Idc about the tether at all, doesn't bother me when I'm playing any PSVR2 game that Capcom put out. The thing just needs games. The hardware is finally great but compared to PSVR1 there's less to get excited about playing.

The announcement of it supporting PCVR comes across as a desperate attempt to move units.

Yeah doesn't seem like that was ever the plan, Sony was clear about no compatibility without a hint of it coming later. If the rumors are true then I take it as a clue that Sony has no plans for AAA exclusives, they're giving up on supporting the platform themselves. Which would line up with their recent cost-cutting and layoffs. Idk how you go through all that without wondering why you're putting development money behind such a limited install base, especially when you started porting console exclusives to PC.

I think part of the issue (and this could be mitigated in part by a Pro console) is that the current console gen launched what was pretty much seconds before new upscaling and frame gen tech became major GPU features on PC level hardware.

I think Sony meant for the PSVR2 to be a good competitor to PCVR and got screwed by it. The casual VR enjoyer can get a Quest for way less money, and the performance gap is way more noticeable compared to a modern GPU once the thing’s actually on your face.

I remember the VR1 picking up some more steam after the PS4 Pro launch, they gave it a soft relaunch along with the new console, so maybe we’ll see something similar here.

from my anecdotal experience, the VR userbase is about 15% of the people who ever bought the thing because after the newness wears off everyone realizes they don't want a plastic computer strapped to their face. This won't be a sustainable computing category until it's the size of raybans.

And there were already attempts to make that a reality, and everyone who tried abandoned the idea.

For me, the PSVR2 is missing all the weird and cool new ideas that the first one had. Where is Tumble VR 2? Statik 2, Superhypercube 2, and Thumper 2?

Or games that were unique like those? No where, hell none of those (other than Thumper) even got ported.

Get more of those games at the $20 price point on the PSVR2 and people will start buying them and better for Sony, people will start dumping money into the platform. It doesn't mater if they only sell 3 million units if each owner spends $200 worth of games on it.

There’s some odd things not getting ported TBH. Puzzle Bobble 3D was made by Survios, mostly a VR-only developer, and it has a PS4, PSVR1, and PS5 version, nothing for PSVR2. It’s really weird and unfortunate.

I only really use VR for sim type stuff so I'm not the typical user - GT7 was amazing and I was hoping F123 and WRC would support it - but they don't. And there's no good simcade flight games either. Bought a Q3 as I had built a PC for other reasons anyway and am enjoying a baffling large choice of racing and flying games, and yeah, would probably sell my PS 5 but I doubt anybody wants it. We'll see what the PC support is, my take it's a streaming solution using the PS5 which I'll try but I'm spoiled for pancake lenses even though I miss HDR/OLED. Too little too late I think but hopefully there's an uptake that proves me wrong. The controllers and haptics are amazing and I miss them.

I was hoping for more rhythm and lightgun games than we got. It ended up being mostly Pistol Whip and Synth Riders for me. Bit of Beat Saber, but that style of electronica isn't for me. I mean, I really enjoyed Moss and Ghost Signal, too. Wasn't a bad purchase for me, overall.

I’m sort of angry at Valve for not championing their crown jewel, the game meant to, according to Valve, set standards and overall quality levels above all else, to help float the young, naive vr industry confidently into the future. Yet they don’t seem to be porting Alyx to other platforms. Is no one asking, or have they just become every other platform holder that refuses any deal that doesn’t benefit their ecosystem?

One day I'd really like to get the lowdown on what happened behind the scenes with Alyx. Did Sony not pursue it at all? Did Valve pull back? Or was it never on the table?

I simply cannot fathom why the game wasn't made more available or why it wasn't a gigantic priority right out of the gate for that game to be on PSVR2. Just one more example of electronics in the last decade moving further away from general use and closer to high end luxury status symbols.

I think the main problem is them not being able to move enough PS5 units early on. A lot of people just managed to get a PS5 and along comes another 500$ device.
Had they shipped more units in the first year, the number of potential buyers for the VR2 may have been much higher due to wider adoption of the PS5.

Honestly I think it's just that VR is kinda niche. The thing that pisses me off is that part of why I put any faith into PSVR2 is that I stupidly assumed Sony knew this and was willing to support it regardless, even if was a slow growing product. But it really seems like they thought they were going to be the ones to finally get VR to pop off, and when it didn't happen they just lost interest. Very stupid of me to assume this after the Vita but I'm still disappointed.

That said. I don't really regret buying one. There's times I just want to chill and play VR and it's impressive hardware. I already have a pretty diverse selection of games for it and some of them are real bangers. RE, GT7, Tetris...All stuff with really high replay value and even Horizon I'm itching to play again. I loved call of the mountain. Also at least a decent chunk of PCVR/Quest games should keep getting ports, because VR devs need any sales they can get.

It'll probably be my last VR headset though, at least until some sea change happens in the industry. If VR can't get the software support it needs it's never gonna live up to it's potential and at a certain point I'm just gonna play old games on old hardware when I get a VR itch, cause it' not worth buying cutting edge tech if there is nothing to play or do on it.

I just think that companies are too scared to make full length video games on the psvr2. Now that Legendary Tales paved the way and showed that, yes, full length games are viable and we will pay money for it if it's good; we get other devs trying to push the envelope further.

Man, I really love LT.

There's this new VR port studio starting up there, and it looks like he's trying to wrangle deals to make official ports of various PCVR mods they've already done for games such as Shipbreakers, Neon White, and Outer Wilds. Good luck!

If Sony can't get more exclusive and good games to the system, they should at least open it up to more non gaming experiences.

On my Quest I can watch porn, do VR tourism, socialize, look at virtual art museums, use a ton of different fitness apps, watch movies, stream flatscreen games, etc. Even if all games disappeared, i'd still own and use it daily.

I think I may be done with VR gaming for the time being. A handful of standout titles aside (Alyx, GT7, and Call of the Mountain) I can't find anything to get into, especially when there's so many flatscreen games vying for my time.

I was hopeful that PSVR, Quest and PSVR2 would create enough of an audience to create a self sustaining eco-system. But playing through VtM Justice I just found myself wishing it was a normal game. The gameplay doesn't gain anything from being in VR, and the VR induced jank (such as accidentally erasing an entire mission's progress because the laser pointer selection mechanism misfired) actively makes it worse. The majority of games I try suffer from the same issues. I was willing to overlook the issues back in the PSVR days - I even played through all of Skyrim (again) in 3D blur-o-vision. I feel the technology and the games should have moved beyond this by now. But aforementioned standouts aside, they haven't.

Perhaps the next generation of hardware will solve a bunch of the issues. A genuinely powerful, wireless, light headset with a full field of view would be enough to tempt me back for another cycle. Or even just a reliable stream of top tier games. But until then I think I'll be packing away the PSVR2 and Quest, and will anticipate inhaling those nanites while playing old fashioned flat screen games.

A ton of PSVR2 games have good sales right now. Hellsweeper is among them, which also just got patch that apparently fixed the issues on the platform. Gamertag, along with most other reviews, thought it was a horrible port when it came out, but he says it now has parity with PC and fixed all of his issues.

Vertigo 2 is also having a good sale, but while people say the major bugs have been fixed the framerate issues persist... hopefully that gets sorted someday.

Personal trip report for Hellsweeper, it looks very crisp and plays very smoothly. The combat has a lot of mechanical depth and is fairly challenging. The lower difficulty levels are probably fine with snap turning and teleporting, but the higher difficulty levels definitely seem to expect you to use the more acrobatic wall running and flip abilities. So, you'll need good VR legs to get the most from it. If you aren't prone to nausea, I definitely can recommend it though. It has all the depth and variety that I normally find lacking in VR roguelikes.
