PostNouveau posted:I assume that kid died. (He seemed very young too. I think he was supposed to be like a 16-year-old heckling a 13-year-old) I think the show is, uh, showing us that 200 years before the events of GoT, it was still OK to kill another motherfucker in the name of honor whenever, wherever, as long as both parties produce blades at the ready. That duel culture can be hard to wring out of a male dominated culture and was so prevalent in our own recent history that some US states still make you sign a pledge that you will not participate in a duel if you are elected to a public office. We’re being shown a Westeros that, while still in a ‘silver age’ and more beautiful than we one we are used to, it is still two centuries behind in cultural customs. If I remember correctly, tourney jousts and melees didn’t necessarily have to be blood sport. In the HotD tourney, knights (mostly noble sons, no less) were straight up executing each other on the ground. Not even a chance for a chivalrous tap out or offering their armor as ransom.

I was getting “soft-core Showtime porn in the 90’s” vibe. Which is not bad, honestly. I have the same kind of nostalgia I do for that as I do Saturday morning cartoons.

Kinda rushed through the previous 2 unread pages… Thoughts on Daemon spooking the horse so easily: he’s a champion level member of the equestrian warrior class. A goddam knight. He knows everything about horses and how to gently caress with an enemy’s horse. The moment he tried grab the horse’s bit and bridle I knew he would try to flip it on her. Thoughts on Cole being able to walk away from killing another knight during a wedding celebration: as was demonstrated earlier with the teen noble boy ganking the older bully noble boy, Westeros is still at a stage where it’s an expectation that young men will kill each other during otherwise benign social activities. Everybody is going assume this was a “talk poo poo, get hit” interaction and move on with their lives. Also, as noted, Kingsguard are like 007s and pretty free license to murder as they deem necessary. Also, keep in mind, everybody in this wedding is piss-rear end wine drunk and making dumb decisions and talking poo poo. Everybody but Cole, who is stone sober and thus all more terrifying for losing his poo poo like that.

Open Source Idiom posted:Yeah, I've a friend who's been reading Rhaenyra as potentially trans / genderqueer, partly influenced by Emma D'arcy's casting. I’ve been doing some nerd reading on matrilineal societies in the pre-classical Mediterranean world (pre Bronze Age collapse, basically), and inheritance through the mother just makes more sense, especially in terms of agriculture holdings. Those societies also were matrilocal, meaning the husband would leave his mother’s home and go live with the family of his wife. If marriages were dissolved, a woman was never without a home for herself and her children. Avuncular inheritance is also prevalent in these societies, the mother’s brothers leaving their inheritance to their nephews. Interesting poo poo.

He is literally doing the “look at my amazing new body, now I can dress awesome” montage scene and still wears those loving sneakers for the rest of the movie. He loving dies wearing them.. It’s an absolute bizarre character choice.

roomtone posted:"Well, it's unreasonable to say a woman can't sit on the throne. Hypothetically, one could just as well as a man" You’re being a willful turd, but you do bring up an interesting point. Most conventional Western fantasy stories deal with the reviving a lost kingdom or bloodline…or returning the order of things to a previous gold age. With that context, it is obvious the kind of writer and reader that would be attracted to a conservative theme, like that. Modern fantasy as we know it is not a progressive creature. Should new generation of fantasy stories be not just about toppling upstart empires to reinstall a Golden Age kingdom, but tearing down ancient and harmful societies and institutions to allow the flourishing of a new, self determining age? That’s a rhetorical question by the way, goons.

roomtone posted:So you can sit and pick at all the little ways we are wrong to do so, and that's fine, but it adds very little. Respectfully, I think this is a big clue why some people find these kind’s discussion frustrating and even banal. You’d think a normal person would consume content and then decide if that content was for them or not. If it is not for them, they stop watching it and move on like a healthy person. If they do like it, then they watch it until it ends or starts being bad. Experiencing a show that is good is your primary concern. Not here. gently caress that. Picking and psychoanalysis and societal theory, and general pettiness. That’s the primary concern. The act of turning every thing we kinda enjoy into a community college English II workshop. If we could have the inane, disassembling conversations without actually having to spend watching TV for hours better invested in sleep, we would. I’m sorry that’s not your thing and I hope your frustration doesn’t come from a sense alienation.

These are brothers who are different men with different motivations, but they are both capable of heroic feats of endurance when the moment calls. Both incidents end with Daemon offering a crown to his brother that he had earned or could have kept through simple right of force. Seriously, though, comparing the two scenes is peak English 201 essay question and this episode earned it.
