If anyone is interested, I can do a quick recap at some point.

Recap on Laporta’s press release.

*Laporta claims Barça is the victim of an orchestrated smear campaign to destabilise the club.

* Denies that the money was paid to Negreira to gain direct sporting advantage or through refereeing appointments. The club tries to dismantle this by arguing two things: that he was paid for reports, that these reports exist and that there are invoices. And on the other hand, that Negreira had no real capacity to appoint referees or influence. In fact, they insist that the reports were made by his son.

* The preliminary report commissioned by Barça to their own department of compliance in collaboration with KPMG finds no evidence of wrongdoing.

*On the other hand, Laporta does not rule out that someone else has taken advantage of this movement of money to make a profit. That may be proved or not in the upcoming trial. Specifically mentions Josep Contreras.

* Laporta has lashed out at Real Madrid for appearing in the case as an injured party and has assured that for 70 years, the heads of the CTA were ex-members of Real Madrid.

*Laporta insists on the theory of the campaign against Barça and points to Tebas. He then highlights that Ceferin has recanted after talking to him. In this line, he thanks Infantino (FIFA) and Rubiales (RFEF) that they are waiting for a ruling before making a move.

*According to him, what the instigators of this controversy wants is to turn a non-existent case of buying referees into a case that damages FCB's reputation. The Negreira Case is not a case of sports corruption. Services were provided that were documented. There were invoices and payments recorded in the club's books. They had passed the pertinent tax reviews.

To sum it up, Laporta played the victim card over and over, insisting on the conspiracy narrative against the club. Also on a couple off-hand comments, directly states that “some spheres of power” are using this case to denigrate Barça as a way to destroy one pf the strongest signs of catalan identity and thus harming Catalonia in the process (jfc, what a shameless scumbag).
His modus operandi during the whole press release was pretty clear: Deny any wrongdoings by himself and the club, acknowledging the payments as the price for a legitimate technical advice service and defying anyone, especially the prosecutor’s office, to provide evidence of buying referees to get direct benefits or sports results. Lastly, attacking one by one who feels they have wronged the club unjustly: Tebas, Real Madrid and the media, promising legal retribution.

To illustrate this, I’ll post his answer to a direct question by a reporter during the Q&A:

Q:Why was 7.3 million paid to the company of an active CTA member?

A:"You have to contextualize that this money was paid over 18 years. It was not done in one year. It's 18 years. They were important and necessary reports. Made by people with an important trajectory in that world. The internal investigation has found 629 reports and 43 videos. Also 4 reports on other subjects. That's just from 2014 to 2018. I think we need to contextualize and make it clear that this has been a huge amount of work for many years. Done by capable people. When reference is made to him being the vice president of the CTA, it should be made clear that the main provider of those services is Negreira's son. The vice-president of the CTA had no capacity to alter the outcome of matches or to appoint referees. I insist. This is stated in article 29 of the RFEF. This hypothesis that this gentleman had influence on refereeing decisions is false. Article 29 of the RFEF itself denies it. It says that he has no capacity. He was not in his functions. This has been corroborated by the statements of several referees. He was not able to alter results or appoint referees".

Enough said.

And that’s basically it, if you’re reading this and you’re thinking that this is not that different from what he’s been saying all this time, you’re mostly correct. This is his explanation, unsatisfying as it is. Don’t expect him to deviate from this narrative until there’s more saucy developments during the court investigation.
If anyone wants more info or expanded context on some point, ask away. I can do an effortpost with literal quotes if needed as well.

Athletic have done an updated deep dive on Barca's new stadium

https://theathletic.com/4376788/2023/04/04/barcelona-camp-nou-rebuild-espai-barca/

quote:

-Previous club president Josep Maria Bartomeu left an €815million (£717.6m; $885.9m) project ready to go but Laporta immediately replaced it with an amended plan that will cost at least €1.5billion
-All the original architects, engineers and consultants have either left, been fired or are no longer working on the project — including -Japanese architect firm Nikken Sekkei
Some new executives and partners who were hired lack experience of working on such a complex project — including Turkish builders Limak
-Permits from the local council were still not sorted in April — with the current design described as a “hotch-potch” drawn from four different architectural companies, who all worked off different briefs
-There are now significant concerns about whether the project can be delivered on time and within budget
-Financing was finally secured, weeks after the deadline imposed by Laporta, in a very complex arrangement which will cost the club more than initially anticipated

Because they changed the plans (including to have two tiers of VIP) financing is now at 8-10% instead of 3-4% that was already secure before laporta decided he had to have his design

Everyone experienced with stadium builds has walked away because it's now a mish mash of 4 people's work in what was already a highly complex project

Joshua Robinson and Jon Clegg reveal in their book Messi vs Ronaldo, how Messi’s father, Jorge, suggested to the then Barça president, Josep Bartomeu, in 2017 that they might like to sign his son’s mate Ángel Di María from PSG. Barça didn’t really want him but made a token bid of €30m knowing it would be rejected; at which Jorge Messi asked them to give that spare €30m to Leo. Bartomeu, recognising where power at the club lay, complied.
