The Dr. Robert is pretty darn amazing (it should be for the price). It's the Beatles in a box, and it makes sense why a lot of cover bands use it. I love that era of the Beatles, so it's a lot of fun to jam along and actually sound like the song. This is my first compressor, and I have no idea how to use it well yet, but it's really cool getting oodles of sustain in a way I've never been able to before. I'm thinking I'll treat the Dr. Robert almost like a fuzz into the compressor, then into a Klone, but I have no idea until I try a bunch of permutations. I have lots of goofing around to do this weekend.

I'm on vacation and reading a bunch and catching up on interviews and new albums. I just found out that Andy Summers doesn't really care for teles any longer and he considers the strat a perfect guitar. Obviously people should play whatever they like and tastes change - but, I'm a huge Andy Summers fan so it's a little sad to me, because his tele is iconic. Then I read that Porcupine Tree released a new album just a month or two back! And Steven Wilson has a new favorite guitar that is gorgeous: Steven Wilson posted:And I say this only partly tongue in cheek because it is partly true, it's the only guitar that I've ever truly loved. Because I always thought of guitars as tools… until I got this one. This is a guitar I can genuinely say I have some kind of attachment too. It feels like a treasure to me in a way that my other guitars didn't. Sorry, all the other guitars I've played but this is special.

Dr. Faustus posted:The big neck-through hollowbody is going to resonate and you will hear that in the amped guitar's output. It could obscure your attack and affect your sustain a little, but luckily Knopfler's tone is already really really compressed and dark, so I can't say just how much you will notice it. The short answer to your question is "reasonably close." The more similar the pickups are the closer you will get. I've heard several people say that an LP sounds like a compressed 335. Does that mean running a 335 through a compressor gets you part of the way there? The pickups I'd put in a 335 are Wolfetone's Marshallhead and Dr. Vintage, which are basically designed to be what Page used circa '72 when he got that hot bridge replacement.

I'm allowing myself some GAS as a treat because I start lessons tomorrow. After trying my dad's Washburn 335-like, I really want a Gibson ES-335 but I'm not paying $3000 for one. I also learned there's no way in hell I could ever switch to righty. I can't even play a D chord without muting multiple strings even after a few days of trying. Debating trying to build one vs waiting for this year's Epiphones to come out and basically replacing everything. I'd love to find a used Casino or Sheraton II or something but curse the southpaw market for being so limited!

This was a hard rock/metal band, so it seemed weird until I realised that that's how upside down power chords look. The guitar was a leftie, but strung as a rightie. I guess he learned to play that way? This is like the worst possible combo.. why?

I finally finished my first build-your-own pedal, a Klon clone - and it doesn't work. This is totally deflating after days of delays, hours of work, and a few finger burns. Tomorrow I'll hit the builder forums and see if anyone can help my understand why the voltages on my ICs are so different.

Anyone able to help chase down some tone? The "dreamy" clean tone in the intro and continuing on into the first verse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ONcyaZazxg My naive ear still sucks a bit at distinguishing types of delay and types of reverb, and I think this is about the time period he was using rack-mounted fx so no easy "he used these pedals". Is this a hall reverb going into an analog delay? Or some other modulation? I'm not really getting close with my amp (Yamaha THR30ii), and thinking about picking up a reverb and/or a delay to start experimenting and working towards this tone. Which effect would be a good first supplement to the limited delay and modulation on my amp? luchadornado fucked around with this message at 02:58 on Aug 14, 2022 |

NGD (and the first time I hooked up a pedal chain): I wanted an echo-sounding delay with some extra fun, and the Keeley Eccos was a very good price used. And by "used", I think the seller meant "someone opened the box and looked at it once". I've mainly been getting normal sounds out of it, but every once in awhile I'll play with it and coax some more extreme flanger-tinged delays/loops out of it. I also got the 1 spot that allows them all to be plugged in. After 20+ hours of troubleshooting, buying new parts, researching and learning, I finally figured out what was wrong with the Klon clone I've been building (the silver, unmarked box). It sounds great, but I need to keep playing around with it and the Dr Robert to see what order I like them in.

Two questions: As you're figuring out other people's songs - how do you tell which chord voicing to use? I'm learning Pearl Jam's Alive and the acoustic part for the verse is essentially just A and Gadd9 strummed. My guitar teacher showed me one way that is also how it was done on MTV unplugged. The official tab book has another way. The "official" ultimate guitar tab has yet another way. Also, thinking about that A in Alive - it's much easier to bar with your first finger on the 2nd fret and just not let that high open E ring out. How do you begin thinking about, not just for playing others' songs but your own, when it's "ok" to drop notes from a chord?

Rivers' approach with the Catalog of Riffs and some of the algorithms and programs he's written are really interesting, but the output reminds me of when people were all excited about a fish playing Pokemon - randomly stumbling across a minor success with no way to grow from there. I wonder how much of the interesting stuff landgrabber posted was intentional and how much was happenstance.

I'm sorry, landgrabber - I know Weezer is your jam. I'm wondering out loud on why I've 180'd on them harder than pretty much any other band, because I used to adore them. Algorithms or not, Rivers will undoubtedly accomplish more musically than I ever will. Having actually done data science, machine learning, and all sorts of heuristics professionally over the years I have a personal belief that intuition has an organic beauty that is yet to be captured by machines - that may account for some of that 180. The timeline certainly lines up.

Their show I saw in 2006 is in my bottom tier of live shows I've ever seen. I'm a dude, and my warmup/trying out instruments routine is usually something like Bring on the Night, Blackbird, Black, etc. All those are rather melodic and and interesting in my mind. I personally didn't think it was worth it because the biggest difference is the pickups, and I didn't like the stock pickups in either model. If you like the pickups - the fretboard, tuners, etc. are nicer and then it's worth it. But at $1100 new there are a lot of other guitars that would also be really nice. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a good deal on either though.
