HW PLD feels like the person who was given the opportunity to write the quest had like three different ideas for a side quest storyline, couldn't decide between them, and then decided that if this was their one shot at writing a questline they were going to shove them all together and make it work somehow.

Unfortunately they were not nearly skilled enough to make it work as the story was thematically inconsistent with the Paladin/Knight class fantasy or prior questlines, the plot was victim to a bad case of telling you interesting stuff happened off screen rather than letting you actually experiencing it, and the finale tying everything together was so convoluted and nonsensical that the translators expressed their own disbelief at it through the dialogue from one of the new NPCs saddled with having to be included in the whole affair.

To top it all off the whole mystery is revealed to be about some bullshit nobody cared about, which the writing certainly didn't do any work prior to that point to establish why you should care about it, and some convoluted competition mechanics get written into the Job Stone of all things in a way that was never seen before and never seen since. One would might suspect the PLD quests must've poisoned the well for examining the mechanics of how job stones work too carefully, lest a hopeful new writer gently caress up as badly as the 50-60 PLD quest writer did.

When asked about the universally negative fan response to the questline, and specifically if there were a particular writer to blame, the devs replied that they couldn't remember who worked on what particular questline except for a few standouts and there was a real chance the writer had moved on to a different team at SE altogether.

Yeah one thing to remember about their former Job quest workflow is that they're assigned to different people each expansion, usually. They're totally covering for the PLD HW quest guy so fans won't burn him in effigy outside the SE offices though.

Not since 1.0, no. Things changed dramatically with the release of ARR to be more of a conventional mmo

Yeah, the only dungeons that really needed guides were the ARR Hard Dungeons and the devs were still deciding on what their dungeon design principles were even going to be.

From HW on, stuff has generally been pretty intuitive to figure out, even if it might take a second try to get a clear if absolutely everyone's new.

I used to have tankxiety but that disappeared pretty quickly when I actually got into dungeons

this game definitely sands off all the rough edges of the dungeon tanking experience to the point where it's widely known to be the easiest role of the three

It comes from trying to tank in mmos like WoW where if you make even a single mistake or don't follow the exact prescribed route you get the most hateful toxic things thrown at you. Speaking from experience, at least.

Also this. Miss a shortcut and terminally online people will throw feces at you like rabid chimps.

Oh dungeons here are pretty linear with few exceptions (mostly optional formerly-endgame dungeons in 5678 roulette) so there's not really much to stress about.

People in ffxiv are on average a little more chill with the caveat that it's still an mmo

Runa
Feb 13, 2011

I say a little more chill but if I'm in a dungeon and the tank only single pulls, even if the healer encourages them to pull doubles, I will absolutely talk about it in FC chat and will usually get a "lol rip" or other joking condolences in response

Complaining in private is always your prerogative as a player and this is true of other players too.

Rescue is the most powerful trolling tool at a healer's disposal but I've only ever had it used on me by friends doing stuff like "lets you and me die to ancient flare together"

top ten anime betrayals, it's great everytime

One time I got them back by making it look like I was going to die to a mechanic in stormblood waterspout on shinryu only to turn on surecast when they tried to save me.

Runa
Feb 13, 2011

A slow tank is just kind of a grin and bear it inconvenience for most players. A slow dps is the sort of problem that creeps up on you, like the tank and healer have a growing sense of dread that this pull that should only take two minutes is for some reason taking five, and this boss is living long enough that we're seeing it cycle through its mechanics a third time. A slow tank is just something everyone just sort of knows how to deal with. A slow dps is something that gets people trying to figure out what's going on, and they'll absolutely talk about it in FC chat or discord too.

Sometimes the answer is they don't use aoes on packs. Sometimes the answer is this trial doesn't have a minimum gear level and these poor suckers queued up for trial rou while powerleveling a class faster than they could get gear for it.

Tank: Mind if I offer some healing advice?
Me: Sure
Tank: make sure you are using Cure 1 to proc free cure or else you will waste too much mana
Me: Thank you

Dungeon 2 (no deaths, no wipes, unprompted)

Tank: mind if I offer some healing advice?
Me: Sure
Tank: Don't cast cure 1, just use Cure 2 and start DPSing in fights
Me: Thank you

It is entirely possible tank 1 was pranking you

lmao, I started with like 100k in gil when I found black jack also. the odds are much better in the game because its truly random (no multiple decks) things like 2.5x payout on black jacks, insta wins, and dealers than stand on 17 lmfao. Truly awesome.

I legit think that long time marketboard baron players with more gil than they know what to do with are a real boon to a scene like this. When a quarter billion gil barely even registers, you can just fund a high roller casino for fun and not need to worry about profitability .
