i landed a patch in the kernel to fix a display issue with a handheld computer i carried for about a year and a half.

kernel with my patch got released about two weeks after the battery in my device went so puffy it tore the device case in half and rendered it unusable

i set out to deploy my own mastodon instance once. official docs had some clown shoes process of curl|bash and installing a bunch of poo poo from ruby gems to /home/mastodon so i noped the gently caress out and joined someone else's instance

mastodon is the federated twitter where a bunch of people run instances and it connects through some bullshit, but people can get mad at each other and sever their server connections. the admin of each instance can read all in/out pms to all the users.

also nobody is ever going to use it

i went back to kick the tires of it for fun, and in order to fave a toot(!) on another instance, i have to copy-paste its url into the search bar of my own instance, press enter and hit "favorite"

people are better off learning how to use git than this stuff

i guess it's ok just as a place to park your twitter presence to everyone can keep each other up to date on where they're actually going though. like linktree with six layers of abstraction and a foss license

yeah, the remote user interaction experience is p. rough, still. it seems like a priority for fixes (last major release even had some), but it's clunky. if you're following at the typical pre-twitter-sale pace, it's not a huge deal, but if you're trying to rebuild your twitter experience, it's going to be frustrating.

i don't think it's that bad, but i also feel the same way about git, now.

mastodon being pushed as a twitter replacement is gonna just make a lot of people feel confused or disappointed. right now, it's still best used by people who have some ideological commitment to decentralization, small web, etc. and the patience for warts that entails.

(speaking of lots of disappointed people, my instance is slow as poo poo due to tons of new activity.)

mastodon exists for the same reason that all other foss for decentralized platforms exists: so internet weirdos can have their own fiefdoms in which they are the local god-emperor but their e-serfs can still talk to e-serfs in other dork-nobles' fiefdoms

cohost looks pretty cool though, didn't really use tumblr when it was useful and cohost looks like tumblr with markdown and threading so I'm probably gonna write some bizarre effortposts about weird computer poo poo on it

so the response to internet weirdos running interoperable feifdoms is to instead advocate for one group of internet weirdos' non-interoperable feifdom?

don't worry, if one server dislikes another due to not monitoring their users 24/7 with sub-10 minute moderation reaction time, they can sever federation and then none of those users can communicate with each other anymore!

i dont think the idea that the admins can read your DMs is weird unless its some kind of secret, which it never was.. Same thing is probably true here. If you wanna have a private convo, theres lots of places you can do that.

Cybernetic Vermin
Apr 18, 2005

"the admins" will potentially be a different group of people, self-selecting, for every person you dm though.

mostly mastodon is extremely obviously a technology solution for a social problem. and a very leaky abstraction making sure the issues of the technology will be very visible to users. you better care who runs what and how they peer, or what's the point?

Yeah. Dont have private convos on mastodon. I dont think its really an issue, given that its a widely-understood limitation/feature/bug/whatever
