He's one of the first gen AEW guys and he's always doing promo stuff, including for this very game! He might not be an A lister, but he's AEW as much as anyone in my view point.

Game is out for those who pre-ordered the Elite Edition. Also, for those who haven't heard, some people datamined the game and found that at some point we're getting Stadium Stampede, an online Battle Royale mode that uses up to 30 players.

The reviews are OK...but I think the fact that they've said the intent is to continually add to FF over the years (a la No Man's Sky) as opposed to annualizing AEW games keeps it in the "Buy" category for me. An OK game today can be an excellent one in at least a few months, and it's not like the game is outright broken like NMS and Cyberpunk were. That, and the base game is still cheaper at launch ($60 CDN) than drat near everything else AAA that comes out these days save for Metroid Prime ($50 CDN), THQ-Nordic isn't EA/2k/Activision, and the PS+ discount on the Elite edition ($72 instead of $79) is still active until tomorrow morning. That kind of pricing ought to be rewarded by us consumers voting with our dollars.

I just sat down and did a Road to Elite mode in one sitting, and it was a hoot and holler. The gameplay is just really good, it's like all my hours on the N64 games came flooding back. I guess there are different events that can happen in the story mode based on how you do or something? It's clear they had a lot of fun writing the single player stories, there are some meta-jokes in there (at one restaurant my CAW thanked the waitress for spelling out a pronunciation because the section wasn't in voice over). I really just want them to add more wrestlers, and this will be a game that gets played for a long time. Or it can be the Wrestlemania 2000 to a No Mercy in a couple years, that's good too.

A little disappointed by the derth of my favorites and some of the create a roster cosmetics not really lending themselves to them, but I haven't dived into the gameplay yet. The stuff like Orange tucking his hands in his pocket or the skateboard stuff makes me hopeful. I guess what will make me regret or think it was a great value is if more of those updates are NMS tier and free or low cost or if they're gonna nickle and dime us for everything. Cool there are 40 different baseball caps and no Jake's purple hat, and no way to decorate and customize lucha masks. E: just did a few exhibition matches. It's fun, bur it's been too long since I played a wrestle game so some of getting used to the controls made my early matches clunky. The 'unlockables for purchase' is from doing challenges, there's base ones which don't reset and daily and weeklies. It's interesting that the displayed w/l's in chyron are based on your play. Gameplay ain't bad, and the entrance music/jukebox also is promising, in terms of future roster or creative folks using create-a-wrestler. There's a lot of stuff that feels like they rushed to get the game out the door, like the way FTR is in the game with the season pass but not registered as a pre-built tag team, or the way we got Sammy and Jericho repping the Inner Circle, as the only members of Inner Circle. The game supports characters being in multiple teams, since it lists Lucha bros and Death Triangle, so why not put Sammy and Jericho as Le Sex Gods? Played some online last night with friends and I think the most fun we had was 4 player Casino Battle Royale. You pick your 5 or 6 wrestlers (can't recall off the top of my head) and then they come out randomly as your current person is eliminated. We only had some latency problems briefly but overall was smooth and a good time

Compare that to the visual customization which barely exists, and is full of padding. Being able to choose entrance, ring, and street gear highlights that emptiness. The game just doesn't feel complete yet. A solid start though.

E: yeah, sticking with that early impression the game is a ridiculously fun in-ring experience. Just needs those rough edges sanded. I'd be particularly interested in hearing what happened development wise and the lessons learned, both from what worked and what didn't and how much real world stuff like AEW's shifting roster and ESRB or developing for multiple platforms with such different specs and performance, or how a smaller studio affected the release. A patch dropped recently (for PS5 anyway), about a gig in size but no notes in-game as to what it does. About all that's happened is that I got a pop-up saying that the FTR and Matt Hardy DLC was now usable. Maybe it's prep for a bigger one with new features incoming?

They've released season pass 2 DLC 1, the Acclaimed and Dynamite's set. DLC 2 is going to be a tower mode DLC 3 is Toni Storm Right now the only champs with sanctioned belts in game are MJF and Orange Cassidy. Tony should either pull the plug or quietly invest in a No Man's Sky comeback, because it's just embarrassing seeing them hype the game on TV. "You can actually play as one of the two people in this match with their gimmick, ring entrance and gear from 4 years ago! Coming as DLC in 2024, the current and 3 time champ who signed with the company in 2022!"
