret. There's practical concerns, there's questions of money and space and all that, but those flicker between person to person.

Yeah, for most people a good modelling amp or amp sim is the right choice. For some people they'll never be happy with it, whether because of particular tastes or, gently caress, just because they psychologically prefer a big ole toob amp and cab. And having a preference for a certain style doesn't make you wrong, at all. If you have the means and it will make you happier and fucken *practice* then do that. It's all relative, don't pretend your specific use case is the correct one, regardless of where you fall on the spectrum. And don't let anyone tell you that either.

But yeah, probably get a Katana.

Not only is the RAT the best pedal but the absolutely standard ProCo is probably one of the most reliable gets you can get.

I will say there is a RAT pinnacle in my opinion tho.

This bad boy here. I will forever endorse it. It's a RAT, volume, gain, and... tone and body? What the gently caress? Yeah, so basically body is the traditional RAT filter, shave off the high end. The tone pot tho, that's essentially a Big Muff tone knob, but with a much flatter EQ. The combination of the two means you can dial in those nasty and almost octave-ish Muff levels of treble, but then use the filter to take the icepick away. You're left with basically a really rad trebly fuzz at high gain.

Oh, it also has three clipping modes, a classic move. RATs are already incredibly versatile, but this thing adds even more. If I could only have one dirt pedal, out of all my dirt, it'd be this one.

And in opposite world I don't even know what pickups are in my guitars. The Fenders have Fender pickups, and the Gibson has Gibson P90s I guess.

Weirdly enough my OCD presents itself differently. In other aspects of my life it's by the book clinical OCD, but playing music is one of the few places where it seems to have no effect. I don't really think or plan, I just kind of do.

Given my life is relentless planning, backup planning, and making sure everyone is okay to a fault it's nice that music is my retreat from all that, and I just go "guitar feels good, amp gain high, me am play song BRRRRUNGGGG hurr distorty."

Honestly tho, tonechasing (within reason etc etc) is a pretty harmless obsession and at least gives you something to do when you're bored.

EQD makes amazing stuff, I fully recommend them. The Levitation is my favourite reverb right now, it's spooky psychedelic goodness. The Plumes is loving great and versatile as hell too.

On the topic of Weezer, I don't pay the most attention to them now (or before if I'm honest) but you're a fool if you think Thank God For Girls is not an absolute loving banger. Rivers can still write the gently caress out of a song. And the guitar tones on The White Album are to die for.

That's my Weezer input thanks for listening.

Hey guitar thread nerds, been a while. Hope everyone is going alright, and making them tunes.

I've been having a wild time and fun health stuff has lead me to sell some gear. My beloved Gibson Les Paul Classic? It's gonna go, along with a couple other items. Funnily enough, I'm not sad about it. The guitar is amazing, and there is nothing wrong with it at all, the problem is sadly with me. At like 7-8kg (16lbs roughly) it's a heavy bitch, but I love that. My physical health isn't good for it tho. Still plays amazingly and sounds as gorgeous as ever but the reality is I don't play it often, or even rarely at this point. It's in its case, with all the case candy, including the baby photo from the factory, and just sits there.

And well, that just don't sit well with me. So I decided to sell it, hopefully to someone who plays the gently caress out of it. Because what makes me sad isn't selling it, it's the idea of an amazing instrument collecting dust. And at the end of the day things are just things.

The other two items I'm selling are my Reverend Sensei 290 (in red aww ye) and my modified Fender Bassman 100T. Not because they're bad either. But because I forgot I even loving owned them and holy poo poo at that point they need to go. That's multiple thousands of aussie funbucks sitting around I forgot I even loving owned.

My perspective on gear the last few years has shifted, especially after losing my best friend and bandmate. I don't really much care for having gear after a certain point of getting stuff done. I've actually branched into piano and stuff instead of buying more guitar gear. And this is kind of how it all falls together.

I'm planning on getting another LP, by the way, just not a usual one. Keeping an eye out for one of the "awful" cut down ones, with the slim bodies and contours and whatnot. Because I love LPs but having a massive uncontoured chunk of wood just doesn't work for me any more.

This is my E/N about gear y'alll. Just play your instruments, because if it isn't helping create why is it even around?

Funnily enough that's pretty much the sort of thing I'm chasing. Just a Les Paul, but lighter. Not more aggressive or pointier, not hotter pickups, just like a modernised Les Paul (that isn't an SG).

Gibson made a Les Paul in 2015 called the Gibson Les Paul Less Plus (dumb rear end name) and it's pretty much exactly what I want, except I'd love gloss black.

I listed my Gibson locally for AU$3500 which is a fair price, and pretty normal for the model in that condition.

First response was "how about $1800 cash?" No bro, how about $3500 cash? At least go for $3000, $1800 is insultingly low, and clearly you think I'm either an addict, it's stolen, or I'm generally desperate.

I will also restate that while I'm selling my Gibson I am 100% getting another Les Paul. Les Pauls are amazing.

Probably getting a humbucker one this time I think. Play that through my JCM2000 clone. Pure rock.

Edit: If the Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy didn't have active pickups it'd be perfect, altho honestly I'm thinking of checking one out because I hear great things about Fishman pickups.

Musical E/N

Not the same setup obviously, but trans musician with complex PTSD here too. There's no golden bullet for it, sadly. It took years of therapy to be able to talk about it openly and even more to actually be willing to accept things happened at all.

Music was something that "wasn't for me". Our family weren't creative, or artistic, we just did the jobs that needed to be done, that was the mentality. I bought my own lovely Yamaha acoustic pack just out of high school partly out of spite, and partly because I could just do things for myself that no one else would.

Which is kind of why music is my escape, and also why I am not super amazing playing in group situations. I either want to just do everything myself (because people helping is bad actually for so many reasons) or to just be told what to do. But I've been able to express a lot of things through music that I could never just say.

I still find myself falling into old habits especially when working with others, and it's not a thing you just finish, but a constant, permanent thing you just learn to address.

You already know a pro is the way to go and I'm glad, but I will let you know that as you work things out you can actually start to take those feelings, memories, ingrained and trained habits, and twist them as you feel them, making them work for you, not fight you. And that's a powerful feeling :)

I sold my Gibson, and the dude ended up paying way less than it was worth because his wife stepped in and they got into an argument about his spending lol.

He ended up paying probably 2/3 to 3/4 of what I was asking for, and threw in a Valvestate 8100 head as well. I'm gonna shuffle that off with a bunch of other gear I'm not playing much, so they can get new homes.

Gonna get an Epiphone LP Prophecy when I can find one in the country, it's visually similar which I dig, and more importantly is an LP but contoured and chambered, which I really need these days. Also if I have a seizure while playing it I won't be sad I smashed a AU$4k guitar lol

Landgrabber, definitely get a Plumes, it's great and affordable (not affordable "relative" either!) and is a versatile drive pedal from clean to pseduo-distortion. Really nice, and if you pair it with another mid-gain drive it gives a thick distortion without a poo poo tonne of noise.

Also I finally have time to work on songs and my hosed shoulder is playing up again, so it won't be doing much for a while. The best part of your twenties is when other people permanently destroy your body, for no reason, even going so far as to apologise immediately after but the damage is done.

Any foot switch should but a heads up that if the connection is backwards you'll get "footswitch on" is first channel and "switch off" is second rather than the reverse. Not really an issue tho tbh. I went to a guitar shop once (which is now closed) looking at buying a Gibson LP, maybe a Traditional. Guy eagerly came over and started suggesting I look at Epiphones or maybe some Squiers (because they're much lighter you see).

When I told him I was looking at the Gibsons for a reason he tried to show me Zemaitis guitars they had and the only thing he was pitching at me was that they were "much prettier". One in particular looked like it was made of reflective bathroom tiles, like a tacky home renovation.

Anyway, I ended going to a good guitar place and buying my Gibson there (which is now gone) and they were much cooler about how they treat people in dresses.

If anyone releases an amp that meets the following please let me know:
- toobs
- if not toobs then just simple solid state
- analog controls (no Bluetooth or anything)
- not boutique or costing a billion dollars
- isn't just another clone

The last amp I got genuinely excited for was the Orange Super Crush and that doesn't even have tubes lol

I've reduced my amp collection to my Vox, Hiwatt and BlackStar S1. Sort of realised a lot of amps I had were variations of those themes and with the right cab or cabsim were redundant. The only one I really miss the sound of is the Bassman 100T but it was far too much for what I wanted, and if I see a more basic Fender head I will probably pick it up one day.

Vox, Hiwatt, Fender, Hi Gain. Pretty much sorts me, except that Orange I mentioned. Revv seems cool but fifty billion bucks, so nah.

After like a year of my gear collection going kaput slowly I'm at the point where I want to slowly rebuild. I still have my one amp, a Blackstar Series One 50W (it covers all the ground I need it to and I'm done tonechasing), my Torpedo Live for all my cabsim needs and my pedal board (I need a good solid delay tho). So I'm looking for suggestions.

My current guitars are literally the acoustic and electric guitars I started on, many, many years ago: a Yamaha F310P starter pack, and a Schecter SGR 006 (they stopped selling the 006 like the year it came out and I don't know if they even do SGR series guitars any more lol). Needless to say I could use a nice instrument again finally.

My restrictions are basically that I want something nice and well rounded that will handle whatever I throw at it. It has to be versatile because I'm restricting myself to one acoustic and one electric.

Acoustic-wise I am pretty sold on a Concert size, with a cutaway and electronics. I've been eyeing the Yamaha AC series, and the Taylor concert series. I'm not particularly wealthy right now so I'm not springing for top shelf stuff, I just want a reliable and comfortable concert guitar.

Electric guitar I'm chasing a Les Paul that isn't as inconveniently bulky as my Classic was. Been looking at the Epiphone Prophecy series since it's got the nice cutaways and has the sound versatility without being overly pointy and metal which is the unfortunate downside to a lot of "Les Paul but lighter" options.

I'm all ears for suggestions, and I'll be taking them to heart and playing the poo poo out of em all when I get a chance soon.

Also when you see a 100w metal amp that extra wattage is for the sake of headroom, you're not really expected to crank it full bore.

Yeah, while a lot of my playing would have honestly sufficed on 10-15W there were just times I was grateful to have a 50-100W head and 212 minimum. Not every situation is gonna be ideal, and some places just kind of suck for sound too, and there may be fancy ways to deal with it, or just brute force it which is often quicker and easier.

Some of his jokes and sensibilities irk me, but I just appreciate he was always up front about being paid, and honestly if you're watching review videos you're probably already interested in it, so just highlighting tiny things no one else mentions is neat.
