I was trying out Archer and getting it to 30 and what the gently caress is it with some Mobs who run away and reset to full hp if you kite them too far?! What's the point of an ARCHER class who CAN'T actually stay at distance?! :catstare:

I get being able to run away, but all I'm doing is hitting them, backing up a little, stopping, and hitting them again, repeat; in theory they should be at a fairly constant distance and me not getting too far from them, but the weird thing is some monsters you can stay further away from than others, and some have very short leashes(?) before they reset. For some it seems more to do with how far they get from their original spawn point?

Kwyndig posted:

Yeah this isn't an old MMO like EverQuest or Ultima Online, kiting mobs is not an effective strategy. Use your abilities and weaponskills and the mobs will fall well before you do.

The ranged part of ranged DPS is when you're in party content like a dungeon and there's a tank to hold mobs still for you.

:corsair:

How well does a chocobo do for being a psuedo-tank like that but for the open world? I heard you can get a chocobo to join in fights at some point?

Generally speaking, there’s not much point to fighting overworld mobs in the first place except for four conditions (and one of them is endgame): you’re doing a hunting log for early exp/Grand Company promotion, a quest wants you to, it’s a FATE, or you’re in a hunt train and tagging marks. The average mob is worth such measly exp for time and has such a short tether that you’re best off just running through.

Best yet, running through on a mount which insures you’re running faster than the monster. They can’t knock you off of mounts.

Generally it's Hunting Logs where this is more of a thing for me, because sometimes when completing the log, especially in the 10-20 or 20-30 range it'll bring me to a part of a zone I'm not at the average level for, but I caaaan if I'm careful take on those mobs one at a time, at level 15 I can take on something that's level 20-22 but definitely not two of such things. So I try to kite to keep away from other mobs that might aggro onto me, and going into a circle is a little more likely to wind me into another mob or group of mobs.

Yeah most of the time I don't need to move, but I'm an Archer :(

What's your control scheme? If you have autofacing and legacy movement turned on you can constantly move and just hammer on the 1 key until something is dead, no need to back up and stop or whatever. Just be sure you're actually moving in a circle instead of backing away in one direction.

esc - > character config -> control setting -> general/targeting

I'll check that next time I log in, but that brings up a good question, when I hit tab to try to autotarget mobs, it often for me targets a non-hostile mob and one that's usually very far away to boot. Is there some more convenient way of auto-targeting mobs that are close and hostile? A big problem I face is often sometimes enemies die very quickly, especially in dungeons so its hard to maintain a consistent rotation because enemies keep dying which throws me off trying to target a new one. Maybe 50% of the time tab works fine but sometimes especially in the overworld it targets something of zero interest to me.

Thanks! I'll be sure to try that out.

Part 3: Saya gets dumped and so heads to the Waking Sands to continue the MSQ
Part 4: Finishing Lancer, starting BLM/Thaumautaruge.

As I was doing my daily dungeon run for the Level Roulette(?) I figured out a LIFE HACK for commendations! WoW Refugees Hate it! Role-play!

I decide that in my continuing compulsion to avoid doing the MSQ because I just kinda want to keep doing side-quests forever :unsmith: I join up with the Pugilists for Punchy-Punch times!

Welcome to Cornelia!

And he's an old martial artist as well channelling special spiritual energy!? Are there any vampires around too!?

He's almost as old as Captain America, seriously look at that grizzled handsome face!

Don't worry uncle, I get tired after talking too long as well IRL :shobon:

Outside the guild is their lalafel lookout, I'm increasingly convinced that there's a lalafel illuminati.

While picking up coins I stop to pick up more coins, dropped by this lady. I suspect ulterior motives.

I get some new digs and travel outside Ul'dah, doing the questline and also hunting log quests. I see this... Contraption? Apparently Ul'dans were told to pound sand so much they took it to heart and made an actual machine to pound sound for them.

(Does this actually work? Can you "harden" the ground by pounding it?)

While out and about I encounter an extremely Saturday Morning Cartoon questline involving a little market square on hard times undergoing the worst of crisis: Gentrification!

There's even a yakuza character.

I like how if you actually do all of the side-quests in this area, this next moment actually hits a pretty neat high note as the rest of the locals gather together pledging to help out and pitch in :3:

I forget the exact circumstances, I think there's some sort of drug trade we're investigating like good vigilantes? Do the various guilds actually have jurisdiction over criminal matters? I notice the Brass Blades definitely seem to turn a blind eye to us punching people. :hmmyes:

Ahah! I knew it! The lalafel were up to something! :argh:

Gramps gets his rear end kicked by what seems to be a *checks notes* a Squrroo?

I was actually expecting that maybe it turned out that Hamon was a fraud the entire time with his stories made up or something but no, it's just age. I take my leave while Hamon collects his thoughts.

What transpires is a pretty wholesome story, again very Saturday Morning Cartoon in feeling, very nostalgic as I help whip Hamon back into shape by beating him up:

I strike a Jojo pose.

The cookies are ready.

I can't either but what you gunna do? *Not* Beat up the Elderly?

Draco comes back, smarmy as ever.

New digs  (Or rather, high enough level to swap)

I go on some side quests to help out of the pure goodness of my heart, a local Miqote who wants to become a better dancer :3:

And meet a lady the game describes as "luscious" and I concur. Ul'dah fashion is pretty... pretty.

This rando elezen makes me dance for his sick twisted amusement :argh:

OH! He's the guy you were looking for!

NO! *uses water spray bottle* no pouncing on the Elezen!

*THIS* is the dance you wanted to learn? High society/the rich never cease to disappoint.

She gives the dance a go.

She's like, "I'd like to see YOU do better."

"Fine. I will."

I impress her so much I apparently steal her away :haw:

Kinda makes sense, I'm dodging arrows and sword swings, that must take some kind of grace. I wonder if this story line eventually comes up again and turns into the Dancer job later?

"Yo. Not cool bro."

We run into Draco again and just when it seems like another problem is about to arise whose only solution is violence, it turns out,

BUT WAIT! PLOTTWIST! He's just misunderstood! :unsmith: He's just down on his luck and is just trying to help!

Thanks Chuchuto! I'm the cure ;)

Are all Ala-migan's this swole? :prepop:

I go to South? Thanalan to help Hamon train, beating up sandworms, and uh, are they filming Fury Road nearby?

"Alright Saya, I know what you're thinking. You've been beating me up pretty good, but I assure you, while you've been fighting me at 20-No! 30% power, I've only been fighting at 1%!"

"Hiyah!"

"Ok"

"Another member of the elderly falls to my fists."

Alright, the combatants are set, we have run the data through all possibilities:

IT IS TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLE!!!

Get set. Get READY!

FIGHT!!!!

KO!

HE USES HIS HALF-ORC FEATURE TO GET BACK UP AT 1 HP!!!

And Draco has a change of heart and the gang is back together! :shobon:

SHE PUNCHES THE TEXTURES THE TEXTURE RIGHT OUT OF HIM!

I have no idea what Hamon, Draco and Prischuto are doing, but yeah I can handle this dude by myself this is fine.

And as the coast is clear the people of Ul'dah take to the streets and take all of the credit for cleaning the streets of the criminals!

A lesson has been learned today, punching solves all your problems. :)

Back to Ul'dah to seek the wisdom of the ancients:

The Lalafel illuminati Council!

Where we last left off their now possessed brother has been spotted soliciting the company of adventurers :byodood:

The Lalafel Council summons me to their mom's basementsecret base.

Where they make me kill the bugs scaring their momgo through trials and tribulations to prove my worthiness!

I love these dorks.

(*VILLAGE PEOPLE INTENSIFIES*)

Having proved my worthiness, I am sent to intercept their brother, before he undergoes the worst fate for an all powerful wizard! Losing his virginity! :ohdear:

But I fear I may already be too late, I think I've seen this while watching the documentary Avatar

If evil, why hot?

Me and the Council go to battle to banish away this evil once and for all!

We are victorious! But not unscarred :( As it seems like Cocobuki was struck down in turn!

But wait! Cocobusi's efforts at alchemy were not in vain! And he withdraws from his voluminous container a potent redbullelixer to bring back Cocobuki from the brink of death! And succeeds in revitalizing their fallen brother and excising him from the clutches of the god of death!!

Back at the officeTemple, I stand before the Lalafel High Council of Magoi. And recognized as one of their own, the highest (heh) of honours. :agesilaus:

With the questline completed I slightly update my digs.

I'll split off the next part, my journey back to Gridania and my efforts within the Archery guild for my next update.

I got around today to continuing the MSQ content, unlocking my Chocobo (finally) and the PvP content; or in theory anyways, they appeared on my duty finder but are still locked? Says requirements not met and is very cryptic about it.

For today's recap of Saya's Eorzian Adventures we visit the Archery guild!

After talking to some of the local Miqote who give me side quests which Saya does out of the goodness of her heart, she meet the lovely Gridanian Retainer Vocate, and it turns out I cannot have a retainer on a free trial and I have so much junk in my inventory :(

She actually does some ~foreshadowing~ about how unwelcoming Gridanian Elezen are (allegedly) towards outsiders. I had thought that for Elves the Gridanian Elezen seemed rather unusually friendly for fantasy elves.

That's a, that's a nice outfit.

I end up killing a dude in self-defence (I swear!)

Who actually leads into a fairly deep and tragic story moment for this lady :stare:

Hello! Are you here to soothe my wounded heart :)

She seems to only have eyes for another :(

The lady in charge of the archery guild is not here for anyone's poo poo. She's silently judging, and you come up short.

But eventually she comes around and starts praising Saya who totally stoically accepts it as she will.

I'm sent on a dangerous mission to take care of some Ixali scouts, but some dude just Leeroy Jenkins his way into the fight.

And unless I'm mistaken this dude just never comes up again.

I finally meet a dude who I can only describe accurately as this motherfucker.

A dude so racist even our silent protagonist actually emotes in conversion with disapproval.

We go on the hunt for a poacher that apparently absolutely bamboozled a watchman that "totally wasn't me" Silvaire.

"Now whatever you do Saya, don't let her charms get to you."
"I'm not going to flirt with her."
*Sees Pawah Mujuuk*
"Oh no"

:sweatdrop:

She gets away, saying something very cliche like, "I will remember this!" :argh:

Silvaire's constant belittling and casual racism towards Leih finally gets to be too much for her.

The infighting gets bad enough that even our protagonist has to say something.

And by something I mean, ignore the arguing to say the first thing on her mind:

"Guys I can fix her."
Says woman who is worse.

Drama reaches a peak when Leih says she's going to run away from home D:

But on the other hand she seems to have something to say to me before she does so, what could it be...?

!!!

Maybe she wants me to run away with her!?

*zoomies intensifies*

But at the scene we are ambushed by the Lily Bandits, weird that they just steal flowers...?

Saya thoroughly enjoying being white knighted for a change of pace.

In the end, Leih offers herself up as tribute, as she feels that she'll never truly belong in Gridania or the Archery ClubGuild. :(

The choice presented should really look like this when we're asked whether to say we're willing to let her go or ask her to stay:

Pawah tells us off and leaves after a short scuffle but Saya can read between the lines. :hai:

But in all seriousness Leih is fed up by Silvaire's constant bullying and asks why I put up with it.

Saya: "I hear it builds character. :shobon:"

Which to be honest is a good question, probably that so far aside from what I saw happened to Foulques in
the Lancer's guild Saya has honestly not experienced a lot of Gridanian bigotry first hand aside from Silvaire.

I think similarly to the Lancer quest line this storyline would be a little more interesting if Gridanian's were
just more obviously assholes until after you do some quests to help out.

Leih puts my mettle to the test, to determine if sticking it out really did build character.

And Saya strikes her down without mercy. Gotta take your lumps kido.

Is she learning?

She's learning!

That the best way to deal with a hostile work environment is not to run away to join up with
the cute catgirl bandits who seem like they will appreciate you for who you are and just to deal with it and grow a thicker skin!

She has learned my lessons well. :patriot:

I go off back to Costa de Sol to do some side quest shenanigans to help out this rich lalafel I'm totally not jealous of.

Exhibit A of Proof That I am Not Mad Or Jealous.

Exhibit B.

She's helping me find more evidence that I Am Not Mad.

We think the evidence might be here.

So Not Mad I fire off what remains of my straightness to gently caress Cancer.

The battle lasts into the night.

Other people join into the fray hoping to defeat cancer.

After the battle we hung out a little, we weren't able to beat cancer this time but in a great lesson of companionship with me fellow adventurers
we won't give up!

Back at Gridania Silvaire is having an argument with Archery Boss Lady.

"Look, I wasn't being racist, I was just stating facts. See here's some statistics which will surely prove... :words:"

It actually does turn out that Silvaire is a tsundere with a specific tell when he's at his most tsundere. D'awww. Maybe he thinks we're some of the good ones!

Silvaire eventually fesses up the truth, he was bamboozled by Pawah's miqote charms! No subtext here whatsoever!

He runs off and me and Leih give chase because he may be a racist, a liar, a pig, an idiot, a racist, but he is NOT a porn star!

We have a heart to heart, and Leih says what's on her mind that sounds weirdly like a confession.

Saya's just like :munch:

But gasp! Another ambush!

Someone knows the theme of this arc.

That negging works! :downs:

But we manage to pull the rug out from under her although it seems like Silvaire still hasn't learned to let it go. :jerkbag:

And we got what we wanted all along, Silvaire's begrudging tolerance. :unsmith:

Tune in next time where I continue the MSQ on my Arcanist/Summoner!

I am ever so gradually building up a back log, I'll try to trim these down a bit since they're kinda long.

Saya makes her way back to Limsa to be sworn into the Maelstrom.

A tempting choice but Saya isn't that thirsty.

Wait, spoke too soon. :allears:

Finally the respect Saya deserves.

Saya gets her chocobo.

Saya then returns to the Waking Sands to check in, the Sylph's are apparently rustling in the bushes of Gridania.

He lost his brother :smith:

You're going to have to be more specific than that Thancred, do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?

This lady is being really sus hiding in this dudes shadow.

In East Shroud I go to the Sylph's and do the traditional dance.

But just as I'm making progress an anchor appears to slow me down, two of em in fact.

Saya then has to rebuild the broken bridge with the Sylphs by killing some Imperials who are trapezing about with their filthy footsteps.

While Yda and Papalymo are having a thunk, the next MSQ quest sends me all the way back to Limsa Lominsa for some reason!?

This turns out to not be that bad as it lets me start up the Summoner and Scholar Job questlines.

The world's toughest Lalafel or the Smartest Maurader?

"I ask you, are you my master?"

I meet Y'sthola's sister, who is adorbs.

And we go off to a LITERAL DESERT, the thirst is real.

I am now a summoner, and just in time for a lead to come up, I return to Buscaron's in the South Shroud where we discover signs that the Elder Sylph
were spotted nearby in some cave, where we come across an Ascian! Lahabrea! The fiend!

"Hello Darkness, my old ''friend''"

I did this duty with my friends who aggro'd the boss by accident, so I dunno how to tell you this Lahabrea, but...

Omae wa, shinderu

We saved the Sylph Elder! Who looks like a Disney/Kingdom Hearts character.

"Yare yare da-ze"

But my collection grows at least :3:

Really like the shot composition here.

Somewhere along the way we meet a troubled yoot, who is omg rude.

D'aw but he's sowwy :3:

I wrap up helping the Sylph's to follow a lead regarding the appearance of Ascians if I recall correctly.

Alphinaud lampshades that his sister has been unceremoniously put on a bus.

Saya sees him leave and like, I question her tastes.

Oh no! He also lost his brother! :smith:

What.

This absolute unit signs a letter of introduction for me to his girlfriend which I'm sure will work out well for everyone.

Bunch of Alamighans touching grass.

After that I do some side-raids with my other D&D friends.

I pet my friends raccoon.

We start doing Sunken Temple of Qarn, which I'm sure will go fine.

As long as you're having fun, I guess!

The ignoring of Gladiator/Paladin made me snicker, though. (To put it in a way that avoids spoilers: The Paladin job quests leave a bad taste in a lot of players' mouths, at a point in the story where switching to another tank job is both easy and fun.)

I am! To be clear I am not trying to avoid the MSQ or anything, I think subconsciously because I've seen a LP of ARR & HW already I'm drawn a bit more towards side-quests and the Job/Class quest lines because the LP'er didn't do them as they were a MSQ-Story focused Let's Play; except for Dragoon as it was HW relevant. So Side-Quests/Job/Class Quests are all 100% new content to me.

I also have a sort of assumption that by having multiple classes available as I start to get ahead of the level curve for the MSQ in one class I can always switch to another and effectively level it and be able to switch them up as I want.

Also my friend group is the kind that gets just ever so a little just a little bit toxic sometimes so there's a troll-y part of me that has a bit of a grin by poking that bear.

But mainly I'm enjoying my little Let's Play-esque write ups I'm posting here and I currently got about 160 images to go through (the past two updates I made sure to try to keep it shorter to avoid my posts being a pain to scroll through, so right now for about every 10-15 images I keep maybe 1-2) for what I've done of the Rogue's Guild plotline, the Maurauders, what I've done of the MSQ so far, and the Conjuror's plotline so far, and I didn't want to get unmanageably too far ahead while still aiming to post at most like twice a week while keeping the post-length reasonable.

I hadn't realized Gladiator/Paladin was possibly infamous, I just avoided it because even Conjuror was getting close to the line to what I'd consider to be Out of Character for Saya, Paladin albeit my point of reference is D&D even more so. I don't particularly see Saya as religious, Crystal Goddess notwithstanding.

You were trying and that's all that matters, good stuff :)

Yeah!

Come to think of it I think the tank actually was apologizing first, but this Canadian won't allow any of that! I will not be out-sorry'd! :canada:

Well that's annoying, I was queueing as DPS, which usually is like a 10 minute wait; I tabbed away for a bit and forgot I was queued, so when I tabbed back in, apparently the queue came up and was "cancelled", so it counts as getting the reward for today? That sucks.

When I queued the reward was still available, and didn't say reward already received.

Alright I must've Mandela'd my memory of it being available somehow, because now its past 11 and the reward bonus is back.

I am going to also try and make sure sounds stay on when tabbed, which sound specifically is the duty finder sound?

fake edit: Accidentily hit post on "stay".

Had a great Copperbell Mine run. This comment by our healer I think says it best: "This is the best most cursed copperbell mine run I've ever seen."

I only noticed a couple of things, mainly that the tank had pulled maybe a bit too hard and we wiped; I think what had happened was a combination of two things; (1) some of the mobs de-aggro, which I think made the tank go deeper, until the mobs stopped de-aggro'ing? (2) And I think maybe was just slightly out of range of our healer.

After that I started to cheekily cast Physick on the tank, because you know, gotta be safe and protect the tank! :sun:

At one point the tank stopped for a moment, and seemed to be pondering something and he realizes/informs us that the reason why it was going slow was because his equipment was broken! :ohdear:

Eventually he also notices I've also been healing him (as a Summoner) and he was like, "Wait that was you!? I was so confused for the longest time!" (When the healer also realizes this he joins in on healing the tank at non-combat times too)

Probably nothing all that cursed but we were having fun. I got two commendations! :)

That was disorienting to me (in a fun way) when I was one. Lalas have odd proportions that help compensate but FemRa have the typical body shape and it messes with perspective. Especially in Ishgard.

My first community event! They say this procession has no end, and no beginning, it ends where it begins and begins where it ends...

I was finishing the White Mage questline for ARR and saw this massive wave of players on shiny mounts passing me by and I asked in local chat, "What's going on!?" and then they were like "Join us!" and I'm like "Sure!"
