After reading this thread I realised I hadn't particularly listened to any Mingus so I've been dipping in.

It's a classic. My favourite Mingus is Let My Children Hear Music, a later period Mingus album with more of an orchestral/big band feel, it's just brilliant.

Was curious, is it ever staged with dancers or is it just described as a "ballet" in terms of musical structure or something?

Any fans of Nubya Garcia in here? I just bought tickets to see her in a few weeks and I'm really excited. Her debut as a leader, Source, is really great, and she's also played on a whole bunch of other jazz records coming out of London in the last few years (the Maisha album is also fab).

I've only really heard her on her Nubya's 5ive album, but I found it to be pretty great. She played in London Brew, which I've read some positive things about. Supposed to be a Miles Davis - Bitches Brew tribute, with a lot of great modern London scene players. Been meaning to check it out, but I keep finding other things to listen to instead.

e: while I'm here, here's some good jazz I've enjoyed recently:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40eJ-rF8BrA

Gilmore's bandcamp page has this quote on it, which I'm sure influenced the album:

"I have a basic mechanical knowledge of the operation of the instrument, and I got an imagination, and when the time comes up in the song to play... it's me against the laws of nature...it's a game, where you have a piece of time and you get to decorate it." - Frank Zappa

Pretty great guitar jazz imho.

Abrams has a really great minimalistic/african/krautrock/cyclical thing going on. Really unique stuff.

O'Neal's Porch remains one of the best free jazz quartet albums I've heard. Back when I was first getting into it, I found the dissonance to be a bit much, but I've since come to enjoy it. Even in dissonance, the interplay between Barnes and Brown is incredible, to say nothing of the rhythm section. William Parker and Hamid Drake together are easily one of the best rhythm duos in jazz, and this album just exemplifies that.

e2: and that's not to say O'Neal's Porch is a hard album to listen to, it's actually really groovy for the most part. You just gotta be prepared for some dissonance in there.

Here's a recent release I enjoyed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2j5BJqI4Z4

There's a bunch of Sun Ra reissues popping up (which I gather is kinda happening at all times?) and the one I'm listening to now is Omniverse, really good. 1979, mostly a small combo, the soloists calm things down relative to another one from around same time, God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be, which is just Ra in a trio and everyone's going nuts, frantic in a fun way. I think the end of the '70s is my favorite period of Sun Ra of what I've heard so far, Sleeping Beauty and Lanquidity are my favorites.

Is there like a Youtube series or MOOC or something I should check out as far as leanring some of the relevant music theory? I've been reading a lot about the stuff I'm listening to but really have no idea what it means when something is described as "modal" and such.

I've been listening to Open Studio/You'll Hear It for a while now. Most of it is theory and pedagogy, but occasionally they'll have a Ron Carter interview or talk about current players too.

Occasionally Norah Jones Is Playing Along will have some jazz musicians on.

Saw some live jazz recently: just a music college performance (not sure what it's called but its a concert the jazz students put on at the end of the semester)

Really gave me a new appreciation for live jazz. Not being distracted and just watching the performers and being immersed in the music made it an amazing experience.

And there was a lot of talent! One saxophonist in particular just played the most blistering solos all night

My point: go see live jazz!
