From what I know of the match, mostly from Muhammed Ali's side of the story: Ali has always loved pro wrestling, and is down to work something fun. Inoki comes to him 2 days before the fight with a very suspicious rule set to sign off on, and Ali gets a hunch that Inoki is going to try to shoot on him Ali counters with a rule set that shuts down pretty much everything, keeping him safe, and leading to the "fight" where Inoki just fidgeted across the canvas all night
