My great-great-aunt was a medium. According to everything I know (via my ma, who loves the family history poo poo) she was a 100% true believer who thought she could speak with the recently departed. So were some other relatives before then, back through the golden age of spiritulism. There's also a strong history of mental illness in the family resulting in a lot of suicides, permanent stays in the asylum, and schizophrenia diagnoses. These things may or may not be related, draw your own conclusions.
