Binged The Curse over a couple of days a few days ago so I've had some time to stew on it and read through the thread. Got some more appreciation for the finale thanks to that, 'cause I didn't much care for it at first (besides the amazing cooking show bit)
Still not a fan of the big turn, but on the whole I'm glad that I watched the show, enjoyed and "enjoyed" it a lot. Definitely read like a comedy to me FWIW, like sure there's a ton of dramatic tension but it's played for laughs or to point out the ridiculousness of the character and situations. Although maybe it's kind of the "every game is an RPG" effect.

Anyway, I've been rewatching Twin Peaks have to share this shot of Nadine staring at her shoes:

I am really glad I got to watch it week to week. As much as I love a good binge watch I think shows like The Curse are way better when you've gotten time to really let it stew and think about what's going to happen the next week.

This kind of criticism is hilarious to me because it means absolutely nothing other than "This thing thinks it's smart, but it's not. I'm smarter. I'm smarter because reasons"

You said a show that is basically rapid social commentary has nothing to say. Then when someone gives you examples of how that is objectively wrong, it actually does have something to say, but it's "too easy". When they contradict your complaint about it not being arty (lol) it actually is but not arty enough.

Allright man, tell me why. Give me literally anything other than complaints that are so broad that they could mean literally anything and maybe I can get your angle more. Give me some examples of things that you find more sufficient etc.

My take on the ending is that it's a lot simpler than people want to believe. Keep in mind it's so open to interpretation that I do not think anything about my take is objectively "right". I think the ending being so open is what is making it or breaking it for people and I don't think there is a true right or wrong answer in this case, but this is how I felt about it. I do think people are looking for a metaphor that might just not be there though.

I think he was just in fact, cursed and the ending was the result of the curse. The entire show revolves around Ashur thinking he is cursed and the viewer assuming he was just losing his mind. But no, he was cursed and it ultimately killed him. That's the big reveal. The second Dougie shows up to the scene he starts dropping the most reddit rear end takes about the situation in real time "he's trying to run away from commitment". It's just a completely moronic take on the situation and felt like preemptive jab at the internet discourse that would inevitably surround the ending. Both Fielder and Safdie are notorious trolls and imo it's pretty on brand for them to make an ending that would drive people nuts. On paper, the show basically resolves all of it's most surface level themes. They figure out how to salvage their failing marriage, albeit in a bizzare and toxic way. The ultimate question about the curse is answered. Not only is it answered, but it's addressed with shocking spectacle. If you look at the show on the most basic level, it delivers in a pretty blunt way.

Even if I don't 100% "get" the ending I'm ok with it. I don't really see it as a puzzle to solve. I liked it because it was fun to watch. It was weird and entertaining. It was funny and haunting and impressive to look at. it made me think about it. To me that's a good ending.

Throughout the show multiple times, characters make references to things like Asher's "world turning upside down" so I didn't think the ending particularly came out of the blue, it seems like a fairly straightforward conclusion to all of those references. The thing they were all alluding to just literally happened. In particular a lot of them were about how Asher's world would turn upside down if Whitney left him or didn't need him, which is presumably what would happen following her having a baby - she'd spend all of her time and energy on the baby and Asher wouldn't get any attention, which he would be too emotionally immature to see as anything beyond his loss of positive reinforcement. It was established several times that he doesn't really help anyone with anything beyond providing financial backing, which would presumably be the case with him raising a child too, and he wouldn't really have a place in the family - causing his world to turn upside down, because he hinged his entire self worth on having an attractive wife who was beholden to him.

Also this is entirely meaningless to anyone but me, but I had to lol because one of the cameramen in one episode is played by someone I used to hang out with in high school - I had no idea he was in this or even worked in film these days so it was pretty funny going from "that guy looks familiar" to "oh poo poo his name is in the credits"

This was my conclusion too, and I wonder if it was colored by my own experiences in parenting/marriage.

he thought quoting borges would make him popular
That's part of it, but I think it's also that Asher just doesn't have any mooring or connection to anything in the world. For example, look how readily he throws over the casino where he'd happily participated in finding new, horrible ways to steal money from people, or how he treated prospective buyers, or how he even had to carefully study tips for how to be "naturally funny". Asher is empty, hollow, weightless, and the illusion of his marriage was the last thread keeping him in place.

Absolutely, the soundtrack was one of my favorite things about the show. A little biased because I love electronic music and am a huge OPN fan, but it’s so refreshing to hear this kind of music score a strange show like this. I never heard anything by John Medeski before this and immediately became a fan!

I turned around on this show when I realised it was a sequel to Neon Genesis Evangelion set in an alternate future where Shinji and Asuka were middle-aged and had got married.

Basically I want a cut of the finale where Komm, süsser Tod starts playing once the branch is cut.

Seriously though, I wonder how much of this is autobiographical? One of the only things we know about Nathan is that he got divorced recently - I don’t think it’s a stretch to imagine that Asher and Whitney’s relationship is an exaggerated version of Nathan and his ex-wife’s. Both Nathan and Asher produce and star in what, from a production standpoint, are both essentially reality TV shows. Maybe the anti-gravity is an interpretation of Nathan feeling like he was literally yeeted from the marriage.

I don’t think they should make a second season of the curse. even an anthology format would diminish the impact of the show.

I was surprised that the rehearsal is getting a s2 given how s1 ended (“life’s better with surprises…”) but the show’s format lends itself well to nathan’s whole thing about television blurring the line between reality and fiction and it’s probably incredibly fun and satisfying to spend HBO money
