surely garmin/dedicated sport watches aren't counted in this category, right? aren't those high end hiking watches specifically made to track you in the middle of nowhere and, like, call a chopper if you're lost or hurt or whatever?

Garmin is mostly l1 gps+ galileo+glonass.

Possible eventual U.S. military contract to provide cheaper satellite iPhones to their overseas soldiers than what they currently now have?

Maybe, though the blowback from their employees would be substantial, as would the press attention to it.

Whatever provider they are using for the satellites, their current phones are likely more expensive. If they add to their catalog it will sell gangbusters.

Sorry, I don't follow. The provider Apple is using for sat connectivity, or the U.S. military? The current phones who has, Apple or the military?

I've read what you wrote about 14 times and I only got more confused each time (my fault, not yours), but you have me very curious here...

just as an example Thuraya satellite android phones doesn't even show prices on the product price since it's so outrageous, so if they support their network, they have a clear interest in bulk purchasing iphones and add to their catalog for casual users. All satellite providers supported by this will likely start selling them as low end endpoints.

It's cool what they're managing to do with the camera, but they hand wave away that a TON of what you see is software and enhancements you can't really control.
You can't get past the physics and the fact that their sensor is the size of a booger.

Pros can snap a handful of photos in raw if you want to skip the software enhancements but I think the scenarios where you will do better than the algorithms are very limited

The only way anyone could be dissapointed is if they don't add the usb-c.

I think it's pretty much written in stone since the eu directive for mandatory usb-c is 100% sure to proceed and apple won't accept to make two different chassis and spare stocks for lighting and usb-c equipped phones.
