Mad that there's a jazz icon in this forum but no thread that I can see for America's only genuinely worthwhile gift to the world.

A lot of people get put off by jazz for the same reasons as classical: it's seemingly impossible to work out where to 'start', and there's always going to be some 90 year old grandad somewhere who says that unless you've listened to Bud 'Trombone' Jefferson and His Band live at the Starlite Lounge in Algiers in 1936 (of which there is only one recording and it costs $90,000) you're a no-good poser.

I've been listening to jazz since I was about 15 or 16 years old and they played Herbie Hancock's Chameleon in full on the radio one night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbkqE4fpvdI hell yeah

Straight away there'll be some purists who will say that this isn't strictly jazz, you know. We're not about that in this thread. This thread is for:

-Jazz
-Acid Jazz
-Bebop
-Hard Bop
-Cool Jazz
-Soul Jazz
-Nu Jazz
-Contemporary Jazz
-Dixieland Jazz
-Jazz Funk
-Jazz Fusion
-The approximately 40 other types of jazz I haven't mentioned

If it's jazz, it's here, is what I'm going for.

Best advice I can give for someone looking to get into jazz is just start anywhere, see what kind of sounds you like, look up which musicians were making those sounds and then see what else they worked on. Go onto google and type in 'google give me some absolute jazz stompers' and you'll probably get something like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__OSyznVDOY

And then you have officially Listened to Jazz. Search on ebay for a slightly used double bass and post 'yeah I listen to jazz nbd'

When I started working from home during the pandemic and didn't have to make calls I put together a spreadsheet of every Blue Note Records release, and every day picked one at random and made note of the albums and tracks I liked.

I am by no means a jazz expert though so don't want to do like a lot of these types of threads and have the OP be 'check out my 9000 youtube links that mean nothing to you'. If you would like recommendations you should post in this thread and I can try and help or one of the aforementioned grandads above can swing by to give you a real education. If you heard a real groovy banger recently you should post it in here so I can listen to it and post 'nice, drat nice'. Post your weirdest time signatures and filthiest sax solos. Can you remember the guy who played the saxophone that was like a double saxophone because I listened to a whole one of his albums and I didn't like it but appreciated the effort, and I can't remember his name.

Jazz - it's where it's at.

I am listening to this album because ECM put out a few really important modern/postmodern classical releases and hell I like the brand.

I will not have anything worthwhile to say other than "wow! cool music" because I know basically nothing about jazz performance practices sorry

Does anyone have a good breakdown of Brazillian jazz? There's a couple shows on the local college station that play a lot of it but I have a really hard time finding anything other than Bossa Nova or like Gilberto Gil and no complaints but I'd also like to listen to some of the brighter, more up tempo ensemble stuff especially w/ multiple singers. no idea what I'm looking for

Actually I've been having that problem a lot in general. Is there a good resource for finding standards you don't know the name of? There are a couple tunes that I hear pretty regularly from different groups on the radio, but can never place after the fact. Sometimes the track ID helps but usually its broken lol

this was one of those for me for a while:

Master of the high hat!
Oh awesome, I had also been wondering why there's no jazz thread and was seriously considering spinning one up. Thanks for making this OP

Here's a few recommendations:

Live from Emmet's place is an awesome stream/YT/etc. led by Emmet Cohen, who brings on some awesome artists both obscure and internationally renown to play standards. I think it was first started during the beginning of COVID and quickly took off. You can pretty much click on any performance and it's guaranteed to be awesome. This is one of my favorites, which I think is also their most popular video, featuring the incredible Patrick Bartley with one of my all time favorite modern alto sax solos. I've probably watched this more than a dozen times at this point:

Emmet Cohen w/ Bruce Harris & Patrick Bartley | After You've Gone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=984ksjle4YA

Another popular thing: Lingus by Snarky Puppy, this has one of the coolest keyboard solos in the last few decades, very much worth watching for the insane musicianship from all involved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_XJ_s5IsQc

In terms of more classic records, here are a few albums that are required listening IMO, mostly just hard bop stuff:

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDqULFUg6CY

John Coltrane - Giant Steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy_fxxj1mMY

Hank Mobley - Soul Station: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLg7mJ3BwdABJB42JDMr1ueIe8viY5FgC8

Bill Evans - Portrait in Jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gByn-Orq9l8

There's so so much more out there to share but I think these link are all good starting points for anyone who might not be super familiar with jazz

I've started trying to "get into" jazz in parallel with learning piano. I don't "get it" by jazzhead standards but I'm enjoying it.

Things I'm liking right now:
Bill Evans, all of it basically
Miles Davis - everything again, but especially Sketches of Spain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38zRx9AYDHQ
Chick Corea and Return to Forever - Light as a Feather https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbynfCYDfuI
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6NRfitSCxw&t=455s
Sarah Vaughan - Live at Birdland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t174pooeiG0
T-SQUARE - Blue in Red https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQuD3rN1Y44 (heavy nostalgia for the N64 generation)

This is the jazz album that I find myself listening to front-to-back most often. This is also one of a series of albums where Peterson plays songs from composers in the Great American Songbook, all with the same style of paintings as the cover. There's another, similar series of Peterson albums that cover the same or similar composers, all with a cover of the silhouette of a man playing a piano, but the sound quality in modern platforms is much lower.

Also a big fan of Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder, but I find that one harder to have playing in the background while I'm working on something.
