I turned around and booted up SR2 once I finished the new game, and for better or worse it is mean as hell. Not just the juvenile humor, but the Saints doing pretty horrible stuff. They shoot a judge in the first mission in Stillwater and then slaughter a bunch of homeless people in the second. There is not much effort put into making our protagonists sympathetic. I don't think the saints are ever supposed to be sympathetic

Saint's row 2 is still a wonderful game. I never played the first one, sadly.
