"Mathman's not here." "Oh? Where is he?" "He's in the Mathroom."

I kind of wonder if it's gotten easier to penetrate the billboard top 100 due to overall music sales being a fraction of what they used to. Music industry revenues peaked in the year 2000 and went in freefall ever since. Even though musicians kept making music in even greater numbers due to technology making it more accessible. So what do we need studios, producers, and labels for?

I would say so, although breaking through the top of the charts is extremely difficult now compared to back in the 80s. There's not a lot of songs churning in and out of the top 10. The charts back then had a lot of that going on.

I'm honestly surprised these songs weren't as big as I thought they were. These two come to mind pretty quickly when I think of hit tunes from the 80s.

I was in a war with someone on his BBS. We were friends once and I introduced him to someone I knew. The result from the chaos is I remember he liked Mr. Mister.

On the topic of 80's music, I think Grace Jones never gets mentioned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0XLzIswI2s (NWS, some titties, bums and sausage)

I liked the song as a kid but didn't hear it again until a couple of years ago. The video is neat because it's so steeped in the zeitgeist of 80's photography aesthetics. My dad was into photography at the time this video came out and I used to read the photography magazines and books that he bought. This video is basically everything that was in those books.

I don't really like 80s pop and it's mildly irritating how I hear it everywhere, but less so than when grocery stores play Christmas music and I have to shop wearing headphones to avoid waking up in a pool of my own urine and someone else's blood

Came out in 90, recorded at least partially in '89. Imo the perfect capstone for the decade.

The Grace Jones song Demolition Man was not in the film Demolition Man.

A good point, is there less activity on the top 10 now? It makes sense, even thought it's much easier for any artist to make and self-publish music, they have less opportunities to gain mass-market exposure outside of a relatively smaller demographic of people that are seeking out new acts in their favorite genre instead of listening to playlists of stuff they're familiar with. I guess. If people aren't watching television or listening to the radio, then what other avenues do they get "fed" or introduced to new music?

For me 80s new wave was my gateway to industrial and eventually breaks and drum & bass. I'm sure nostalgia plays some part for me but I've always been a sucker for big synth chords, so 80s music always made me happy.

Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
80s into mid-90s music was, if nothing else, extremely well produced. As the 90s wore on, the overuse of bass, loudness, and throwing in more and more levels of effects just felt like we've created a modern sound slurry without any real identifiable sense of self to it.

Counterpoint: Ministry's "Land of Rape and Honey" came out in 1988, and "Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" came out in 1989. If you can't appreciate industrial then I just don't know what to say.

Both of those are well produced, there is no overuse of bass (and while not quite as awesome as Twitch) are def good albums, which is in agreeance with what the poster was saying?

Fair enough. Ministry went to hell pretty rapidly after those two albums, sadly enough.

Every time I hear the word Industrial re: music I can't help but imagine a bunch of German people going to work at steel mills or whatever they have in Germany and wearing big walkman headphones to listen to industrial music on the train

This isn't a criticism of Industrial just an observation

I dunno why Al Jourgensen was so embarrassed by the New Wave era of Ministry, sounded good to me.

'80s pop, not really my thing. There is a radio station (or maybe it's just a mix CD at the store next door) that blasts "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" all the drat time, and it makes me envy the deaf.

"Deeper shade of soul" by Urban Dance Squad was apparently 1989.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4Dw6q-5iaA

It feels a bit more ahead of curve than that, though, to the point I'd probably thought it more a 1991 or 92 song given how much music was shifting around those few years.
