I asked this in the computer-toucher chair thread, but figured this might be a good place to ask as well - do any of you have a recommendation for a nice office chair that also works while you're playing guitar (i.e. the armrests can be moved completely out of the way)?

The lovely Amazon special drafting chair I've had for years now does that really well, but it's poo poo at being a chair that I should be siting in for as many hours as I do, so it's time to get a nice office chair, but I'd like to not need to also keep my drafting chair or another stool around for guitar time.

All of the fancy Herman Miller chairs either look like the armrests only go up and down and may not be "out of the way" enough in the most downward setting to be comfortable playing guitar in, or it's just impossible to tell if you can swing the armrests away from the chair from the videos on their website. I'm not hung up on getting a HM chair at all, just using them as an example.

Anyone here have something they love that works well for both businessing and guitaring?

I did this hunt a few years ago and chanced a Steelcase Gesture - the arms do not move enough to use the backrest during play and I find it uncomfortable to have to sit further forward on the cushion. I think if I played in classical position I wouldn't have this issue. I kept it because for office stuff it's incredible and I liked it more than the Aerons and Leaps I'd had at jobs in the past.

I upgraded from an old Ikea Markus, so I ended up taking the arms off of that and using it as a music chair. For that purpose it works great, but it doesn't really compare to Herman Miller/Steelcase/etc ergonomically.

I have an American Tele that I got off of Sweetwater and an American Strat from Reverb and they're both fantastic, well-sorted guitars that sound and feel a little nicer than the Squier/Mexican equivalents I've played. The handful of Squier Classic Vibes and Contemporaries I've touched have been pretty well-sorted, as well as the PRS SEs.

I had a used PRS S2 McCarty that was a dealer special order so it had an ebony board and a stunning quilted maple top. It was probably the best guitar from a factory fit and finish standpoint I've ever played, but it was very dark sounding guitar and I did not get along with the pattern vintage neck at all. Wanted something to sit between the Tele and my super strats for classic rock/hard rock sounds, but it honestly sounded best downtuned as a doom metal guitar. Ended up selling it and I'm still kind of hunting for the Les Paulish guitar I end up bonding with. The closest thing was an Edwards Explorer copy with a JB/59 combo that was pretty great, but the Explorer shape didn't really get along with my bum right shoulder.

I think the tl;dr is that any mass-produced item made of wood is going to have some studs and some duds, but I'd hazard PRS is more up with QC than Fender.

I sometimes look at getting a Tone King for the built-in attenuator and building a pedalboard to use with it and I think the Tone Master would accomplish something similar for less money and being less backbreaking. Definitely curious how it sounds in the room.

I'd try out a Friedman BE-OD (Joyo Uzi is supposedly a clone if you want to do it for cheap) or an MXR 5150 OD for that purpose, but I've got a THR30 II also and I got a pretty good thrash sound out of it with just the built-in amps/cabs.

I did a little googling around because I'm always interested in different import stuff and found a blog post that said those Deans are made in Korea by Samick or Cort, and found some old listings for much less than that 450 asking price. I still use the JustinGuitar way of learning chords years later whenever I have to pick up a new chord shape/change/whatever:

- Spend several minutes practicing getting into the chord shape without a rhythm. I usually touch my leg, then fret the chord, then pick through each string to make sure the strings that are supposed to be ringing are ringing correctly and the muted strings are muted correctly. Repeat for a few minutes.
- Change between two chords (one being the one I'm learning) as fast as possible in a 1 minute period, counting the number of changes I make. Track this, it's satisfying seeing it go up.
- Pick some songs using the chords you're learning and learn to play them. Make them simpler if necessary - if you're just starting out you might be playing simple songs at slower tempos with whole-note strums for a bit until you get all the strumming and chord changes working together. This is okay.

This stuff gets easier with time. Then you'll go to learn barre chords (probably the F chord to start) and that's the next wall.

I'm currently running my Washburn through a Fender Mustang Micro, and while it's great I think I'm missing the full experience of playing with an amp. I'm therefore looking for a small amp suitable for a beginner in a loft room. Problem is there's a huge range to pick from, I don't have the experience to know what's good or not and tons of reviews aren't unbiased so not much help there. Budget is up to £125ish. I don't currently play any particular type of music as I'm still doing very basic stuff, but eventually would like to play prog, rock and metal.

There are 15-20w solid state/modeling amp combos from Fender/Peavey/Roland/etc for around that price that will sound decent-ish at certain things and bad at others, depending on the amp. If you're getting anything cheaper than a Boss Katana 50 or similar (which is apparently 235 pounds) I'd probably want to listen to it in a store and make sure you like the sounds you get out of it. I had one of the old Peavey Vypyrs as a practice amp and it had a serviceable metal tone and was pretty rough with cleans/crunch. If you're able to stretch for the Katana or can find one used on a deal, I'd highly consider that.

A more unorthodox option would be to do amp plugins on your computer. If you're technologically inclined you could get an audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and use it with existing speakers/free guitar plugins. The plugins you can find for free are going to sound better than a 125 pound amp and you'd have the start of a good upgrade path to a pretty sick recording setup.

Thanks both. Plugging into my PC or other existing speaker is sadly not an option. I could stretch to a Katana 50 or HB Tube 15 but worry they are overkill for my usage. I'll set up an eBay search for them. As it happens I went to my local second hand shop today and looked at the amps and it was a ropey selection of knackered old things or huge stacks.

The Katana can reduce its wattage output to half a watt which really helps it stay at conversation level volumes if needed. I think the LT25 would probably be pretty good also.

I've also had thoughts of putting together a weird tele/strat hybrid. The strat body is more comfortable but I prefer the simplicity of the tele bridge and love the tele bridge pickup.

At some point I was eyeballing a G&L special order in a crazy lime green hot rod color as they'll do an ASAT with body bevels and I think they had a Nashville-style pickup setup, but I'm pretty attached to my Fender tele and didn't want to drop the cash on it.

I play 9s because they're more pleasant to do bends with, and the downtuned or shorter scale guitars get an easily available equivalent that tries to approximate the tension of 9s.

My one acoustic is a Taylor GTe Blacktop, which has a 24.1 inch scale length and comes with 12s with the stated goal of trying to feel like a standard acoustic in E Flat. It is a wildly comfortable playing experience and I love the way walnut sounds so it's probably the guitar I'm second-least likely to get rid of behind the Telecaster.

I used to do regular Ernie Balls but I feel like they break more compared to D'Addarios so I switched. NYXLs are also a little nicer/brighter sounding and (more importantly) last WAY longer which lets me be lazier about string changes, which is a win. Not sure if it comes out to break even compared to normal strings over time but eh.

Thicker picks are way way better for leads and fast rhythm lines. I switched to 1.5mm a while ago and can't believe I used to use anything thinner. You can get a lot more precise with an inflexible pick brushing over the strings than trying to force a thinner pick through the strings.

That said, there's some ridiculous picks out there. I was testing out some gear I was getting from a guy on craigslist and asked if he had a pick I could use. He handed me a chunk of plastic as big as my thumb and easily a half inch thick or more and I was like wtf am i supposed to do with this my guy

I've tried picks at 2 and 3mm and I wasn't fond of the way it changed how gripping the pick feels. Somewhere between 1 and 1.5mm is my happy medium for fast rhythm/metal, I think - you get the stability of the thicker pick without changing how you engage with picking.

Since you're only complaining about the sixth string I'm guessing your fretting technique is fine.

If you've got the cash, pay a luthier for a setup so you can get a baseline for what a good setup feels like, then start learning about how to tweak the different aspects of your guitar's bridge and neck so you can make these adjustments in the future.

I've had a bunch of instances where I just caved to the latter and they just live on a rack now or got flipped on Reverb. I grab my ESP M-II or Telecaster the vast majority of the time I play guitar, especially with the transposing knob on Archetype Petrucci making it easy to play metal songs in different tunings. I like having an acoustic, a seven, and a bass around, but I've got like other superstrats/a strat/etc I barely touch and I think I could get rid of all of those and get a nice SG or LP for classic rock stuff and be set.

I don't think it'd lead to issues - I personally can adjust scale lengths between 24 and 25.5 inches pretty automatically and it's not until I get to 23.5 inch guitars like a GS Mini where I start to feel a little cramped.

That said, I honestly don't think it'd be useful to get another electric with a shorter scale length as like, a training wheels guitar or something, unless I had some significant external factor like a hand injury where the size and string tension differences would have a serious benefit. There is an element of kind of training your hands to acclimate to guitar - callouses, barre chord technique, etc - that everyone goes through and you just have to grin and bear it.

I googled that Washburn and it looks like it has a Floyd Rose bridge, which is going to make it somewhat harder to change strings and also limit your ability to mess with different tunings as easily as a hardtail. This might be kind of annoying if you're new and if you really wanted a different guitar that's another factor I'd consider.

Southern Cassowary

I've been doing some more reading on guitars and browsing various shops online and I'm 99% decided I want to park my Washburn for the time being and get something with a hard tail and maybe a slightly smaller scale than the MG74. I'm a bit paralysed by how many guitars are out there that look cool and review well, but my budget is around £400 and I have 2 top options at the moment, a PRS 245 Standard or a Harley Benton SC Custom Plus. They're the same price, although the PRS comes with a quality gig bag too. Scales are 24.5 vs 24.75, so pretty similar. The PRS has a slightly thicker neck but only by a couple of mm. There's no chance to try either in person, but both can be returned within 30 days. It's hard to look past the PRS on the headstock, but the HB is (more) beautiful imo.

vs

I'd go Harley Benton because neck thickness bothers me more than scale length - didn't get on with a PRS S2 because of a Pattern Vintage neck. I've only played the old school EMG 81/85 set and I wasn't a fan but I'd be willing to bet those EMGs sound better than most of the off-the-shelf pickups you find in guitars at that price point, and if you disliked them you could probably rip them out, sell them, and pick up a set of Duncans or whatever and come out close to even.
