In anticipation of the premier tomorrow, I dug through the Social Security Baby Names data set to see if GoT had any noticeable impact on baby names. I suck at data viz, and after way too much time trying to figure out charts, I present this. GoT premiered in 2011 and we can see a noticeable increase in babies being named after characters. Arya dominates, with Kit and Daenerys following. Jamie actually continued to decrease, maybe because he was a villain for part of the series. If anyone else wants to explorer the dataset, it can be found here.

I maintain that Arya is just a nice name and it's a shame that it's tarred with the same brush as people who name their kids loving Khaalisee.

Ya I named my son after a fictional psychopath whose legacy died about a week before he did, by making GBS threads himself to death while also being murdered by his son

I worked at a hotel that would have celebrities staying fairly regularly and about late 2013- early 2014 almost every woman celebrity suddenly started using some form of Kelly Cee as their check in pseudonym.

Kelly Cee is phonetically similar to "Khalleesi," which is a title for a female Khal (or I guess a Khal's wife, I forget which), or head of a kind of warrior clan, in the fictional television show Game of Thrones.

Khal's wife. The Dothraki are super patriarchal and misogynistic because they are based on racist tropes regarding Mongolians and the indigenous Americans of the Great Plains, rather than on those actual cultures.

Matt Smith is hilariously awful in the first episode Otherwise it’s fine but dull. Far from bad. Some cool violence and an emotional bit Escobarbarian fucked around with this message at 08:37 on Aug 21, 2022 |

gently caress. That was actually an awesome first episode, Matt Smith is great... I don't know what the other poster's problem with him is. These names are going to take me a minute to learn but I was like that with GoT for the longest time too, I think that the characters are all different enough that it won't be an issue. I'm already invested in Rhaenyra and Allicent's relationship too. I've never personally cared about the Targs much so I didn't read the Fire & Blood book but this is making me reconsider.

I'd say that was a good first episode. It's going to be interesting to see a show that is basically GoT but very focussed in its setting/storyline. A strength but also sometimes weakness of GoT was how it's story was spread over so many places, characters and storylines (it's certainly one of the reasons why many had doubts if GoT/Asoiaf could ever work as a TV show). This show is (or at least seems to be) the complete opposite of that. There is of course always the potential to further open up the setting to more places etc. but it's definitely a contrast to GoT and even its first episode who had to do A LOT more legwork. Also I really like Emilia Clarke as a person and she grew a lot as actress over the course of the series but I gotta say that I like what I have seen from Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra) and she is definitetly ahead of (early GoT) Emilia though just as usual with HBO the cast is overall as good as you expect from them. It's obviously too early to call out any performance as "great" but this sort of consistency in HBO shows is what sets them apart.

I'd have really enjoyed it as a 300 or so page book that focuses on the main, actually interesting Targaryans. But there's another 400 pages or so of boring shite.
