One thing that's not immediately clear is that there's actually a lot of timing related things going on already. On my first run, I got in trouble for being late even without ever interacting with the computer outside the office. Real time apparently matters in this case, so if you distracted by, say, reading the codex, you're probably going to be late. Also, the "tricky puzzle" is actually all in the codex, so you the player don't actually have to guess even if the player character doesn't have the right profession to know it properly. The attack itself is also based on how many interactions you've done in the conversation: In my own experience, if you just go straight to helping her, you have a bit more time before the attack happens, and with more time, you can try the tracing barriers. (Doing that picks up that they have some anti-tracking technology, iirc.)
