vscode is a lovely text editor because it supposed to be an IDE which it is not

i use and like emacs, but thats with 17 years of manicuring a .emacs config to fix all the terrible defaults, and with a kinesis keyboard where ctrl is under a thumb and not a pinky. in any case i wouldn't recommend it to a friend

on the other hand my programming career has been going pretty well and i assume this is entirely the result of my choice in text editor

i can respect emacs-vim grognards, but since those setups are almost always artisinal and unique, it means those skills are untransferable to junior coworkers

whereas using a thing like intellij or visual studio you can ramp up people faster and teach them their tools without the keyboard wizard learning curve

also greatly reduces chances of "works on my machine"

i used to have a heavily customized emacs but these days when on a new system i just set a couple paren-mode variables and call it a day

also ive pretty much stopped using it for actual coding in favor of pycharm/clion/etc

neovim works fine and requires no plugin janitoring. i only use it for quick edits in a shell tho, vscode owns for anything more studly

narrow applicability makes dunking on stuff in that space a lot less fun though, i can pretend to know all normal editors just fine, but never even seen pycharm.

I worked at a place briefly where everybody was using pycharm but I think they were just cargo-culting the one guy who knew what he was doing

Wasn't there a YOSPOS goon who used to go sicko mode if you said anything bad about vim? Am I just imagining this? I swear I remember someone melting down about this in one of the earlier versions of the linux thread.

The defaults are unusable on a normal keyboard, I only use it because i have ctrl and alt on the home row.

I guess instead of hitting ctrl and alt with your pinky you could pick up your hand and hit them with your index finger, but who does that?

Many early terminals & keyboards also had ctrl in line with the home row, so the chording was a more sensible choice when it was conceived than it is now
