THE LIAR
Past Observer Award Threads:
2020
2021

It's that time again, and by that time I mean the middle of the loving Summer. It's a little over halfway through the year, which means it's time to start arguing with each other about opinions that won't be solidified for another five months! In 2020 and 2021 I made these threads in September, but this year I'm doing it in July, because I didn't want to wait until September. But I still feel like there's been plenty to discuss. AEW and NJPW have finished their groundbreaking crossover event, Forbidden Door, with AEW now having done three of their five PPVs for the year and NJPW heading into their biggest tour of the year, the G1. Stardom is garnering critical acclaim and we might run into a situation where two members of the Third Generations held world titles in different promotions that aren't New Japan this year, which is...fun! And I guess WWE is, I dunno. Doin' WWE stuff? Let's talk about it!

Rules:
1. Don't be an rear end in a top hat. Seriously. Good natured ribbing is one thing, we can all take a bit of friendly goofin', but if somebody genuinely feels someone is the best wrestler of the year or whatever or if somebody puts something you like as the worst thing of the year, you can disagree with them, but don't call them an idiot who doesn't know what they're talking about. We should all know how to behave ourselves on this one at this point. So behave yourself.

And that's it. That's the only rule. Just be nice.

Here's a C+P friendly version of the ballot! Don't feel obligated to fill out anything you don't want to. I'll personally be skipping every MMA Award because I don't watch MMA. Remember that category A awards are top-3 ranked voting and category B awards are single vote. If you're not sure what you're feeling for any particular award, post your thoughts about it! The point of this is to generate discussion!

Note: The "Best Box Office" and "Shad Gaspard/Jon Huber Memorial Award" categories are decided by Dave, not voted on by readers. I left them so we can share our opinions on them anyway for fun, but don't take them too seriously. We don't need to argue with each other too much on the "is a good person" award.

The only awards I currently care about:

Wrestler of the Year: 5 months into the year it was Hangman, now it might be Moxley but Jericho could sneak in on Wednesday.
Most Outstanding: 3 months into the year it was Sammy, now it might also be Moxley. Kingston could even sneak in on Wednesday.

Best Major Show: Forbidden Door
Match of the Year: Briscoes vs FTR
Best on Interviews: Chris Jericho

Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic: Vince McMahon using Raw as his sexual misconduct platform

Most Underrated: Cavernario
Tag Team of the Year: Currently Jurassic Express, FTR might be able to sneak in.

I don't think there is anything disrespectful, he's great and could sneak into Most Outstanding if he keeps up this run. Most Outstanding and Rookie of the Year would be unprecedented.

are we not using Dec-Dec for voting purposes? i will admit i mostly skimmed your OP, and am honestly not sure if the observer awards even use Dec-Dec still. please add The Briscoes vs FTR , as it is my 4th Place Finisher, if that is so the case.

It reek of DDT is minor league, AEW is major league stuff so none of his DDT accomplishments matter. The man is not a rookie, he has multiple Sumo Hall main events under his belt.

I wish I could vote multiple entrants for some of those category B awards. Lash Legend probably has the 2nd WMOTY as well with that match against Nikkita Lyons, and I remember some GCW show towards the beginning of the year being a real stinker but I couldn't remember the name so went with Royal Rumble instead (also it might not qualify as a major wrestling show idk).

His billed weight is 1kg over the NJPW Jr division limit of 100kg, or about 3lbs for our American listeners. He would've made the old WCW Cruiserweight limit though, that was 102kg

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch
Rookie of the Year is defined as anyone that has debuted full time for a major promotion since September of the year before the awards: so the cut off is 1 September 2021. Its not that well defined and votes do get tossed sometimes: we know that basically every Japanese promotion of note counts (Takeshita, incidentally, finished second in 2013 so shockingly isn't eligible); people have had votes counted for their first year working major US Indies (Matt Riddle won in 2016 which was well before his WWE debut and he'd only worked Indies at that point) but also scattered dates for a GCW or PWG doesn't disqualify you. Although again that isn't consistent: Taylor Rust got rookie votes in 2020 despite working since the late 2000s and being a PWG regular before Dave started attending there.

Personally I'd split it between a rookie award with a more defined criteria (I think you've got to leave the scope wider in the US than Japan as in the latter rookies tend to be more visible so you could perhaps do something like rookies are eligible for the first three years unless you win then you can't win again) and a Breakout Star award to cover people who've had longer careers but who break out with a major promotion (defined more strictly) later on in their career.

If that's the criteria then Bron Breakker is the easy rookie of the year

The case for Fujiwara is simple. He debuted in November 2021. In the 8 months since he's already had a 4¼* match and a couple of 4*. People are talking about him as a rookie who just gets it from day 1 in a way that puts him in the company of Kurt Angle & Jun Akiyama.

Now, whether his career matches those guys is a separate issue. But as a rookie? He's been incredible.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

I would personally vote for someone capable of having good matches instead which is why I am voting for Soup Boy.

Like it was funny when people acted like he was a can't miss main eventer last year, but the guy has bad feud after bad feud, his matches never have any buzz and whenever I see clips of his promos they are pretty average. There's a field of actual good prospects in Japan right now. (And of course the best one who is over in America right now.)

And on top of NXT's ratings are in the absolute cellar and their one big live show had a crowd less than half of what NXT used to do on Mania weekend.
