I guess I played an FFXIV trial like half a decade ago (never subbed) and wanted to see if the game had changed enough to be actually fun now. I tried to log in, and it says that the modern trial is only for never-triers, but that someone on it can play to level 60 with no time limit? Am I really out of luck to jump on the modern trial because I'd previously tried (and not liked) the game so long ago with their week trial or whatever?

I was able to install the XIV Launcher from flathub though and get in through that on a new account. Ibram Gaunt posted:What didn't you find fun about the game? Bruceski posted:Depending what your issues were some things are going to be VERY different. ARR-era FF14 was very grindy (compared to modern, less grindy than, say, FF11 or Everquest) and a lot of it's been streamlined in that respect over multiple expansions (I think Shadowbringers --> Endwalker is the first time they haven't changed something fundamental to the battle system). Story-wise though you may run into the same issues. The pacing in ARR's MSQ is very... let's say deliberate and that can chafe people trying to "get to the good stuff" or who are coming into it specifically for things they've heard about at current endgame and trying to catch up. Later expansions tend to at least have a constant direction the plot is pushing you in; early ARR meanders a lot because it's trying to establish the setting of the whole continent. Makes it easy to feel aimless. I don't mind it taking a while to level up. I honestly rarely play any MMO's more than a few hours past when I hit the level cap. I've never found raids or end-game treadmill running fun.

It looks like you can switch class/job anytime you want? If I'm reading this right? You just have to do a few quests for the guild or whatever to get familiar with its mechanics? That sounds appealing since I also never had a burning desire to replay through content to get another class as an alt.

Started out with a lancer since I built a whole team around that class in FFT back in the day. The game plays really well with a controller. I'm playing on my steamdeck casting to my TV and then using a PS5 controller. It did take me like a half hour to figure out the setting to switch to controller UI was in character settings and not system settings under controller.

Oh, wait, am I supposed to be switching classes as I outlevel the quests in an area to stay in the range appropriate for it?

Coming from GW2, the FATE stuff, at least in the starting areas, really feels underdevloped compared to the Dynamic Events there which can span the whole region and have multiple branching paths they take depending on whether the players in the area succeed at the various phases. Those were my favorite thing about that game.

So I got to level 15 in a class and started unlocking the other jobs. I actually kind of like the crafting jobs. It's a neat choice you have to either play the minigame to get a high quality version of the item (and bonus exp) or if you don't want to bother with that you can just slap the easy crafting mode that'll pump out however many you set it to all in one go (at average quality). I was kind of concerned how it was going to handle the gathering jobs since you'd not have access to any of your normal combat abilities while trying to do those and constantly flipping between jobs to first clear out an area before you gather a node seemed miserable. But I see there's a stealth skill that more or less makes you invisible to the mobs of appropriately leveled areas. I was also playing around with the outfits and I see I can't put a dress on my male Lalafell. Disappointed.

That recommendation to watch through the "Pat Stares At" video was a good one. Some of his suggestions like turning on "expanded hold" for the stuff you don't frequently use and adding non-crossbar regular hotbars to the screen to drop your long-cooldown abilities so you can keep track of when they are up (even though you can't select them on the hotbar with a controller) without having to constantly check were great suggestions. I see you can also add classes/jobs gear set shortcuts to the cross hotbar too. That saves me a lot of digging in the menus every time I want to switch up some crafting. I've only watched like 1/3 of that long rear end video but it's already been a good use of time. I'd thought that GW2 had a decent controller setup with its action cam and player made control maps in steam, but FFXIV has been leaps and bounds better just by virtue of not having to use mouse emulation for selecting in windows or managing items. I think I've only had to use mouse emulation to add skills to the regular hotbars for cooldown tracking. Literally everything else has been doable with regular controller movements.

Okay, so I was really struggling with non-party healing and just the general filter targeting grabbing too much poo poo I didn't care about. Then I discovered the LB + button filter customizations that let you set a discrete set of things to cycle through. The default "Friends" filter served the purpose there great. I really think that should be the default, since it's a huge pain in the rear end to try and select non-party members to heal in combat without it on tap. And it'll go back to the normal sheathed/unsheathed targeting modes after that combat is over (unless you turn those off obviously).

Some of the early game voice acting has been... interesting. I also had some tonal whiplash going from whimsical fantasy world airship to sci-fi dark legion evil empire in the same cutscene. I really like Limsa Lominsa. Kicks rear end as a map. It's super full of life and lots of little details about the npcs going about living their lives. The job quests here also feel pretty varied and tailored to them. Ul'dah feels super dead and lifeless. I don't like that place at all. I haven't spent much time here though yet. I still need to pick up the crafting/gathering/combat jobs here. New Gridania (my starting area) doesn't feel very capitol city like. It feels way too small, and the there's not much non-essential stuff around to give the place a more lived in feeling. I don't like the job questlines here. They all feel super samey and carbon cutouts of each other. Nitrousoxide fucked around with this message at 21:13 on Jan 30, 2024 |

Finally, unlocked glamours and got excited to turn all my baby gear into glams, so I can play dress-up with my little guy. Only to discover that can't buy them after I used up the few you get to start, you have to craft them. So spent the next couple of days leveling up Bot and Carp, so I can actually craft more. A little deceptive with the level 15 unlock, but can't craft more until like level 25-30 with a gathering/crafting profession. I do like the "emperor's new clothes" gear you can buy, so you can drop a blank appearance on a slot while still being geared. I kind of wish there was a deduping function for the armory chest. Found out I had like 10 versions of a Hempen Kurta.

I'd switched to Japanese VA, and Raubahn's actor did the best job by far so I'm gonna go with him. Plus its really close to the teleport crystal, and my class, the Gladiator is in the city too. Kan-E-Senna kinda sucks in both English and Japanese. I don't really like that city, and the questlines there are carbon copies of each other. Merlwyb was alright. Didn't really stand out. I usually port to Limsa Lominsa as my home base though since it's connected to The Rising Stones, though since I got pager from them, I get the feeling I might not need to go there much anymore. I also just like the vibe of Limsa Lominsa more.

Wow, these supply missions provide a TON of experience for a crafting class even medium levels. And they barely cost any gil for the resources while getting you a lot of grand company space bucks to boot. That daily roulette: leveling thing also gets me a whole rear end level for like 10 minutes of play. I think it gave my Level 33 character like 80k bonus exp for completing it.

The chocobo companion thing is kind of a neat way to make solo leveling non-DPS classes easier. At least that's what I think the purpose is. You will have a healer who's squishy with middling to low DPS, or a tank who's tough which would struggle to put out significant DPS, and you can have the chocobo pick up a complimentary role in a duo party. I guess it could also serve as a tank for a DPS class in the tanking stance, though I don't know how well it'd hold aggro or not get melted by enemies and haven't had a chance (or desire) to try since I'm already a tank.

Is there some way to update all my classes' gear setup in one go before I dump unneeded dungeon gear into an expert delivery mission? It's kind of a pain to go through 20 different classes to make sure they are all as good as can be before I start dropping that stuff off

So I finally sat down and started messing around with fishing, got up to level ~25, but these "powerful hookset" and "precision hookset" have very vague descriptions. How can I tell when a fish has a strong/weak bite? I don't see anything in its description, plus I'm sure as heck not going to memorize all the bite strengths of the hundreds (?) of fish or aquatic life for this game if it is.

|
# ¿ Feb 14, 2024 21:13 |
Ah, okay, that makes more sense. I saw that patience increased the chance of netting a bigger fish, and bigger fish seemed to be more exp, so wanted to maximize that gain. As a free-to-play player inventory space is pretty limited, so I don't really want to lug around a million different baits, so I kind of like carting around the like 5 artificial flys instead. Plus they rarely get lost in the casts.

Got to 50 (though my main story quests are still upper level 20's) and unlocked Samurai and Red Mage. Samurai is fun with the positional stuff and the abilities (at least at level 50) really fit nice conceptually on the cross bar since I can position the abilities to correspond to their positional requirements or which ability they combo off of with the LT+RT hold toggle layout switch. Though there doesn't seem to be a good 3-step front facing combo for solo work. I guess you can still use the 3rd combo step, but you don't get the positional boost to potency. Red mage seems really complicated with a lot of temporary buffs to reduce cast time, white/black bars you have to keep track of, ability combos, and cast time interrupts you have to avoid since it's a spellcasting class. Not a huge fan of it in the short time I played with it. Samurai seemed to "click" much better for me.

Sunday Morning posted:Using two hotbars just for tracking cooldowns and procs made red mage so much easier for me. Just a quick glance to the left of my character gives me so much information. I don't really need the Jolt icon but I had it there when I took the pic to remind myself i was in content that allowed the finisher combo. Doing this helped a bit I guess. I wailed on a target dummy on someone's house in the Mist for about 10 minutes to figure out the job and sort of got the hang of it. But I still don't really like the whole proc mechanic with it. I end up having to just stare at the hotbar/status bar to see when the proc shows up and being reactive to that instead of planning out my combos or watching the cool poo poo on the screen. I like how when you pop that first part of a samurai combo you can be sure the next ability is ready to go.
