I have a newfound respect for people that take the time to go through audio and cut it up to make people say stuff they never said. Especially for a president, as basically everything they ever said has been uploaded to youtube. The famous lines are easy to find obviously but something kinda off the radar? Ouch.

If anyone finds a clean copy of "I am paying for this microphone" you'd be a hero. Everything on youtube is clipped, the crowd noise sucks too. Which I guess is just something you gotta deal with when making samples but someone out there must have a better copy.

I chopped up one of his speeches. It was way more work than I should have spent on something like this, but to maybe justify it a little I figured I'd put the zip out there in case someone else finds it handy: http://xzzy.org/files/reagan-iceland-summit-address.zip It's from his October 13 1986 address, talking about what happened at the summit with Gorbechev in Iceland. There's nothing particularly notable about this speech other than it had clean audio (no reverb, no static, etc). He talks a lot about nukes and stuff. Cutting it up wasn't THAT bad, but it did take a couple hours to get through a 20 minute file. There's better ways to spend 2 hours. The files are named based on the words in them so if you have an app that makes searching by filenames easy, these should be pretty easy to work with. I might do the war against drug speech he did with Nancy, but I also might not. We'll see.

I've just been doing it with audacity, set up a hotkey to export selection to a wav and click through the file. There's no way for it to not be tedious, but it's pretty easy. Only issue is when I accidentally select the entire track and lose where I was in the file. This was linked on the M8 discord, it's a weird sample matching tool that parses a directory of samples and tries to find matches among them that "fit" a single sample you load into it. As I was staring at waveforms of his voice cutting out clips it was interesting to start to key into the way he spoke. I've never listened to a person talk in that detail before. One common example was when looking for a clear sample of him saying "the" or any other connecting type words. Super common word, gets used constantly. But he always rushed through pronouncing it and if there was another connecting word (say, "of the" or "have the") they were badly mushed/slurred together. Isolate that clip and it was indecipherable mush but expand the selection to include more context and it was super clear to me what he was saying, the "the" always sounded clear and legible. I assume all of us do the same thing we just don't hear it because our brains are used to hearing entire sentences and does appropriate filtering.

Reagan really was a great speech deliverer, the problems with him came from the difference in how he sold his policies and how they were implemented. He did damage to this country that we're still dealing with. Which to me is what makes sampling him fun.. taking his flowery, upbeat language and gluing words together in new ways that reveal what a jerk he was.

It's probably no coincidence that Trent Reznor's formative years were during the Reagan presidency. Only puffy paint and the NES got us out of that without becoming that angry.

I have such an enormous folder of reagan voice clips now that when I'm messing with audio I point it at that just because it's there and I'll "put in proper samples later." I was only supposed to make one song with reagan!

Don't apologize for making art. Just have fun and make it for your own ears. Then put it out there because it costs nothing to do and maybe someone else will enjoy it. Better use of time than doom scrolling twitter or whatever else it is people do for fun these days.

It was definitely fun but dang sourcing voice samples is a lot of work. I do like the idea of changing the characters around but I'm not sure I'd deep dive like I did on this one (and use maybe a dozen clips from all that work). I don't really want to do Reagan again either, but it would be nice to make further use of the chops folder I built. I really felt like the odd man out, everyone did these awesome experimental synth heavy bits and I slap out some goofy old school boots and pants thing. But I guess that's why pop music is pop music.
