The pandemic has shrunk our social circles, production problems have interfered with access to goods, and the political situation in many parts of the world is distressing at best. But summer is here, and in the spirit of good times, I come to you with this humble challenge: show us your favorite summer meal. Any style of cuisine, from any culture, is within your scope, so long as you can relate to us why you feel it is a summer meal for you. Get out there and make something you love, and share it with us. Prizes: First place, as voted by the goons, will receive a $50 gift card, and a token of my esteem (assuming the winner is comfortable having one shipped to them.) Second place, as voted by the goons, will receive a $25 gift card and a token of my esteem (assuming the winner is comfortable having one shipped to them.) Yay! In! I'm in Australia, in a part that actually gets cold (and indoor temperatures track outdoor temperatures because wazz insulation then, mate?) but this will be great for helping me escape my chilly existence and imagine the summertime. You should expect Christmas classics from the other antipodean posters here.

Hmm, I should definitely have some ripe tomatoes by them. My recipe is nothing special and won't win but is something I learned to love after growing tomatoes in the garden instead of buying crappy supermarket ones.

Half arse it, ask for an extension, do it anyway and post: I’ve learned more about cooking from competing in ICSA and challenging myself to do weird stuff than I ever did from reading cookbooks

Also one key thing I need I can't replicate at home, can't get locally, probably can't get shipped and will require a 12-hour round trip drive to pick up. edit: Christ that old piece of poo poo was a pain in the rear end to remove. Hell yeah! I was going to submit my son's birthday party, but in the crazy last minute prep I completely failed to document most of the food. I'm out of town next week but this extension lets me squeak one in after that!

This was a tough decision to make. I don't know how some of you don't drop from exhaustion. Summer cooking to me usually means I'm making easy stuff and trying to leave the stove off, so salads and sandwiches get a lot more frequent  I cannot stop thinking of the phrase "roasted vegetable titan" because I know it's wrong but it's funny. Te-reading these reminded me to make crispy tofu tonight because tofu is nice and because we're gonna be doing Facetime with my vegetarian mom. I've been making it a point to go meatless on Tuesdays.

Man, everyone's entries were great and I saw a lot of stuff I'd like to try my hand at in the future. I was surprised I managed to pull everything together the way I did; I was feeling quite swamped right up until the first weekend of August and was grateful for the extension. Also, the prodding. I said I'd do a follow-up post after the beer is ready, which it is, so I'll probably do a Labor Day thing with the rest of the brats, the beer, and the homemade kraut.
