Hughes on First?
Kirill Kaprizov
$50
Nikita Kucherov
$34
Victor Hedman
$76
Ryan Hartman
$2
Spent: $162
Remaining: $338

Just realized, a few minutes before the draft, that I was given Hedman. I didn't have him on my team last year. I had Kuemper.

I guess I'll just role with it?

I have never had good goaltending in these goon leagues (the first bad Carey Price season was the year I took him, and I also took Hellebuyck last year) but now I have Igor in both LSL and HHL so we're really gonna put this to the test

I really didn't go into this one with a plan and I ended up with a lot of guys on the same teams. Boston forwards and Colorado defense, basically, plus Florida's goaltending. I wasn't trying to be a homer either but all those Boston players felt too cheap to pass up. Rakell and Drysdale I didn't actually want that much, but got at the "nominate and hope someone else takes them" stage of the draft, but they're not the worst players to have. Overall I'm pretty pleased. I think I could have done better but my keepers really help to buoy me here. When everyone is healthy this could be a very good team. I was shocked more people didn't push for McAvoy. He's out until November but he's insanely productive for this format (37th overall in 2021-22) and a great keeper option at just $16.

Can't say I planned to get Matthews, but he's arguably the best player in this format. I've been dying for top-end forward talent for years, and with goaltending a non-issue having a focus was easy. We'll see how the $26 defense holds out, but I think there's enough scoring talent to mitigate it. Like this draft a whole lot more than last year's.

I feel pretty happy with this considering I don't think my keepers are that great. Not sure I'm super thrilled with Thompson at $56 given Binnington later went for the same price but hopefully Vegas doesn't suck.

Was very happy with my prices for Guentzel, Kopitar, and Carlson. Also pretty happy with the prices I paid for Morrissey and Andersson. J.T Miller I didn't get a bargain on but it was market value. I am a little nervous that he might not be able to repeat that year but as long as he only takes a minor step back production-wise and not a huge step back I think it's still good value.

My plan for this draft was to not get into insane bidding wars. I didn't want to pay like $200 for a Matthews or a Draisaitl. They rule and all, but I'm not sure I'd want them for much more than like $130 or so. I dunno, maybe I'm undervaluing them, but it's just soooo much of your cap to pay for those guys. Like you could get two-three good players for that price.

Hughes on First?
My only strategy was to get a strong goalie and center. I threw my money at Vasilevskiy, because there was nearly nothing else available, and then I grabbed Crosby because I had missed on my other choices (Barkov and MacKinnon, to name two). From there, since I knew money was tight, I decided to spend it on two good players, then worry about the rest. I tried to focus on more players who could bring ~intangibles~ and ~grit~. My goalie picks were "who can I get for nothing?" Then I noticed Tom Wilson still available, and I figured he'd be a great stash.

I thought about taking Wilson too but I already have McAvoy and Marchand stashed on LTIR, and Wilson isn't going to be back until late December at the earliest, from what I've been reading. He could be big though in that back half of the season. Good $1 bet

My plan largely revolves around getting a good goalie, I lucked into Husso down the stretch last year, but probably picked up and dropped a dozen guys otherwise (also stuff having a islander goalie and never knowing if they are starting). Other than that just tried to get guys mostly on good teams, +- should be good, faceoffs probably not and not sure the rest.

Also I threw the teams into the athletics fantasy model thing (which I used for the first 45 minutes till work got in the way), not sure it did me heaps of help.

I have hopes that since its not a money league, and I posted 3min after the error, that folks will appreciate that it was a misclick-esque accident.

No one is dropping their 8th round pick & starting goalie an hour after they are declared healthy and no longer IR+ status, ya know?

not going to lie, I didn't have a particular draft strategy. tried to focus on younger folks mostly, but really just made decisions based on what was available. think things turned out ok, but we'll see how it goes...

oh wait, one strategy, I tried to focus a bit on good wingers this year, over centers. not sure if that made sense though.

I just got offered Andrei Vasilevskiy for Jack Hughes in a keeper league, goaltending has always been my achilles heel (currently running Demko, Swayman, and Knight) but it feels bad to trade away a potential 1C like Hughes. I feel like I have to do it though right? I already have Barkov holding down my forward depth

A man's man, wears a lot of denim, tells long stories and has oatmeal saved from this morning.

Was there a change to how yahoo handles FA pickups? I'm used to running my team entirely through knee jerk gut reactions and having them reflected the next morning, now I just get a warning about not being able to drop a player that's already played.

Also, the 'Available Players (Games Today/Tomorrow)' seems really wonky, none of the dates are actually correct (today says the 20th) and they don't appear to show the right schedules at all.

If you're talking about LSL, the league changed to same day adds. Took me a bit to realize.

I think you can't drop a guy whose game has already started so that you aren't cycling players within the same day (start a guy in a 7pm game and then drop him for a 10pm start). But you can drop those guys tomorrow morning and have your pickup available immediately.

Yeah we went to same day adds this year in all leagues. It's kind of weird how they handle it in Yahoo tbh, not sure if I'll bring it back next year or not.

I have never had good goaltending in these goon leagues (the first bad Carey Price season was the year I took him, and I also took Hellebuyck last year) but now I have Igor in both LSL and HHL so we're really gonna put this to the test

hmm.

Made my first big brain move of the season. Sat John Gibson (with no alternative going in) who has allowed like 5 goals a night for the past 4 games, against Boston, who has scored 5+ goals almost every game. So naturally Gibson has only allowed 1 on 33 with minutes to go in the 3rd
