Strum in a harmonizing quartet
I want to cause a revolution

What can I do? My savage
nature is beyond wild

Isekai Ojisan is the story of Yōsuke Shibazaki, who reawakens in modern day Japan after spending 17 years in a coma. He is taken in by his nephew Takafumi Takaoka and makes a living as a youtuber, recording himself performing magic tricks online. But these aren't actually magic tricks, but real magic that he is capable of performing due to the fact that while he was in a coma, his soul was whisked away to another world, one filled with all sorts of fantastical monsters and magic. Now his nephew must get him reacquainted with modern day Japan, all the while listening to the stories his uncle has to tell him.

I like this show, gives a bit of a spin on the genre. In that we're mainly seeing things through the eyes of the nephew; kinda feels metaphorical about being a care giver to someone returning home from a war with PTSD or similar trauma and trying to make them feel comfortable and giving them things they are familiar with.

i liked the manga I guess but it baited having an incredibly sad back story and so far it's just done that manga thing where it baits it forever because we need to sell more magazines and it's boring me. so i shan't be watching unless each episode covers like an entire volume which it easily could since there's so little there besides lampshading other lovely Isekai stories.

his first modern console is an Xbox one which I choose to interpret as being a series x. Uncle is an Xbox head, which I think is implying that it's weird like being a Sega kid was weird but I choose to err on the side of the author being a powerful gamer who respects the most powerful console and game catalogue in gaming history.

The uncle is weird, but at least he's not an annoying "pervert man" type (if anything he's the opposite to an extreme extent). Basically a well-meaning man who is terrible at understanding other people (I think that people are often exaggerating when they talk about characters in media being autistic, but it kinda fits for the uncle in this).

What are you referring to? I'm caught up with the current translated manga, and (kinda minor/vague manga spoilers)it seems like it's just gradually talking about his earlier years (I think he's still in the first few years of his retelling). Basically a gag manga with slowly developing characters/relationships. Despite being completely oblivious and behaving in bizarre ways, the various isekai supporting cast members (mainly elf girl) seem like they're becoming used to his behavior. That being said, it seems like something's gotta go wrong, since if the positive trajectory of his isekai relationships continued he wouldn't have been so fine with leaving it all behind.

I hope elf girl manages to somehow come over. It's hard not to root for her after all she goes through.

He has a dress leftover from elf-girl, rigorously and constantly erases anything he finds too upsetting from his mind, his journal of erased memories was so upsetting to his nephew that he demanded to forget he read it, and when what's-her-name asks some vague question about elf-girl's ultimate fate, Uncle immediately starts slamming beers down reflexively lol. it's possible that's all coincidence but it sure seems 'Uncle escaped and it cost him everything and the only thing holding him together is selective amnesia'.

Also we get told erasing old memories is permanently damaging to your personality and psyche, but Uncle has forgotten a LOT. That's inherently suspicious
.

This was all teased in like the first ten chapters and so far has not been elaborated on at all, so either I'm dead wrong and reading too much into it or I'm right and we're putting the emotional beats on hold in favor of somewhat rote humor.

There's been a bit more in the manga (I only have up to vol4, I know 5's due in a week or two) than that, I'm also curious where we're taking the nephew getting way, WAY too into this, and his one brief taste of power almost going some fuckin' DARK places and related to that, I feel like another shoe's got to drop on the girl who is into the nephew too. It's coming along at around one "wait what" per volume, which ain't bad for a gag series imo

I think I agree that the series likes to spin it's wheels a lot, but I also think it sprinkles in enough progression of sorts, either flashback or irl, to keep me reading it. Or just crazy-rear end tangents like the velociraptor stuff

Honestly if it just cut down on the lol ugly orc jokes, it'd probably feel less repetitive as a whole

yeah if the jokes were less repetitive and it was more slice of life the pace wouldn't bother me at all. i read like 8 different massive 9000 page web serials and my favorites are the ones that often spend hundreds of pages with little to not plot development, but they have something else carrying them for me, and this manga does not have that so far.

I missed the dress thing. The other stuff (like the journal of erased memories) I sorted assumed tied into the gag of "horrible stuff kept happening to him in the isekai, with him constantly getting arrested and people trying to execute him."

I feel like, if there were some really depressing outcome with elf girl, the uncle would have some sort of difficulty watching all these memories and wouldn't be casually commenting on the stuff happening in them. I hope that's not the case, because it'd be really sad!

I'm convinced its just a set-up for a joke, and and the series is going to end with a very upset Elf coming over and wondering why Uncle didn't summon her, right after Uncle explains a tragic backstory, and the entire thing was a misunderstanding.

I don't think the series would necessarily be helped by Elf coming over, because it would completely change the dynamic of things.

Fereydun

i didn't notice until watching the show that takafumi's dynamic with his uncle is that he's supposed to be a modern parallel, down to having fujimiya be a parallel to the elf lady

like he's also a complete social recluse with strong paranoia about almost any social interaction besides people he already knows

it's just he got to grow up in the modern world rather than having his situation get infinitely worse like uncle so he's more socially aware and able to fake it better

Bakeneko

I found Uncle’s “Had I been able to see that…” line very interesting because it shows that he did eventually figure out that the elf had a crush on him. It suggests that all the times he’s talked about her dismissively to Takafumi, it’s not because he’s still oblivious to what was going on but because, maybe just subconsciously, he’s sad and embarrassed about the way he acted and wants to downplay it.

I wonder if his obliviousness is less not having the right meme knowledge, but the fact he is so unattractive it causes violent reactions in people. He appears to shrug it off and it is played for gags, but that sorta thing can not be good for the self image. A beautiful woman being interested him probably just doesn't occur to him as possible. He obviously knows about the concept of tsundere without having a specific term for it because he knew exactly what Asuka was about.

^^^^ It moves past this as the supporting cast expands, and the dynamic between the characters also gradually changes. It does get a lot of mileage out of the same jokes, though it still works for me just because the faces are very funny. I hope the anime does a good job of capturing this one face I have in mind.

Unless they changed or cut it from the anime, the joke with Asuka is that he didn't know what she was about, with the gag being that he thought Asuka was in love with Kaji.

It's not quite the same. Takafumi is obviously aware of Fujimiya as a girl, but just completely dismisses the possibility of any romantic feelings. Uncle, on the other hand, seems downright asexual in his attitude and behavior.

Eeeeeeh, this can vary depending on what sort of friend group you keep. Like friends who readily insult each other sort of thing. It does lead to moments where maybe they take it to far and you get angry but it can be surprisingly easy to tolerate if they're the only friends you have. The fact that she was willing to speak up for him and stick with him probably outweighed her insults which he probably at some point internalized.

My low-key favorite joke in this series is how Uncle is honestly kind of a well-adjusted and decent person for an isekai protagonist, while his nephew would've ended up being one of those scumbag isekai protagonists who would use their power to get revenge. And how he can only live through his fantasies vicariously by watching Uncle's memories. :v:

Uncle is just a normal well-meaning dude, and while we laugh at the Sega and Eva jokes, they're written in to call up the fact that our perception of what the pop-culture zeitgeist was like in the mid-90s is completely skewed due to modern-day hindsight. It's such a brilliant way to call out all the terrible isekai tropes by putting a mirror up to them, and showing us how warped our expectations/perceptions of the genre are.

Elf girl isn't really that bad later, though. She mostly just yells "dumb orc" or whatever at him when she gets embarrassed by something (or mad about him doing something really dumb/oblivious), but she isn't the "constantly prickly and angry" sort of tsundere (like your typical Asuka type) and is pretty nice and normal most of the time.

Ice girl is funny though because she's just an extremely lazy loser. Hero girl isn't very interesting/funny yet, outside of the reactions she prompts from elf/ice girl.
