Hi everyone! Can anyone read this? Not sure how these new message boards work.

It's been an eventful summer of sport, what with the joy of the Olympics in Barcelona:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8d7tz2YK3A

And the disappointment of Euro '92:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxUogBsOnOQ(recorded these off the telly with my camcorder, not sure about the squiggles think I pressed a button by accident)

The excitement hasn't stopped there though. Tomorrow the football season kicks off as usual, but it's not just any football season. Starting this season we're going to be watching something called the Premier League instead of the First Division.

Been trying to keep up with the figures but they're just making my head spin. £305 million for broadcasting rights? Not sure how I feel about it to be honest, and I don't think it'll be a long-term thing. That being said, 60 live matches this season! Don't know how I'll be able to keep up. Been trying to set up my Sky dish for the last week ready for Super Sunday and Monday Night Football (very American!)

Here are the teams for this season. I cut this out of the paper this morning, not sure why some of the badges are wrong, think I pressed a button when I was scanning it in:

I'm interested to know how fans of other teams think they're going to get on this year, but thought I'd give a run down of my team ahead of the big kick-off:

LEEDS UNITED CHAMPIONS OF ENGLAND 1991-92

Before anyone starts any suggestions of glory supporting or anything like that I've been following Leeds since the bad old days in Division Two (or Division One I suppose it is now? I think). Anything less than winning the title again or at least contending would be a disappointment. They've kept the title winning side almost entirely intact and picked up a like-for-like replacement for Gordon Strachan (probably his last season) in Arsenal's David Rocastle. Not sure about that record transfer fee though. 2 million quid for a footballer! The mind boggles.

Any side that wants to get past Strachan, Speed, Batty, McAllister, Cantona, Dorigo, Wallace...I could go on but you get the picture. They're the team to beat imo. Also just casually smashed 4 past Liverpool in the Charity Shield last weekend. If Cantona doesn't win the golden boot I'll eat my hat.

Like I said I don't know much about how other sides are shaping up but that lad Alan Shearer signing for Blackburn is a big deal for a newly promoted side. Sheffield Wednesday aren't messing about signing Chris Waddle from Marseille. Man United have signed Dion Dublin but look like they want to try and win the league with a load of youth players. This will be Ferguson's last season. That Rumbelows Cup win last season just papered over the cracks.

Saw this advert earlier in the week and remembered to set the video to record it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EFiPldOq9s

Here's the first round of fixtures - remember, the Sunday and Monday games are on TV so if you can't get Sky, see if your local is showing it (or hang around in front of Dixons for as long as they let you)

15/8/92
Arsenal FC v Norwich City
Chelsea FC v Oldham Athletic
Coventry City v Middlesbrough FC
Crystal Palace v Blackburn Rovers
Everton FC v Sheffield Wednesday
Ipswich Town v Aston Villa
Leeds United v Wimbledon FC
Sheffield United v Manchester United
Southampton FC v Tottenham Hotspur

16/8/92
Nottingham Forest v Liverpool FC

17/8/92
Manchester City v Queens Park Rangers

Thought it would be good to have a place to keep track of the results and events of the upcoming season as they happen for posterity - I get the paper delivered every morning so will write down the results and post the table every week.

30 years from now we'll be looking at this season and marvelling at how far we've come. Not here though, home computers are just an expensive fad that won't catch on long term.

Sworn to dedicate my heart and soul to the restoration of human kind!

Went down the shop this morning and they don't even have the latest sticker book in yet. Didn't the Mirror advertise that they start giving them out around now?

Anyway, really looking forward to the new season. I know it's been a couple years since we last won the league and we let in 4 last weekend, but we looked really good going forward now that Rush and Barnes are fit again. If they can get back to their previous form and if we can tighten things up at the back, then surely we'll be turning Anfield into the home of that shiny new trophy, just like we did the old one. I can sniff number 19 on the horizon - just need to start things off properly against Forest and set a good pace for the rest of the season this month.

Gonna be really weird seeing Dalglish back in the first division again. Or is that the Prem? The Premmy? I'm not sure how I feel about this break-away league, to be honest. At least there's more foot on the tele now.

Congratulations to Brian Deane on taking just 4 minutes to score the first ever Premier League goal as part of a double against a flat Man United side. I said they'd struggle.

Other results of note include Arsenal conceding 4 second half goals at home against Norwich, with an uncharacteristic misjudgement of a high ball by David Seaman:

Ugh not a great start to the campaign

loving gorgeous away kit though

Deane getting the first, could have had a third to add to his pen if not for a close offside call, absolutely tormented us in the first half

Defending at set pieces wasn't great, nearly undone by a simple throw in routine, close calls at several corners

Young Giggs had a goal chalked off for offside, not sure myself. Promising youngster seems a nice lad.

Pallister weirdly caught for pace and gave an absolutely stonewall pen away

The first ever Ford Super Sunday has been and gone and it lived up to the hype imo. Unfortunately I must have pressed a button because I didn't record the full game. I got the opening credits though. Not sure about Nottingham's sporting tradition going all the way back to Robin Hood:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bXzES95zAA

I watched the 2 hours of pre match buildup (riveting) then my Sky dish fell off the roof and I had to go out to fix it, only recorded the adverts at half time. Gotta hand it to Sky Movies - been saying I wanted to be able to watch Rocky V and King of the Kickboxers without changing the channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1iqYtWPfes

I recorded the match highlights later though. Teddy Sheringham looks ready for the new season. Forest are in for a good season with him leading the line. Credit as well to the young lad David James making his debut for Liverpool after moving from Watford in the summer. Looked impressive despite conceding the goal and somehow not giving away a penalty by clattering Roy Keane. Don't know who that fella at the end in the knock-off Leeds shirt is either:

Monday Night Football tomorrow, Man City v QPR. Not a fixture I think is ever going to be of huge significance in the future but this one should be a decent watch.

Monday Night Football has arrived on our televisions - the weekend is now 3 days long according to Sky. Lots of interesting details in the pre-match buildup - particularly useful to know Man City's phone number, opening times and season ticket prices.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLI3R9z97NQ

Lots of entertainment besides the game - we had the beautiful Sky Strikers, fireworks and a plane flying a banner over the stadium! You just genuinely do not know what is going to happen next. Undercover played Baker Street on the pitch at half time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5wJ2Hr_yqY

Unfortunately I was so caught up in capturing events around the game that I couldn't get any footage of the game itself, apart from one of the goals, an absolute rocket from Andy Sinton:

Results of note are Alan Shearer barging Jimmy Carter into the stands and scoring another beaut to beat Arsenal late on.

David Hirst scoring twice to beat Forest and doing no harm to his chances of an England call-up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6WyL7wLWZE&t=148s

FORD SUPER SUNDAY has just wrapped up and the third Premier League weekend is at a close. Everyone who said that breakaway money leagues would result in non-competitive fixtures and boring games have been shown right up because it's been an absolute goal bonanza:

22/08/1992
Aston Villa 1-1 Southampton FC
Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Manchester City
Manchester United 1-1 Ipswich Town
Middlesbrough FC 4-1 Leeds United
Norwich City 1-1 Everton FC
Oldham Athletic 5-3 Nottingham Forest
Queens Park Rangers 3-2 Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday 3-3 Chelsea FC
Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Crystal Palace
Wimbledon FC 1-2 Coventry City

23/08/1992
Liverpool FC 0-2 Arsenal FC

Wouldn't look too deeply into that Middlesbrough result though. Cantona should have had about 4 on his own, just need to improve the defending from set pieces and Leeds will soon be back to winning ways. Either way the Tudor Crisps Family Enclosure was rocking:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPk7NdQTBf0

Oldham were 5-0 up against Forest before Cloughie's boys woke up and tried to make a game of it. Quite like that Gunnar Halle, one to watch I reckon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Lnit3SyTAE

Sheffield Wednesday went 2-0 up (David Hirst has scored 4 in his last 2 and surely must be in the England squad for the friendlies in September), before Chelsea fought back and then went ahead 3-2. An 81st minute Danny WIlson equaliser saved the point (and embarassment) for the Owls.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi8A0TdQtHA

A feisty London derby between Spurs and Crystal Palace where both teams were reduced to 10 men after some off-the-ball naughtiness between Andy Thorn and Neil Ruddock. Don't like to see that simulation from Chris Coleman to win a penalty though. That nonsense has no place in the English game.

Fixtures are piling up already - 4 rounds of games in 10 days! Thought the point of a breakaway money league was to try and limit the need to cram as many matches in as possible for the welfare of the players.

Couple of standout results in midweek - Dion Dublin scored his first goal for Man United as they get their first win of the season:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn8cTVOmHaA

Andy Impey put QPR top of the league with an unbeaten record in the league so far. Early days but they look like a serious proposition at the moment:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCH5aAUM-ko

The real highlight though, of course, is Leeds responding to that blip against Boro in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 win at home against Spurs. Congratulations to Eric Cantona on scoring the first ever Premier League hat-trick and cementing his place in pub quizzes for all eternity. Feel bad for Thorstvedt on that first goal though. This new back pass rule is going to create future generations of goalkeepers who are expected to play the ball with their feet! Ridiculous.

Massive transfer news! In a bid to rejuvenate their awful start to the season Spurs have signed Teddy Sheringham from Nottingham Forest. Hopefully he can provide some much needed firepower up front - spurs have scored 3 in their last 5. Don't know where this leaves Forest - think they need to bring a replacement in to replace those missing goals.

Looks like the immediate result for forest is, er, a defeat at home to man united, goals from Mark Hughes and nice young man Ryan Giggs

Other results of note include:

Blackburn going top of the league through the softest penalty ever awarded after a lovely bit of skill by alan shearer (4 goals in 5 now)

Two more rounds of fixtures in the books - Norwich still top of the league with Coventry nipping at their heels. Never nice to see a season ended by injury, but Man United have carried on their recent bounceback despite Dion Dublin's broken leg against Palace. Bad news for Paul Elliott at Chelsea, looks like he might be out indefinitely after a mistimed challenge from Dean Saunders in the Liverpool game. Speaking of Saunders, looks like he's all but finished at Liverpool and is on his way to Aston Villa. After beating Palace 3-0 doesn't look like they need him but could be a useful addition up front.

The footage got destroyed by my video recorder but Sheringham scored his first goal for Spurs against Sheffield United. Forest are still stinking the place out, The golden boot appears to be a 3 way fight between Shearer, Cantona and David White, and the less said about Leeds's start the better. As long as Cantona keeps up the fine work we'll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season though.

We also had international action the other day in case you missed it, a friendly against Spain in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers in October:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7gGZmuTxQU

It, er, didn't go well. Nice to see David White rewarded for his red-hot start with a first international cap, surely the first of many.

Even more fixture congestion coming up with European games coming into consideration. Leeds will be playing in the newly formed Champions League, while Sheffield Wednesday and Man United will be playing in the UEFA Cup. We'll also keep an eye on Liverpool in the Cup Winner's Cup.

England's first game is on the 14th October against Norway - only a few weeks!

19/09/1992
Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool FC (footage destroyed - Dean Saunders scored twice for Villa against his former club)
Everton FC 0-2 Crystal Palace
Norwich City 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Oldham Athletic 4-2 Ipswich Town (Graham Sharp with the volley of the week, phwoar)
Queens Park Rangers 3-3 Middlesbrough FC
Sheffield United 1-1 Arsenal FC
Southampton FC 1-1 Leeds United (Perry Groves just allowed to shove defenders over to open the scoring apparently)
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Manchester United (An okay goal from Ryan Giggs if you like that sort of thing)
Wimbledon FC 1-1 Blackburn Rovers (Three reds! Mike Newell trying a new career in goalkeeping! Foul and abusive language! Shearer scoring again!)

20/09/1992
Manchester City 0-1 Chelsea FC (Indirect free kick inside the box :getin:)

21/09/1992
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Coventry City
