there's an online guitar shop that sells all sorts of parts and part guitar kits and the website looks like its straight out of web 1.0 but for the life of me I can't remember what its called and google isn't revealing it. They also sell relic'd partscasters as a boutique thing.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

My birthday came around and I got really high and decided that the way to get a hard tail strat with a maple fingerboard and Sienna burst colour was NOT to buy an ultra but instead impulse purchase a strat lead III in the right colour that came up on sale under $1k AUD and drop the proper noiseless pickups and locking tuners I am using on my joke Avocado-caster into it. Nothing could possibly go wrong. I have never bought a guitar sight unseen. This will be interesting. Pics when it arrives I guess.

Not high me has discovered that the lead does not in fact have a strat body, the lower horn is different. This means I cannot drop in my loaded strat pick guard even if the routing channels allowed it. So minimum a custom pick guard required.

lol.

edit:

a google check of the body sans pickguard shows that the middle pickup of a standard strat guard would not fit, so routing the body to accomodate it would be necessary.

double lol.

I cannot stress this enough; I was very, astronomically, sneering down on the artemis orbiter, high as gently caress when I hit that buy button.

Literally 3am on my birthday on reverb sudden discount found and bam; bought. Most expensive impulse high purchase so far.

I think the only thing I don't like is the black pickguard on the sienna burst, but I've already found a place that does a replacement white one and I have other white knobs/coil covers so I think I'd be ok with using. I'll probably faff around with it using its stock pickups to see what I like/don't like and then decide whether to keep and mod it or sell.

Carth Dookie

So custom pickguard recommendations for a sienna burst lead III? I don't care for the black one so I'm going to get a white one, but I've also found a bunch of other different styles:

https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=lead%20III%20pickguard&product_type=parts&category=pickguards&make=wd-music

Thread recommendations from that list? Plenty to choose from.

I think the eyeballs might be good but the red might clash if its red like the body but not the same kind of red

or maybe checkerboard and leave the knobs/pickup covers black.

Fender frontman 15G amp.

I've had this thing probably since the mid to late 2000s and it was my first amp. I hated it. It came with my Squier affinity stratocaster (which sucked. I think this is in one of squiers less good eras). I never seemed to be able to make the amp do what I wanted and didn't understand why, and didn't have the ability to search or get advice to solve it. I also discovered that I absolutely hate tone hunting by trial and error. It probably contributed to me giving up on guitar for about 15 years until I came back a couple of years ago and picked up an acoustic.

I've experimented with electrics but it's only really recently that I've kind of clicked as to how to actually use an amp kinda properly to make it sound like I want. As a result of that I've come back to this amp and matched it with my fender lead III and it sounds... good. Surprisingly good. I've come to appreciate the simplicity of the amp now as I have it mostly dialled in to do what I want. I have a clean and driven setup and can flick between the 2 and I know what to do on the guitar to get the tone I want. Not bad for an amp I decided was a POS starter amp and now I'm glad I kept it. The nice thing is that it also taught me enough that I can go back to my Katana and intelligently mess with it and now have a better chance of finding what I want instead of relying on downloaded patches.

Good day all round I guess.

I don't think I'd have another LP because I don't think an LP style guitar is for me.

But if I did, it'd be this one:

Sire L7 P90 in Tobacco Sunburst.

same rolled fingerboard edge as all their other guitars. Locking Tuners, heel cut for high fret access and the biggest benefit; a SATIN neck (I don't do gloss necks - too sticky).

Asking price? Around $1200 of my local currency. The cheapest Les Paul Gibson I can get new? $1900 for A Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute P90. But that doesn't have the same Les Paul body, it just has a flat body, no curved top. Call me cynical, but I see it as a Les Paul sillouhette object with a Gibson badge on it. A closer comparison IMO is a Gibson Modern Les Paul tribute starts at $2300 and goes up very rapidly from there. It does come with nitro lacquer paint though, if that's your thing (it is not my thing).

I freely admit I'm biased against Gibsons though.

So uh. My sire arrived:

and I'm absolutely losing my mind over it.

"soft" case that it came with. Its semi-rigid, almost on par with Taylor's semi-rigid "soft" accoustic cases. My American Fender gig bag that my Tele came in is not as good.

excuse the cat head.

The neck is absurd. I have never, on any guitar, in any price range, including top end Fenders, seen fretwork this nice. The abalone inlay dots are gorgeous, well coloured and distinct. They can't possibly be real abalone Also the neck is actually FLAMED maple in my example. The rounded off edges are perfect. Rolled, but not so rolled you think you have a different fretboard radius, or are worried about dragging the 1st string down off the fret wire while playing. The fret ends all the way to the very end... are perfect. THEY ROLLED THE FRET EDGES ON THE TOP OVER THE BODY FOR GODS SAKE. :psyboom:

The profile is VERY similar to my Telecaster. I'd say its ever so slightly thicker in the middle of it so it feels ever so slightly more meaty and rounded than my Tele. I like it. A lot.

The action? perfect. Low without buzzing all the way down the fretboard. I mean the drat thing was almost entirely in tune except the high E when I pulled it out of the case.

The nut. :cumpolice:

The locking tuners. The tuning machines are smooth as butter. I hate tuning guitars with trem systems, but this is just... great. I thought this would be one point where it would fall down and annoy me but it just doesn't. Maybe I'll actually put the trem arm in and go hog wild on it now.

Body is great. Binding is great.

So, weak points. I have discovered 2 tiny blemishes (that you can't see unless you go over it with a macro lens/magnifying glass):

Can you see it?

The tiniest of scuffs on the tip of the headstock. Possible shipping/moving ding. I can't see it unless I get right up there on it.

See it?

The absolute tiniest of overspray on the binding down near the jack.

Other parts that MIGHT be a bit of a let down, depending on opinion:

The flame down on the body isn't a huge zebra stripe. Maybe some people would prefer a more defined stripiness. Personally I think it looks great in the context of the entire guitar. Also the cream pickup covers and knobs might not be to everyone's taste. More crisp white ones might suit the pick guard better.

So how does it play?

Brilliant. Can't really get around it. With a neck that good its impossible for it not to. How does it sound? Check out Andertons or Darrel Braun if you want a sound demo - I suck and won't do it justice with my un-tuned Katana. However even with my fists of ham and coordination of a concussed duck I think it sounds excellent. The bridge pickup in particular is SPICY in a way I hadn't expected. If I had to describe it, I'd call it a Fender, but fatter in tone in general across all pickups. I really, really like it. Like; its very likely that I'm selling all my other electrics except the Ormsby (because its a weird multiscale thing), its so good.

Now lets talk some of the UNDOCUMENTED EXTRA FEATURES. Check it:

https://sire-usa.com/collections/electric-guitars/products/larry-carlton-s7-fm?variant=34034064654474

That's the main page for Sire guitars USA. Check out the specs section. I have found 2 features on the guitar that aren't mentioned, and should be because on any other brand they'd be touted as premium features.

First; it says it has locking tuners. What it does NOT mention, is that those tuners have staggered posts so that's why you don't need the string tree:

I was kinda stunned when I saw that. I mean, I suspect it might because I couldn't see the tree in any pictures, but still, didn't KNOW until I had it my hands. Amazing.

The other thing:

The "tone" knob is actually a push-push button that splits the humbucker. It has coil splitting. It isn't mentioned in the specs at all. It sounds great. :cripes:

This thing set me back $1200AUD.

Overall score:

Features: 10.

Unbeatable features at this price point, or frankly, one 2-3x the price.

Neck: 9.9

0.1 off for the headstock scuff. Otherwise its just brilliant.

Body: 9.8

0.2 off for the tiny overspray. Others might think the flame a little weak and deduct for that but I am fine with it.

Playability: 10.

Action was perfect and it was almost completely in tune out of the box.

Sound: ?

I'm leaving this one until I dive deeper and try a bunch of different things, but call it tentatively a 9. I expect it to climb if its as much of an all rounder as I want it to be (and I think it will be).

Guys. Guys. Seriously. Go get a Sire in your flavour - T, S, Les Paul, 335, whatever. Just get one. Before capitalism ruins everything and they double the price. Its just so fricking good. I don't think I'll ever get rid of this one. I can't imagine getting anything better at any price I'd be prepared to pay.

That's fair. If you want to support American or a local then that's a different priority.

OK further Sire musings:

Found another "downside." - its on the heavy side, given how many body scoops it has, which is quite surprising when you pick it up. Most Fender strats i've picked up have been a little lighter on average imo.

updating on the sound; it sounds really good even through my old fender frontman 15G. All the positions are usable and most of them sound really good. I also feel like I have more control over the tone in selection/amp setup but also just by playing a certain way.

Tuning seems to be holding well so i'm going to be brave and play with the trem for a bit tomorrow.

I decided to restring my Sire because although the strings on it I had already were fine Ernie balls, I prefer elixirs. I also wanted the excuse to get under the pick guard and check out the guts:

Very tidy inside. Clean enough to eat your dinner off.

Nice quality wires with cloth covers which is cool. Full size pots. All the good stuff.

Interesting that the middle and neck single coils are labelled differently, which suggests it might not be wired the same. Pretty sure the pole positions are different on them but I can't be arsed to get up and check and I don't have a multimeter to be sure.

lots of room if I decided I wanted to change the pickups for some reason (I don't; I actually like the Sire made ones).

As far as the restringing goes - easiest restring I've ever done on a trem'd guitar. Tuning stability is great. Very happy so far.

For electric guitars the difference may be minimal in terms of sound. But I still prefer the "feel" of elixirs over most other strings and they last ages so that's what I use.

Totally different story for acoustic. They definitely change the nuance of the sound and it can be quite significant. To the point where I love what Daddario XS do for my Taylor 324 but don't like how almost overpowering the treble strings become with those strings on my Yamaha LS26.

I don't think so, at the very least you might get a feel for how little pressure is required, assuming that this is an exercise only.

I think its quite a common problem, and it feels quite counter intuitive to me to be so light with something that can sound so aggressive, but when I'm sounding a bit off, the first step in my diagnosis before I think about string age or intonation or anything is "am I getting tense and gripping the guitar?"

Posture check too. When I'm struggling and death gripping the neck I stop and think about my posture. Chances are I'm curled up like a prawn over the neck trying to will my fingers to do what I want. I KNOW how little pressure is required and I know that I can sit upright, shoulders completely relaxed and without tension and still be able to hold barre chords on a steel string acoustic. Focussing on just sitting up straight and shoulders relaxed tends to just free up the tension in my hands as well.
