It's kinda lame they're just now introducing the idea of bad rulers slicing themselves on the iron throne. I kept expecting them to show Cersei or even Dany slicing themselves (though I guess the latter never sat on it)

Maybe, as some have suggested, the Snow series is going to deal with the WW not truly being gone or something, and that's why they included it. Or maybe it's just an easter egg like the dagger.

I often wonder if it's just people joking or if they really think Arya being the one to strike the Night Man means the prophecy is stupid. Jon and Dany assemble the force and are the generals. Isn't that like, what the prophecy actually was?

Like when you talk about who beat Custer you mention the leaders of the force, not the person who physically killed him.

People don't like it because Arya had absolutely nothing to do with that plotline until the 11th hour. It feels like a plot beat that belonged to Jon and they were just subverting expectations for the hell of it.

It's definitely looking like the prophecy wasn't just a one-off scene.

My impression is that it was basically just a parley which had not been attempted up until that point. Having a token escort was just keeping everyone honest.

Daemon stole a dragon egg, which is a big deal in and of itself, but the more important bit, assuming I understand correctly, is that he stole the egg that was given to the King's infant son, and then announced he was going to give it to the heir he had with his whore. The King seemed somewhat uninterested until Rhaenyra asked which egg was stolen and when he heard suddenly he was ready to go to Dragonstone himself. Maybe Daemon would not physically hurt his brother but that sequence of events seems like it was intended to cause emotional pain.

If GRRM had cranked out a book every few years it wouldn't have mattered if AFFC was slow or if he needed 10 books instead of 7.

It felt like Dany hadn't done too much to lose Varys' loyalty at the point where he was trying to poison her.

I feel like I have no idea what they're going for at this point with Viserys's health. Consumption? Greyscale?

That scene where Alicent is just standing there blubbering in the rain while Otto tells her that Rhaenyra will have her children killed was really good.

Can you imagine if they recasted Dany or Arya halfway in season 1

They almost did. The original pilot that they've never shown had Tamzin Merchant as Dany.

I feel like the marriage proposal was either an attempt to get under Alicent's skin in a deniable way or a means to score points with her father and make it look like she's trying to patch things up. 'I will marry my totally-not-a-bastard child to your trueborn child' isn't much of a proposal.

I remember every time D&D gave a post show interview and talked about Stannis it was always a really wrong take on the character.

Stephen Dillane somehow perfectly grasped the character despite the fact that he seemingly didn't want to be on the show and had little to go on as far as character notes.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, the whole confrontation over Aemond's eye is reminiscent of the S1 scene from the original show where Arya is called on the carpet about attacking Joffrey.

TOOT BOOT
May 25, 2010

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I thought it was interesting that when Viserys asked Aemond where he heard this foul treasons, he looks at his mother, pauses, then says Aegon. I feel like during that beat he realized if he actually said 'My mom' she might be executed but the consequences for his brother would be very mild in comparison.

TOOT BOOT

Another thing, since this is the no-spoilers thread and it might not have come up. Last episode when Aemond is complaining about how they gave him a pig to ride and he wants a dragon, Alicent says something like 'You'll ride a dragon eventually' and his weird sister pipes up on the background and says 'He'll give an eye for it'

TOOT BOOT

There was one thing I found fairly unbelievable, the Strong kid openly laughing about the pig. Like really, you look like a twerpy 14 year old and you're going to laugh at that guy?

Viserys dying is like a Tywin Lannister moment where he had to die but the actor not being on the show anymore sucks.

I was actually thinking that too. If Aemond gets the upper hand he just stops short of actually cutting Sir Criston. Doesn't work that way with an iron ball on a chain. And they went out of their way to show that it had bone-shattering force behind it because it broke his shield.

I definitely don't think that. He's entertaining but I wouldn't call him sympathetic. Of course, part of that was the huge misstep of showing how his wife was cooler than him and then having him cave in her skull with a rock.

I feel like it's a lot harder to find someone to root for on this show, compared to the original.

I feel like the tea was probably a failure on the writer's part. Everyone that read the books just assumed it was moon tea. Everyone that hasn't read the books probably doesn't know what the gently caress moon tea is because it's only come up once ever in a thirty-second scene from 2-3 weeks ago.

Meanwhile Daemon looks the same over 15-20 years.

It is a little jarring how characters on the show are aging at different rates, or not seeming to age at all in some cases. I guess that's the peril of having a story cover such a long period of time in one season.

The books occasionally kinda play with the idea that bad rulers cut themselves on the throne, which is even more elaborate and sharp than the one in HOTD, even. But I mean realistically if the fuckin King sits down on the throne and gets cut he's probably going to order someone to file down every sharp edge pronto.

I can't actually think of anything that would be that interesting that would be set after the main series. Especially based around Jon Snow being north of the wall in a completely depopulated area. Seems like Bran would have a pretty good handle on political stuff since he can just view the past and spy on people with raven, and killing off Dany and the Night King and then bringing them back would just diminish the ending to the main series which was already diminished by its execution.
