an obscure fifteenth-century Italian account of the kingdom of Prester John describes the monarch not as a Christian king but as a queen held captive by a dragon in a palace that constantly moves about the countryside. the citizens of this kingdom were described as being short and squat, with large heads, and apparently a knack for engineering that led them to create a complex system of underground tunnels.

in certain corners of Eastern Europe there are local legends about the curse of Saint Nicholas. both children and adults are advised to stay indoors during the Christmas season lest they startle him and cause him to fall off the roof or out of a tree. for if Saint Nicholas must return to Heaven early, the soul responsible must carry on his duties on earth until he returns.

in an early draft of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the characters were almost unrecognizable. for instance, Jonathan Harker is bitten by a strange spider within hours of arriving at Dracula’s castle, and soon finds he can climb walls and sense the imminent approach of danger. Van Helsing first appears in a strange suit of armor he proudly declares he forged himself. the American, Quincey Morris, is a classics enthusiast who has had a special shield made for him he can throw like a Greek athlete throwing a discus. apparently he had planned to give Dr. Seward some kind of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde potion, but dismissed the idea as being too close to Stevenson.

also Dracula was purple
